When I was growing up, a lot of freshmen didn't "qualify" academically...now suddenly it's all the rage to "reclassify" and skip a grade...what changed? Did they relax the standards to qualify, or are all these incoming kids just smarter?

I think people have become better at working the system in order to graduate early from HS. You dont need 4 years of all your core classes so if your school will let you, you can double up on english etc. in order to get out early.

I graduated early in the 70's to go to work. I had to have 4 full years of English so my senior year I had to take English IV and Business English the first semester to get out at Christmas.

It's a gimmick ! Some of these "athletes" are not smart enough to graduate in 6 years let alone 3 . If you listen to them talk you can tell that they're dumber that a box of cracker jacks !

I had all my credits to graduate after my sophomore year. I only had to go to classes a half day for two years. I had a full time job during that time. I graduated with a good diploma too.

No one graduated early when I was in school. I believe I had just about enough credits after my junior year, but still had a required class or two I had to have before graduation. The only thing you could really do is leave a few hours early your senior year to co-op.

Nah, it is just how it worked out. I took about ALL the hard classes my first two years. the last two I even had a hard time going to school a half day. My absent rate was ridiculous. I always had it down to one more absence and you had to repeat the class. (I never did have to repeat though.) My shop teacher got me a job welding on railroad cars for $11.42 an hour. That was big dough back then. Of course I blew it as fast as I made it but it was fun..

Look at the ages of the kids reclassifying. A lot of them were held back a grade when young and are now jumping back to where they should have been. Hagans was 19 when this year started. That's not the age of a HS senior. Bagley turned 19 during his freshman year at Duke - that's the correct age for a college freshman.

My father always used to say "you can read your way through College" and fundamentally, he was right. Learning how to learn and teach oneself is integral to being self sufficient, I say.

That said, I sure do and say a lot of stupid things (STILL DO!) even though I should know better.... lol

My sister graduated a year early in 76.

I was an aid 4 semesters for zero credit like a moron and still just need one credit because I didn't like math and ducked it religiously and had the total number needed after junior year.

If I had knuckled down and took a summer session I could have been done in two with little difficulty. One year early would have been no issue at all but I was just too goofy to go for it and I still consider one of my biggest errors.

If you take your science and math on schedule and take English credit bearing classes for electives then it is easy as pie.

My son is a senior this year. He had enough credits to graduate last year except the required 4 years of English. He takes college courses 2 days a week in the mornings. He doesn't have to be in high school until 11am everyday and only has English and JROTC classes.
