Is it really a raise to go to LA when there are no state taxes in TN? There is a buzz this weekend in MN with the coaches meetings. Fuller has a huge decision to make and you gotta think Barnes is looking for a Top 3 SEC salary.

I lived about a mile from UCLA and liked it very much. And my daughter was born at UCLA Medical Center. Westwood is a great place if you have a good job. Barnes should take the job.

UCLA is putting together another package eh? I wonder if they are also going to pay him less than he's making at UT as well.

My guess is that he gets a raise at Tennessee and UCLA is still looking. That's not a blue blood job anymore and hasn't been for a long time. You would think someone would jump on it if they are willing to pay the way that has been reported, but my guess is they offered the moon and stars to their top targets and have gotten cheap with offers to others....like TCU/Dixon....but if you can't get a guy from TCU to UCLA...that speaks for itself.

A UT fan told me that he was offered the same as Cal... 6 years 48 million and that Barnes has a 5 million dollar buyout.

I do not know how much, if any, of this is true.

barnes is of the age where he grew up and UCLA was the 'thing'. especially as a coach, i'm sure it and other blue blood programs would have been a dream opportunity.

at this point in his career, he will never be offered a chance to coach at a blue blood program. if offered, not hard to see why he would do it.

i heard he doesnt have an agent and never has. the guy isnt about the money.

I think he’s silly if he doesn’t take it , I mean UT for heavens sake ,it’s not like it’s a real basketball school. Just a two year run here and there then irs over and there back to the middle to the bottom of the pack

Rick Barnes is not going anywhere. This UCLA situation is a leverage for him to increase the salaries of his assistants, and of course, increase his pay as well. In addition, he is from Hickory, NC which is about 190 miles from Knoxville. Most of his family lives close to the Knoxville area with the exception of a daughter who lives in Texas. Lastly, UCLA is not the job it once was.

When you make that kind of money, you don't worry too much about state taxes.

I hate UT, but I sure as hell would rather live in Knoxville and work there than L.A. People are different. Alot people would agree with me, and a lot would say Im nuts. Depends on what kind of person you are, and in this case, what kind of person Barnes is.

He pays 6% in TN, its 13.5% in CA. Thats a significant amount of money. Only an idiot doesnt worry about more than doubling their tax payments unnecessarily; even MORESO when you are making big money, not less so.

I guarantee that won't come into play whether he takes the job or not.

In the end, I think he gets a raise at UT, and stays. Kind of like the Kelvin Sampson thing. Based on what Barnes has done at UT, he is good for another 5 years there regardless... then he can probably retire. UCLA, he might not even get 2 or 3 years.

He is good for life. On Knoxville talk radio the guy was saying that the Knox County mayor and WWE wrestler, Glenn Jacobs, needed to have a Rick Barnes appreciation day to commemorate their great season.

That's how happy Vol fans are with their year...

If he is rumored to be getting a Cal sized offer, perhaps Barnes knows what is returning to Knoxville next year.

UT will never be UK, Duke, Kansas, & UNC

You work you career to coach at a blueblood. Although UCLA has fallen....not too long ago they made it to 3 straight Final Four's. They continue to recruit at an elite level.

Barnes has coached at Texas and Tennessee....no matter what he does....people still care more about football.

Now he's older and a southern guy...I don't think he leaves...but it is a real threat he does leave.

Apparently Chris Low is reporting that they are in serious talks... so this has some legs at least.

I live in pigeon forge tn, and believe this ut fans don't give a crap about mens basketball. during the whole season and even into the tournament. all the sports stations could talk about was the football program and spring practices, the womens basketball team. yep the mens program is 3rd choice. and to be honest ut wont have much for the next 3 years atleast. he needs to go ucla where atleast they care about the basket ball program. strike when the iron is hot, because in a couple of ho hum years they will have him out on the street looking for anything he can grab

No offense pappy, but I have never heard of UCLA having much support either. There are a gazillion things for people to do in LA, and going to UCLA games isn't very high on the list.

Wow. That makes it an even bigger chunk taken out then, so yeah, no idea what that other guy is thinking. Would you take a job and move your family without considering the tax rates and what that means you really bring in? For anyone with common sense, that answer is no.

Were they even relevant this season? I mean sweet sixteen last year a first weekend flame out. Yeah I know all about Uts success vs Kentucky but not on the national stage

Yeah they were relevant. They were ranked #1 and in top 10 for most of the season. I can’t stand UT but I can still see when they’re relevant

Typically, you're agent would figure all of that into the deal (gross up offer by 13.5% just to account for additional tax load). That said, it's likely that UT counters with something that is equivalent, even if it has more bonus money and less guaranteed, and perhaps over a longer period...

Money won't decide this. He will have to figure out if the possible 'regrets' of not going for it are greater than the current situation.

He's in a no-lose situation currently.

I hope he does go to UCLA...UT can slink back into its rightful every-15-years prominence.

If he were to go to UCLA, he would still be judged by what Wooden did, it's a lose lose situation no matter what he were to do out there. Alford did alright and they fired him, Talk about culture shock going from Tennessee to California to live.

He wants UT to counter at 4-4.5 million and then he stays. Barnes and Westwood are not a match

A guy on TN board says Barnes has called meeting with the team. Not sure how credible, but if true doesn't sound good.

Here's the comment from the TN board. Rot Roh?
"Anyone listen to Sports Talk? Just got a message from someone that Hyams said he's been told Barnes is meeting with the team."
