Refs are terrible

Shows is among the worst. They blow so many calls that all you can do is hope it's close to even by the end of the game.
In the Arkansas game, the refs were missing calls both ways. There was an obvious stepping out of bounds that wasn't called. There was an obvious hook that wasn't called. I believe in no harm no call but the refs are missing game changing obvious calls.

They’re bad, and even worse when your coach is constantly yelling and screaming at them (and his players simultaneously). Cal doesn’t realize how much his antics on the sidelines hurt his team, in multiple ways.

Shows’ fifth foul call on Holmgren was absolutely a terrible call. Holmgren was completely vertical and did not initiate contact. But that’s Doug Shows. Big tv audience, critical player to a team, late in a tight game and here comes Doug with the “big” call of the game. CBS pays billions of dollars for the tv rights, fans buy expensive tickets, and 68 teams are entered all so that Doug Shows can be the referee.

Agreed, but those last two calls on Holmgren determined the outcome.

The 5th foul was questionable only because his arms did have a slight forward lean, but the 4th call was good. At 7 foot, he should have been able to allow the player to commit to the shot before going after the ball. I am not giving a 7 footer many calls for simply trying to block the lane to the basket.

Was watching Baylor UNC game and started out rooting for Baylor. After the flagrant against Sohan, those refs took that game over and did everything they could do to keep the 1 seed in business. I never root for UNC EVER to win. It was so blatant I couldn't help myself. Several other posters felt the same.

This game wasn't that.

How do you let Arkansas body up everybody on one end and call Holmgren for that nickel and dime stuff on the other.

Gonzaga lost because Arkansas won just about every 50-50 ball all night, and you could call Timme for hooking the defender seven times a game, but Holmgren was carrying Gonzaga in the second half and Shows took him out of the game with those two blocking calls, both times within earshot of the Arkansas bench. He's terrible.

Arkansas loves him now but they'll be singing a different tune if they play Duke and he's on the whistle.

Yes he did and made some typical UK calls all night. Even went to the monitor a couple times for non flagrant possible flagrants.
I have no idea why the fool kept going to the monitor. Give me a break. If they had called a flagrant on the foul to the basket, I was going to stop watching the game. However, I am glad that some team is stopping the SEC from absolute total embarrassment.

Agree. It was a foul but the defender’s hand was clearly on the ball the whole time. NO reason for that to be reviewed.

I thought it was an and one. Didn't in live action but it sure looked like continuation in replay.
Based on the the rule, that wasn't a one-and-one. He wasn't elevating the ball into a shooting position. It isn't like the NBA that considers it continuation if you don't put the ball on the floor.

Yep. It was a foul on the floor or a three. Not both. Nance and Raftery had a good cry about not getting the 3 and 1.

Even the ESPN guy this morning said they were crappy calls, and he then said "that's not why Gonzaga lost"

And just remember, these are supposed to be the best of the best. As you move along in the tournament, supposedly the highest graded referees are the ones assigned to work these games.

This shows you the absolute ceiling you can expect from these dudes.

I like when the refs are doing a Dook game and they get so hyped to make a 30/70 call go for Dook they do that little hop-hop-hop-karate chop "Dook's ball" call. Sometimes you can see them trembling with hormonal discharges when they're doing it.

The moving/flopping charge calls have just gotten out of control. If a defensive player just falls down, there’s a 50% chance of a charge.
This. So much this.

The NCAA has to find a way to stop rewarding people for sliding into drivers and falling over, but because they haven’t we now have players on every team who play defense by trying to draw charges by sliding into/under offensive players. I hate everything about this.

The fact that the announcers were praising the big Ark center for taking 50+ charges this year shows how bad it has become.
