OP, I think "Tomorrow" should have been your song of choice because, again, Rutgers is always a day (a year, a 7-year rebuild?) away. Chris Ash just signed the worst or next to worst class in his league and, yes, we're all pleasantly surprised, if not impressed, because his 1-11 drilled the program even farther into the ground in 2018.

But, hey, cool your jets. Only at Rutgers can fans be giddy that their head coach, after his third year, just signed the 13th best class in the B1G. God bless you for gloating that Chris Ash exceeded the extremely low bar that his past performance had established. Of course, he failed by every other reasonable metric.

I am glad some on this boards spirits were uplifted by yesterday's developments, nothing wrong with that, however, the reality is that the players in the class will need superior coaching and leadership if they are to help Rutgers rise from a bottom feeder in the B1G. This would require Ash and his staff to raise their game significantly, and unfortunately I have seen nothing in the last three years to indicate that they are capable of such an improvement.

Unfortunately for us, our games are played against those other teams that are part of the "rest of the country" so until we can recruit better than them or out coach them, we will continue to see 1-3 win seasons.

I really don't see where the optimism comes from. This staff pulled the recruiting plane out of a nosedive and managed to keep it from becoming a giant fireball - and that's to be applauded - but I haven't seen us gain any altitude or change my overall impression that this pilot is going to crash.

Sorry if I'm not super hyped for the 61st ranked class in the country just because I had thought it'd be ranked lower than 70th.

Okay, I'm buoyed by the fact that we didn't lose a lot of our commits. Having said that, our coaching needs to be better; much better.
Over the long haul, our recruiting also needs to improve. I am thrilled that the recruits that we have were not as disillusioned by a one win season as our fanbase, but as the saying goes "you are what your record says you are." My hope . . . is that these kids come in with a chip on their shoulders and prove the recruiting world wrong. We've had these overachievers before; NEED to be able to coach them up.

Zap you as a pro athlete should know there is always a light at the end of a tunnel. When you played I am sure you gave it your all every day and I am just as sure that there were days the results weren't what you were looking for
If you were in an 0 for 25 slump and then went 3 for 5 were you happy about the 3 for 5. Being happy about the 3 for 5 doesn't mean you weren't upset about
the the 0 or 25 Yesterday was RU's 3 for 5

I'm with you TODD..take it for what it's worth. A decent recruiting class on the heels of a very bad season. Plus add in Singleton and Langan. If people still want to harp and find the negatives, let em have at it. Enjoy the lump of coal under the Christmas tree too.

Average ranking is a ******** measure. Toure is way under-rated and we have 2 Jucos who did not get the benefit of camp bumps in ratings. The top 5 B1G teams have an average rating north of 3, and the remaining classes are for the most part indistinguishable.

To you point, more specifically, I was referring to having to start a true freshman at CB.

The LB play was not up to par and that may be a case of addition by subtraction.

My point still stands: we played our Big Ten mates tough outside of OSU/UM. We're not that far away. The scores speak for themselves.

But if you want to be miserable on one of the few days of joy, that's your prerogative.

Hypothetical scenario: Next year RU wins B1G championship....These guys would be bitching about the first 3 years record rather than enjoying the moment.

Is it an average ranking, though? Average ranking for a P5 team is 36th. We finished 58th of 65 P5 teams.

I just don't see this as a "day of joy" right now. It was a day of "huh, not as bad as I thought" (we could have been 65th of 65 teams, right?).

Hoping that the team surprises me next year and it all somehow "clicks" for Ash, but until that happens, it's tough to get excited for "more of the same".

I'm at the point that where I think we are so far behind at the QB position that nothing else matters. And yes, I'm very down on McNulty, the offense is mainly his responsibility. I see a 3-9 record next year, 4-8 tops, and then the Hot Seat flares up again starting mid season. I do hope I'm very wrong, but if Sitkowski fails, the O line fails, which are high probabilities, the opposing defenses will stack the boxes again, and the run game bogs down.
In retrospect , casting Flacco aside, was a criticial error. Our QB options are a very suspect Sitkoski, and totally unproven Freshmen Snyder and RS Freshman Langan, who couldn't make the 3 deep at BC.

I think along with you a lot. BUT, I like to look at it as not being pure Negatoid.Instead I think of it as the "Missouri Attitude". SHOW ME. At this time I feel that I have been cheated out of 3 years of RU FB pleasure.

Nothing wrong with 'negatoids' after a 1 win season. However, the people who want their negative prediction to come true for their ego's sake isn't good. There aren't that many like that though. Most will be happy if Rutgers starts beating other teams up. Yesterday was a positive day. Some of the players who signed are better than their star rating. I tend to be more impressed by other offers and not ratings, so I agree that Toure falls in the under-rated category because of his offer from Wisconsin. Ever heard of addition by subtraction? More experienced doesn't always mean more productive. Singleton and Fogg will be an upgrade at the linebacker position. Bottom line is there needs to be more production and it may come you lesser experienced players.

I have - it's used to try to be optimistic in the face of personnel losses, but frequently doesn't work out that way.

We have four returning juniors that saw time this year at LB (Fogg, Maddox-Williams, Fatukasi, Battle). No one else has seen any real burn. It's possible that Conti/Toure may be in the mix for the two deep.

Seniors: None
Juniors: Fogg, Maddox-Williams, Fatukasi, Battle, Mitchell (Juco), Singleton (if he gets a waiver)
Sophomores: Anderson (transfer from MD), Barnwell (switched from RB)
RS Freshmen: Jennings (switched from S)
Freshmen: Conti, Toure

The LB room isn't in too bad of shape, and probably will be the strength of the defense next year - provided the juniors all round out into upperclassman form and Mitchell brings something as a Juco. We add Mitchell, Conti, and Toure... and may add Singleton if he gets a waiver not to sit a year, though he didn't see any time on defense at Michigan.

The secondary is much thinner. Hampton and Wharton were our two best playmakers back there, and we were already thin last year. The DLine is also thinner, losing Bateky/Wilkins, and already not having a lot of quality depth.

Overall, I see the defense taking a step back next year, while the offense takes a small incremental step forward. Having Ash be the DC all year should be a big help, though, assuming he steps into that role.
