I am late to the post and was actually answering the OP, but between you and I, I am not sure how it was fair that Tebow is penalized but supporting BLM is not.

I frankly prefer it done the way the English Premier league does it. Both teams stand for the anthem and then take a knee right before the opening kickoff. When done that way, there is zero question what they are kneeling for, and they are not causing controversy with the folks who don't like anthem kneeling. When it is all said and done, there are always better ways to support your cause. Pissing off a lot of Cat fans who disagree with kneeling during the anthem, is never going to help your cause. EVER!!
This.

Ppl like @bkingUK keep acting as though the only answer is racism. Most those same people feel just as strongly about people not removing their hats or talking through it. I’ve seen people strongly corrected for that. You can say “they said it’s not about the country or military” but now you’re telling them how they should feel about the flag and anthem. While that side is telling you “it isn’t about the issue they are protesting but how”. You don’t get to tell other people how to think and it doesn’t invalidate either sides view just bc you don’t feel the same way about a flag and anthem.

If You’re trying to unify it’s best to not use a divisive means and shock value to make the message. If you truly cared about the message you’d want it to be received and not misinterpreted. If you do it the way the premier league does then it only leaves one topic to be discussed.

It’s communication 101.

Define how kneeling during a song is offensive?
Define how not removing your hat during the same song is offensive? It isn’t a race thing. It’s purely about the anthem.

Just because you don’t hold it in the same regard as other doesn’t mean your view is any more correct. You can’t tell people how to feel about the flag and anthem.

If you want to message to be received it’s best to find a method that doesn’t immediately polarize.

They have the right to protest however they want and I’ll support the right. At the same time I’ll never agree with the method. Standing, hand over heart and a fist raised would at least still show a level of respect. I’ve buried too many friends and seen too many spouses worlds end when handed the flag for “that song” to not hold more weight to me.

At the same time I understand it isn’t as emphasized growing up today and unless someone has a direct connection to it that they may not view it the same way.

I think there has been an effect on Cal. I think he could say or do anything to and with the fan base and they would swallow it whole. He found out differently. Kentucky fans are about Kentucky BB. We are behind you win win or win. We enjoy talk about overtaking UCLA with National Championships. We are about winning Championships. We are about being the "Gold Standard" of all of college basketball and beyond. Lets just say its been awhile since we have won a ring. Since the last Championship we have been to the NIT and if we are damn lucky might go back to another one. KY fans are very knowledgeable about basketball. Its hard to smoke us as long as your winning and winning big like your supposed to. You start losing 10 games a season and thats a problem. At present we will be lucky, damn lucky to get out of January without 10 loses. If Cal is back next season it will be brutal at home games. There will be no margin for errors for Cal next season. It will be all about bottom line stuff with him next year. Having gone to UK games since the 50s I really have not seen fans go after a coach like I anticipate for Cal next season. We shall see,,,,,,,,,,,,,

A caller on KSR alluded to it this morning, but you can’t deny the fact of the timing. Go back to January 5th, we played a pretty good, tough game against Vanderbilt and appeared to possibly have turned the corner. Then we roll into Florida and curb stomp them to the tune of a 20 point victory and all of BBN is feeling great.

Then we find out they knelt. And everything has gone downhill since. Whether you agree or disagree with the act itself, you have to wonder if the backlash from the fans hasn’t caused this whole debacle.
Nope. No way to blame the fans for this.

This team lost to UGA last night in Athens. UGA is the worst team in the conference.

The talent/coaching of the team is THE problem.

Trying to blame the fans is a loser approach.

I actually think both are true. We obviously aren’t very good. It probably did shock them how backwards some fans are. Did it have impact on performance? Who knows.

But it certainly changed my perception of our fanbase and makes you question if these are the people you want to be known by. So, it wouldn’t shock me.

if I felt the same way you do about UK fans, I wouldn’t support anything to do with the sports programs. How can you cheer in lockstep with a bunch of racists?

It’s laughable. I can’t take it seriously. It’s like you’re forcing people to explain that standing is just a custom, carrying no inherent value, and that kneeling was simply a way of showing solidarity. But no, you choose to change the subject matter and you choose to be offended. And the goal is to promote your political ideology rather than just admit black people have had a tough go in America.
Yeah, Obama, Oprah, Lebrainless, Sharpton, Jackson, Clyburn, etc.....not buying your argument.

Do white folks in the eastern part of Kentucky have it easy????

Here’s the straight truth from my perspective. Even if you disagree with BLM, even if you’re a conservative, if you want to attack black players for making a stand on racial equality, you aren’t a good human. Simple as that. End of story.
IF we're going to talk about equality and representation....this team would look a looooooooot different.

And let's be perfectly clear, there is nothing offensive about kneeling during a song to highlight the unequal treatment of people of color in this nation, unless you are a racist.
I have no problem with the kneeling, but I think it’s narrow minded crap the way you’re presuming anybody who does must be racist.

It’s the national anthem for Americans of all races, and some folks happen to think it should be shown more deference than others. You don’t get to decide what is offensive to someone else.

Well, not saying the OP is right. But kneeling right before the Florida game hadn't yet given the team a chance to experience any backlash. It started after that game. So, while they beat UF, they hadn't felt any heat from the fans over it at that point.
Have they been booed at Rupp over this?

Nope.

So just to make sure I understand:

The same people who have whined for two weeks about the Uk fans who were offended whining are now whining that those uk fans whining somehow effected the kids basketball skills and mental stability?

Yeah makes perfect sense.

Before anyone goes there, I wasn’t offended they kneeled it’s certainly their right to do so in this country. However, I would not have done it myself. To each their own.

I will never understand the obsession with the Confederate flag. They seceded, they lost, and that flag, in addition to “heritage”, represents a time when black people were not treated as humans. It’s no different to an old German person today proudly who grew up in the 30s proudly displaying a nazi flag.
Some are making the argument the American flag is as equally offensive as it too flew over states where there was slavery.

You want to take down the US flag.....because that's the next target.

Brooks lead the way with the kneeling, which of course came after he defamed Rupp and said they should change the name of the arena because of his first name. Went on the totally blow his wad against UF and has been awful ever since.
Right there is where Cal should have stepped in and provided some historical context of Rupp and UK.

He missed that opportunity.

What makes the statement or the offense racist is that many of those same people who take such great offense at kneeling in the name of our veterans support(ed) a president that called our veterans losers, denigrated a POW in McCain and called our generals war mongers. That's when it becomes perfectly clear that the offense is less about the kneeling and more about racism to anyone with an open mind.

And let's be perfectly clear, there is nothing offensive about kneeling during a song to highlight the unequal treatment of people of color in this nation, unless you are a racist. The evidence is clear, heck white people can storm the capital and get escorted out of the building with no violence from police, and if you choose to look the other way (which is everyone's prerogative) then you are being a racist because it means that you don't believe people should treated equally regardless of the color of their skin. But we know that we have a huge swath of the american people who are racists running around proudly displaying Natzi signs and flags and confederate flags which was never more evident than this year.
You sure do run with twisted facts and flat out lies. Typical I guess.

What makes you think he doesn't agree. I don't know if anyone has noticed but Cal leans more than just a little bit left.

If you want a conspiracy I will give you one. Why is it that this team decided to kneel on the same night that Keion Brooks appeared on the floor. I mean this guy is mia from games forever, but he is flying around dunking the ball and looking good to go during practice. Then he comes back and bang, something that never happened during the thick of the BLM movement happens.

No one mentioned herd mentality or a majority dictating morality. That’s a straw man argument. And ironically the rest of your argument lacks any objectivity, which you’d think it wouldn’t given your pointing to subjectivity.

Now, let’s get objective. (Most) African Americans are descendants of slaves. African Americans couldn’t enjoy the same rights as you until the 60’s. Many African Americans were incarcerated and targets of drug laws, and Institutional racism, while admittedly less engrained today, has prevented equal opportunity.

The majority of our team is black. Our former president was embraced by white nationalists. Trump supporters invaded the capitol. Innocent people did die because of police officers.

And if you can’t understand why a black player would kneel you either aren’t paying attention, disagree with solidarity or your political programming is simply in auto drive
It’s easy to understand. It’s pure virtue signaling to try and feel good about themselves. The same reason my social media is flooded with pictures of vaccination records and people saying “look at me, I care.” People want to feel morally superior and have their back patted by others in their tribe. It doesn’t provide an effective action to remedy the problem they perceive and doesn’t offer any potential solutions. It just turns into “either you agree with me or you’re racist or in denial”. They basically copycatted what a few NBA teams did who were copying an NFL player. It’s always been a dividing issue and I know people of all races who support and condemn it. There are ways to positively impact your community & build bridges but this has never done anything more than cause division

Wouldn’t shock me at all. Hard to play with pride for the jersey when there is a segment of fans not worth representing. The question is if they understand it’s a small segment or a majority.
they are to busy representing drug dealers, and other low life criminals thats who they are knelling for.

Against racism. Against police brutality. Against kneeling during the anthem. Against bashing players. Thinks players have to realize that if they kneel, many people view that not as a statement against racism but against America. Thinks some fans over reacted. Thinks coach Cal has mishandled many things this season. Thinks Coach Cal has done some great things over his time here. Thinks he must adapt if he wishes to have continued or regained support from fan base.

Those that make that argument are stupid, and I don't want to take down the US flag. If we want to get all vexillology in here you can note that the iteration of the US flag was different in that time period and our flag has evolved. Plus the Union won, so, no to your straw-man.

I guess the same freedom of speech that allows players to kneel, doesn't apply to those voicing displeasure?

As for playing with pride, I'm guessing most are playing for draft position first and foremost.

I take it you approve of Biden. BTW, he attended and was the main speaker at the funeral of Senator Bird which was a Dragon in the Ku Klux Clan

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in Sophia, West Virginia.[10][13]
