Well, he did call Fitzgerald the most underrated coach in the B1G. Perceptions of NU from the Dark Ages persist like a cold sore, but they are changing.

They have a LOT in common with Michigan. Give them credit where credit is due.

1. Annoying fans
2. Can't beat dOSU
3. Can't win the division
4. Lose the last game of the year
5. Most of their program success was when people wore leather helmets or no helmets

Because it's really ******* hard to win at Northwestern. Pat Fitzgerald is just much better at the job than pretty much anyone else before him.

Changing? Pretty much always get the back handed compliments like this one. I don’t think that will change until we consistently get to the Big Ten championship game and win a few and we actually beat Michigan and OSU instead of playing them close.

Look at the pre-season polls for next year. Most have Nebby and Iowa ranked ahead of us. Why? It’s perception. Whether us NU fans like it or not, every fan base in the West think they can and should beat NU next year. Do they have the same opinion about Michigan?

Well, he's underrated because not only is he coach of the year, but he really should be recognized as coach of the century. Maybe best coach ever in the history of the universe.

Agreed. At this point, the only thing missing from the resume is winning the "big" game. The obvious one is winning the B1G, but even beating OSU or Michigan (regularly) would go a ways toward changing this view.

Re polling, the perception is that those programs have more "talent" than NU and thus should be ranked higher. I don't necessarily disagree, but execution matters more, and this where our staff and players excel. The lack of mistakes (penalties, fumbles) by our teams is remarkable. Generally, this is how we win---via attrition. It is a very good formula for a team that generally lacks elite playmakers at "skill" positions.

I am sure Nebby uses their top 20 preseason rating to reinforce to prospective recruits that Frost is a savior and we won’t suck like we did last year. The narrative around NU is twisted to be “they are a fluke, a one year wonder”, they will be passed up, look at the projections for 2019 Mr. Hot shot football recruit. Poo poo them all you want, but being ranked in the pre-season is good publicity.

Agree with this. I take umbrage with the constant use of terms such as minor miracle etc. Fitz has had such success and winning is no longer a miracle. This is through his hard work and many others. I just find it insulting to not recognize the changes made throughout the entire athletic department during the last two decades.

I think the preseason polls are driven more by Money than perception. Sports writers and coaches who are paying attention know that NU has moved to the cusp of the top third of the B1G. Telling the world that doesn't tickle enough eyeballs or sell enough sweatshirts because the fan base is small.

Absolutely right! We are already in the top 4 of the B1G over the past several seasons, and have played #3 Wisconsin pretty even in the decade.

Hard? Yes. But now easier than ever before. With Fitz going forward I would argue that there are only 5 teams in the BIG where it’s easier to win a lot. OSU, Michigan, PSU, Wisconsin and Nebraska. And the latter 2 don’t have insurmountable leads over NU. Talk in terms of playing for a BIG championship and the number shrinks to 2 or 3.

There is still some of it, a lot of it, by media that kids largely ignore.

Adding to it is being like +1 all year in point differential. Easy to say we got lucky, like when we had 3 straight OT wins

Plus, teams that are "defense first" unless they suffocate opponents, just dont get a lot of notice.

Finally, no superstars, no flash, just do your job. Not sexy.

When the Conquistadors landed, the natives thought their firearms and steel swords were minor miracles. It's all a matter of perspective.

Those of us who remember winning 3 B1G titles in 6 years don't think it's as impossible as others who weren't around in those days. And those who insist on speaking from an experience which was during a period of a relative lack of success compared to the time when we were winning the B1G, perhaps should consider that their views aren't really worth much when it comes to talking about what is required to get to a level where you are winning championships. How would they know? They do have perhaps a good perspective on what's not good enough and maybe even what not to do. And on evaluating how hard it is, is it a surprise that someone who has never been a part of achieving a B1G title would think it's so hard? My kids thought riding a bike was impossible, until they did it.
