I don’t get Reibs, Doesn’t seem like a D1 player yet alone a B1G. I actually would like to see the 4th string walk on guy more then Reibs. I feel like Pike is forcing the issue here just because he has a scholarship.
The one B1G game he played more than 10 minutes, he scored in double figures. He might not be a starter level player, but to compare him to a walk on is not accurate at all. Look at Nathan when he comes in - a walk on in his 5th year - and tell me Reiber in his 2nd isn’t much more talented.

I sure as **** hope he is more talented than a 5th year walk on. But take a step back and think about the fact that you and I can actually have a argument about this. I hope I’m wrong and he develops, but he just looks out classed.

There is no argument. Reiber has shown flashes of talent the last few games, knocking down a couple threes, driving and dunking, making good cuts and passes and the rest of the board has taken notice. Seems like a weird take especially since how he's contributed the past few games

And I’m saying it’s an absurd and inaccurate argument. Kid has a lot of work to do, but he’s got talent.

Luke Nathan is here to be a good locker room guy and vocal supporter on the bench. He is not here to actually play.

I think he’s too slow . I see difficulty with him going up and down the court with consistent speed ?

I don't think his speed stands out one way or the other in terms of a straight line run up and down the court. Seems fine there. I think his quickness is in question. But I'll also note that sometimes it's hard to distinguish between a physical lack of quickness and mental quickness for young players. Being a step slow can be a physical or mental thing, or combo of both. The mental part can come with experience. This is especially true post players where it used to be assumed that all but the elite took at least two years in the program before they were ready to contribute.

Bottom line Rutgers isn't getting enough consistent scoring from the center position.

What in the world are you talking about??

Myles Johnson averaged 8PPG last year. And Cliff averaged 3.8 PPG, despite missing a few games with an injury.

Cliff is averaging 11.3 PPG this year by himself, before we add any potential points from Agee or Reiber.

RU is better on the offensive end this year vs last year but is not as strong at the 5 on the defensive end.

Reiber has to be able to spread the floor and should take open shots on the perimeter, if he is open.....BUT Reiber has to gain more confidence, more post moves and better hands while playing inside the paint.

The 5 is more than OK, especially if Reiber keeps improving.

I don’t see Dean ever being a “good”B1G player. I do see him as a serviceable 5-10 minute guy which is more than I’d have said two weeks ago.

I haven’t been impressed so far . Seems he’s not ready yet and should be sitting and developing.

Sitting behind whom? Agee is is a 5th year senior, but clearly not up to the task, so Reiber is Cliff's only viable backup.

Reiber is practically a redshirt freshman. He only played in 12 games last year for a total of 70 minutes, and this year he’s appeared in only 12 games for a total of 76 minutes. So 146 total minutes in 24 games since he got here.

For reference, when Myles was a redshirt freshman, in his first 24 games he played 420 minutes, almost 3x as many minutes as Dean. If you multiply Dean’s stats by 3, his numbers compare favorably to Myles.

For example. Dean has 6 blocked shots in 12 games this year. If he played 3x more minutes that projects to 1.5 blocks per game. In his redshirt freshman year Myles averaged .7 blocks per game. I think if you do the same thing with points scored, Dean actually comes out ahead (Myles was a better rebounder). And we already know Dean is an outside shooting threat, which is a bonus.

Nice analysis. The young player has good potential, and kids seem to develop under pike. Does anyone remember what Paul, Geo, Ron looked like as freshman? And how they played? These guys come in as boys and leave as men. I'm excited for Dean.

I'm going to disagree here; Luke Nathan is here to be an excellent scout team player. It's been mentioned over and over by the team, the coaches, etc. that Luke takes the role of other bigs in scrimmage and is really skilled at picking up their tendancies/nuances of the opponent. He's also way more physical on the court than you'd expect (which we saw in, I believe the Michigan game) but just doesn't have the strength to back it up, or the skills/speed to make a difference in full play. Dude has no fear though, what a fantastic teammate to have.

Coaches probably let him get away with murder in practice to simulate Garza or Kofi.

It's funny, with how tall our team is now, Reiber definitely doesn't seem like a big when it feels like Caleb and Mulcahy are practically the same height and size.

I agree and would like to see what he can do as a 4, playing alongside Cliff at the 5, Harper 3, Caleb 2 and Geo running point, just for a 4-minute stretch to see how well we play, on both sides of the floor. I don’t think Pike has tried that combo yet.
I’d switch out Paul for Geo. Paul is our best PG.

Problem is he can’t guard smaller quicker PGs - Toussaint would have been able to penetrate at will tonight if Paul was guarding him. I’d throw the press on Paul if he was the primary ball handler too, he’s struggled with that a bit.

Paul makes plays best off the ball after the offense is set up and off the wing, where he can back down his defensive player to score or pass.....he is not going to be reliable enough to be a PG......the dribbling isn't as sharp and his dribble into a double team and getting the ball stripped and stolen at the end of the game, which resulted in Iowa tying the game, could have been extremely costly.

Paul battles and is getting better, but he is a playmaker.....don't mistake or confuse being a playmaker with being a PG on offense or defense, they are not close to the same thing or responsibility.

I’d like to see Reiber pull his man out a couple of times and set him up for a 3. He’s been giving some serviceable minutes lately but it’s really obvious that he’s not as big as he had been perceived to be. He looks to be as big as Mulcahy.

Pike isn’t forcing the issue, he is developing his backup post player. While Reibs is still developing and learning, did your take on him change after the Iowa game?

Agreed. And Dean has shown a little more quickness each game. He is often able to make decisive moves, especially on offense. And you can see he is giving max effort out there.

This is called DEVELOPMENT.

Kudos to Dean and the staff! Keep improving!

Reibs is improving and gaining more confidence.

I’ll say this. If we want to go from a consistent bubble team to a consistent top 25 team we need more athletically gifted players at every position. The team had to go with what appeared to be four wings and a PG last night because of lack of front court depth. Luckily our wings are very tall and lengthy.

This is why we have the expression "the game is slowing down for him." That's exactly what we are seeing.

Yikes, lots of bad analysis in this thread. Probably the same guys who thought Doucoure was going to work out for us because "he has a nice outside shot"...lol

Dean is a talented player. He understands the game and has good instincts. This was evident from his HS tapes and his minutes last year. Adjusting to the speed of the game at this level is his biggest hurdle right now. He's going to be a good one. Book it.

Reiber had a total of 76 minutes played last year in 13 games(5.8 min), 2 10+ minutes gms. vs Iowa and Purdue. How you can judge a guy his freshman year in limited time is beyond me?

20-21 13 gm, 76M, FG 3-10, 3pt 0-3, FT 5-6, 10reb, 1ast, 3stl, 5blk, 5TO, 11 pts
21-22 13 gm, 85M, FG 12-24, 3pt 2-3, FT 2-5, 18reb, 5 ast, 1stl, 7blk, 6TO, 28 pts
His defense has really improved this year, has a better team def. efficiency than Cliff in his limited possessions on the floor.

He has had 161 total minutes played through his extended freshman year, 3rd/4th string last year, 2nd/3rd this year. He is showing true development that comes from coaching, experience on the floor and learning from mistakes being a public school, non sneaker company recruit. Our bench outscored Iowa 9-0 yesterday, pretty important 4 pts each from Reibs, and a nice ast to Ron, and Ralphy.

EO could barely dribble the ball up the floor his freshman year, last I checked he is playing for the Dallas Mavs.
2016-17, first 17gm at Rutgers, 10.1m/g, FG 9-36, 3pt 0-8, FT 13-18, 39reb, 20ast, 8stl, 3blk, 17TOs, 31pts

Just let the kid develop.

Especially with bigs. It takes longer. If they aren't blue chip recruit bigs, even moreso.

This board lovessss saying freshman stink. Overall the eye for talent is not good here. Caleb EO etc etc

Reibs still gets 'out of control' at times and rather than anticipating D gets caught reacting - and he's too slow and gets caught with bad fouls......

All that said..... he is improving LEAPS and BOUNDS!!!!. his outside shot making is a fantastic tool - and his passing is way above Cliff at this point.....

From having NO substitute 5...... we now have someone who can give meaningful minutes.... and that's big for us.

I love how every white player is labeled as slow and unathletic. I hate this stereotype, Dean has shown more potential than most of the bench. He finishes around the basket, can hit the 3 and I see no issue with his hands for a freshmen. By time he is a Jr he will be in the starting lineup and we will be very happy about that.
