Pike's use of Reiber

As we have seen his role expand over the last handful of games, he has shown us flashes of what he can be for us, and at the very least he can play at the big ten level.

That being said I think pike is using him in the wrong role on the offensive end of the court.

Reiber's skill set is that he can stretch the floor for you as a shooter and has enough juice that if he gets his defender in the air or flat footed, he can use his athleticism to get to the whole.

For some reason though, pike keeps posting him up when he is in. He should be used a pick and pop guy, or a cutter (as we have seen mulchahy find him a few times on cuts). There is no reason for him to be posting up as he doesn't have a single post move that could get him a basket.

Anyone agree or think this is the wrong take on how we use him?

I agree and would like to see what he can do as a 4, playing alongside Cliff at the 5, Harper 3, Caleb 2 and Geo running point, just for a 4-minute stretch to see how well we play, on both sides of the floor. I don’t think Pike has tried that combo yet.

I don't think we've seen enough from him just yet to determine how Dean could be best utilized. And it's kind of funny that you use the word "athleticism" for him since a group of "know-it-all" posters said just a few weeks ago that he wasn't even a D1 player, let alone "athletic". I think he has potential as a face-up 5, but I also think with some added muscle, he could play some back to the basket as well. He just needs to develop and play within the offense as Cliff's back-up for now. I trust Pike to use him the best way for the team. I think Dean is going to be a very good contributor as the season progresses and certainly in the next couple of years.

I like him over Agee unfortunately who I had some hope for.

i agree spreading him out a bit could lead to some easier buckets driving as we’d reduce lane traffic and should definitely be built into some sets.

I haven’t been impressed so far . Seems he’s not ready yet and should be sitting and developing.

He might not be ready yet but he’s our next best option to spell Cliff lol.

Reiber needs to bulk up and improve his conditioning (seems to get winded quickly, probably because he’s outsized), but I would definitely prefer to see him out there over Ralph.

I agree it is nice seeing that he is ahead of the 2 year schedule some of the "experts" had set for him. He offers another skill set. Like that he can shoot from away from the basket, offers the potential to go outside when Cliff is out coupled with Hyatt as a 4 who could provide rebounding inside.

Reiber is not (yet) at the level where Pike is looking to create a game plan to optimize his performance. His role is to kind of stay out the way and keep shot blockers from wandering away from the rim ..or to make them follow him to the corner. Reiber would like to take a single dribble but that is not in the game plan at this level. I think he used his hands well on defense but he sometimes gets his feet tied up. Sometimes he jumps when he should be boxing out or seeling in, but that is a problem with the whole team.

Watch clips of Dean the last 5-6 games and you will see nice improvement. He is showing more confidence, a little bit of scoring, grabbing some rebounds and his passing has generally been good. Everyone’s right another 20-30 pounds of muscle will make him much tougher. Game plan should be for next year is to find a real backup to Cliff and target Reiber to be our 4.

Do you not worry about offensive rebounds when he’s in the game?
Can others drive to the rim if he’s away from the basket?

Reiber is not even close to being a 5 in the B1G. He is not wide and is what, 6'8". He is better than last year but I believe doesn't have the size to do much in this league. He gets overpowered by just about every big in the league. Scary this is our backup center.

Good topic and I have mixed feelings. I think he's a better option than Ralph, and has shown more in the past few games than I would have expected. That said, though he's the better option, he's not a good option. As for him being a four, I assme that continues Cliff at the five. I guess it would be worth a try for a few minutes (if only we could expect some blowout wins). I'm not sure whom he'd replace. Remove Paul from the lineup and put Ron at the three? Having Caleb and Geo with Paul rotating two positions may be a plus. Not sold on it--especially on the defensive--but would be nice to see if Pike can pick the right spots.

You are definitely on the right path. Pike envisioned him as a pick and pop stretch when he recruited him and has also said he is athletic. We have only seen the athleticism in a couple of games with that fake then dribble around his man fir the flush last week. Pike has not let his bigs shoot 3’s with a green light and I think both Dean but also Cliff can both hit 3’s. But Pike does not like a lot of 3 attempts in general so I think that is why it is not encouraged which I believe is a mistake.

However, Dean can make a move down low but he has to just slow down and see if the defender is hugging him or giving him space. Nothing wrong with him hitting an 8 footer if given the space. He has to keep working and developing with the coaches as he can become serviceable down low as well.

He attempts 3 threes on the season and makes 2 of them in one game and we got him stretching the floor already? I don't think he needs a pick and pop, if he really wants a clean look at three anyhow. I'd be surprised if people started respecting his range already. If bigs were that far out of the paint, yea, he might be fast enough to blow by them perhaps. But in reality, I'd still have him closer to the rim to clean up rebounds and layups. And maybe it's not the current game plan for success, but as a big man, he needs to know how to play down low and utilize his quickness in the post.

How about Cliff at 5, Ron at 4, Dean at 3 if we are recreating the lineup.

That gives him mismatches and leaves Ron where he is best.

Obviously he is defensively limited. But as the OP suggested, if we optimize his offensive skills (and he and Cliff combine for 16 - 20 points a game), that does take away from the points given up.

Bottom line Rutgers isn't getting enough consistent scoring from the center position.

Dean at the 3 loll no stop.

We also don't want Dean at the 4 bc that takes away from Hyatt's minutes. Right now he is the backup 5 out of necessity and that position we have zero depth
I'm just saying if we want to muck around and play coach we might as well be creative and go outside of the Box, so to speak.

Doesn’t have to be exclusively a 5 or 4.

When i said that I didn't mean that as a go to offensive set. I meant that as I'd rather see him pop and then he is left with a wide open jumper or he moves the ball.

I just think when he is in they try to use similarly to how they use cliff (minus the lobs) and he's way less efficient in the post

I would love to see Dean Reiber play alongside Cliff, and use Hyatt and Agee as main backups at 4/5, probably means moving Caleb or Paul to the bench, most likely Caleb. Analytics says it is the right move.

Off. Possessions / D.P. / T.OffEff / TDE / T.EffMargin / +/-
Cliff Omoruyi 658 663 108.8 91.5 17.3 91
Dean Reiber 102 102 104.6 89.8 14.9 17
Ron Harper Jr. 809 807 107.5 93.4 14.1 92
Paul Mulcahy 723 724 105.6 92.3 13.3 83
Geo Baker 603 598 104.6 91.7 12.9 90

Caleb McConnell 655 658 103.5 92.0 11.6 48 (strong 6th man)
Aundre Hyatt 388 392 104.4 94.5 9.9 32

Mawot Mag 246 242 104.2 106.3 -2.1 -17
Jalen, Ralph and Oscar are 10-12 in Off vs Defense efficiency

On Paper, that's the way the rotation and lineups should play out.

Yes, yes it does.

Dean is not even remotely a 3. This is madness. Not everyone can play 3 positions on the court. We will never see Dean at the 3. Ever.
I think you mis-read my post (or I could’ve been more clear). Reiber doesn’t have to be exclusively a 5 or exclusively a 4. He can be a little bit of both. I agree, not a 3.

I was just tweaking the thread. A good natured trolling to see what follows.

You don't think we should run plays for Reiber on the wing? ;)

I don’t get Reibs, Doesn’t seem like a D1 player yet alone a B1G. I actually would like to see the 4th string walk on guy more then Reibs. I feel like Pike is forcing the issue here just because he has a scholarship.
