re: going to Texas and salary, Drew might not be taking a dip at all and, if so, it'll be minimal. This is an article from last spring both WR and TE coach earned a base salary of $375K and were up for salary increases going into the season. Also:

Moving from Brooklyn (heard that's where he lived), where a decent apartment is probably $3500/month to Austin, a beautiful college town, where a decent apartment is probably $1000/month. Sometimes taking a step back in your career is worth it for future opportunities. Maybe he recognized his own shortcoming and the shortcomings of the situation he walked into and decided to cut his losses for later gains.

This is certainly the key. Would be nice if Ash goes out of his comfort zone to make the best hire possible. And hopefully the budget is there to support the hire.

Look at Merringer's decision objectively, and not as a Rutgers fan for a second. I'd be willing to bet coaching on the Rutgers Football staff stinks right now. Everyone says Ash is a very temperamental guy, and given the way the season went, Ash must have been very hard to work with.

At a glance, Texas Football has a much bigger upside than Rutgers does. Also, Merringer is close to Hermann. You can't hold this move against him. It makes perfect sense.

I doubt this will be the only change on the staff.

He had to go. You can't blame it on players. Many of them are three stars so they can play. Unfortunately, OC could not get anything out of these players. He was way overrated. The offense was embarrassing.

The only way this is bad is if he left on his own accord, because Ash disturbingly gave him a vote of confidence after the pitiful year he had. I hope he was nudged along by Ash knowing the kid was in way over his head, and the vote of confidence was nothing more than coach speak. This is a great opportunity to right a wrong. Long-term couldn't be better.

BTW he's not going to be a "position coach." He's going to be the "passing game coordinator." Tad bit of a difference and you wanna bet he takes very little, if any at all, "pay cut'? I already posted what Texas' WR and TE coaches made in 2015 prior to a pay raise last year: $375K PLUS $650/month car allowance and a $10K membership to the UT "club." He made $450K here. Probably lands right in that ballpark if not more I'd guess.

Mehringer is probably scrambling a bit mentally after that season. I'm thinking he realizes he is not ready and saw an opportunity to go back home in a comfortable environment. A win-win for everyone here.

APP says he'll be the "passing game coordinator," so it sounds like Herman might run the offense with a pass game and run game coordinator. If so, that's a lot more than WR coach.

We need to hire someone with a solid resume. Hobbs needs to step up like he did for the basketball assistants. I would be focused on someone with gameday results over recruiting prowess. Ideally the candidate has both attributes but we need an experienced hand here. Other than DM who are thought to be the strong recruiters on the staff?

He's going to coach with his friend, at Texas, not Salisbury State. I think some here are looking WAY too much into this. Just my humble opinion though.

I always figured he'd go back to the Texas/Oklahoma area but not sure it would be as a WR coach, thought it could be as OC somewhere if he was successful here.

Whether he was encouraged or not who knows. But think of if this way. He's got to stand on his own 2 feet here and quick or he'll tarnish his reputation if his numbers didn't improve quickly from last year. In Texas, he's got cover from Herman, he's back home and will have more time to learn and adjust and still have his career on an upward trajectory. It's probably a pay cut but Texas has a nice budget so he'll probably be compensated nicely and his career ambitions won't be hurt while he's under the umbrella of Herman for the time being.

In the end it doesn't matter, if he's not here he's not here we move on and hopefully find someone good.
