Next year when we have 15 turnovers a game and take 10 less shots in an already challenged offense if we lose Paul’s assists I don’t want to hear people saying “what happened to all our great passing/what happened to team ball why are we getting all these shots late in the shot clock” .. etc
Huh?

We only shot the ball late in the shot clock all year . In fact half of all of these assists everyone talks about was a pass late in the shot clock and a bad shot. If it went in then assist granted. We scored at a higher volume and had more shots with Paul off the ball. Turnover’s eye test and stats say we will be fine. I understand everyone’s emotional connection but he was the starting PG all year and we missed the tournament on one of the worst offenses in college basketball. If we made the change earlier we would be at msg tonite watching them play.

What if they turn the ball over more but score more points too?
Simply by playing a faster pace, having more possessions per game, they'll turn it over more.
Turnovers lead to pts for the other team. You only seem to care about scoring more points but Pike just cares about winning games. Paul gave him that.

I love a good Defense but was not thrilled with our Offense many times this year. I’m okay with playing faster if we win games. It seemed every time we scored a lot of points this year our D struggled and we lost. We need the balance to win but yeah, let’s score 70 and win.

We are NOT better without Paul wtf. He was obviously playing hurt. Also the trip thing probably took a lot out of him lol. The IU people were brutal to him for that.

I think he needs to recover. Go on vacation or something. He can come back refreshed.
Agreed need his leadership, experience, and toughness. Playing forward so he can utilize his post up and passing or 6 th man.

It’s pretty unlikely our offense is significantly worse next year than this year, imo, Paul or no Paul. That’s not to say Paul wouldn’t make a positive difference.

I’m feeling it’s the exact opposite. 🤷‍♂️
This is the enigma. Pike won’t replace him as a starter.
I definitely want Paul back. I don’t even understand how anyone could not. I could see arguing for a reduced role or a change role, but it is crazy not to want him on the team.
except, would he embrace a reduced role ? That’s the question.

Losing Caleb by itself makes our offense significantly better. D worse but hopefully Offense improves much more than D degrades

I don't understand why we want a guard to come here and play 30 mpg and average like 6-8 points and 3-4 turnovers who is average defensively.

Tell me I am wrong. I liked the kid a lot but not running the offense through him. We were a disaster offensively because of it.

Back to the basket dribbles down into the paint, shot fake, shot fake, pivot foot, shot fake, throw it into Cliff's chest when he is not looking and covered by three people. Turnover (crowd groans).

Paul has 422 career assists.
Eddie Jordan has the school record at 507.
If the all time record is important to Paul, that’s a great reason to return.

You can find a better guard OR wing in the portal without question. I think this one is up to Pike not Paul. I feel we know what Pike will do.
The decision is up to Paul. If he wants to come back, Pike isn't going to say no

I think you don’t understand PM — he is a team guy, and he doesn’t have to “embrace it.“ He will just have to make the best of it, which I think he would do, and it will still be a big role.

No, it means it's up to Paul. He can leave or stay and whichever he chooses will 100% be the outcome
So that means it’s on pike, choosing not to go and upgrade and allowing Paul to return to the detriment of the teams progression.

This is going to sound critical but I promise it isn't. I think Paul is a good basketball player and an asset to have back but he is not a good leader. Too emotional, too temperamental on the court. I felt like our team was missing a steadying presence on the floor. I would love to have him back in a smaller role, I think the burden of leadership was a detriment to his game.

Basketball is not all analytics. It’s also about style of play. Paul plays slower and more deliberate. I don’t know whether we’ll be better without Paul back next year but I do know what our style of play will be if he’s back as our primary ball handler.

Lol no

Why are you trying to turn Paul's decision into Pike's?

Seems like you are trying to put this out there to blame Pike if Paul comes back and plays poorly next year

Good point! Pike has to replace him and get over his loyalty. Will he except it ? I think playing in the Mag role early would allow him to utilize more of his game and keep his minutes up.

Good Point! I think you can only say It’s only on Pike if he allows him to be starting PG at 35 plus min. If he comes back and plays off the ball at forward then it can’t be on Pike. Since we need more shooting once Mag is back you move Paul into 6th man.

Pike isn’t going to sandbag the season to mollify Paul. But Pike holds all the cards. If Paul truly will accept being a backup, he will stay. Otherwise he will ‘retire’ as no other high major program will take him as a starter either. My guess is Paul’s career is over and he’ll relish celebrity status at the RAC going forward.

Pike sandbag this year by refusing to make the change over the last 8. Cost us the tournament. I hope he learned

but in reality Paul's experience would be a plus as a 6th man next year
and filling in at SG and SF according to who the opposition has playing.
Can't understand how some feel he isn't an asset.
Why would he want to come back as a 6th man?
I think we can do better at the point in the portal, combined with minutes there to Simpson and even a few to Cam/Griffiths.
Paul isn't athletic enough and can't shoot well enough/refuses to shoot enough to be an effective B1G 2 or 3 over the course of an entire season. Especially with Cam and Griffiths as the starters at those positions.

If Paul leaves, we really should be an attractive destination for a portal guard

If we replace Paul with a portal bust, it's going to really hurt

If we replace Paul with a more athletic portal stud, the team could be even better next season
