Don’t know where you’ve been, but here on Earth, that’s been reality for a long time now. Maybe it’s not your thing, but these areas have been on the upswing for 1-2 decades.

Generally agree, but no part of Greenville is anywhere near, let alone north of, Montgomery Street. And the “okay-ness” of Gville, Bergen-Lafayette, and West Side is a block-by-block issue. I recently looked at a house in Lafayette and one in West Side near Lincoln Park but they got snatched up.

Yeah I should have specified Communipaw for BL...I still can't believe some of the deals that can be had outside of dtown. Even the Heights has some deals still.

I think the area around where they're putting the Bayfront stuff on the West Side could be a good investment opportunity.

Downtown has gotten a lot better since then

Especially on a Devils or concert night.

Youll see lots of people walking around

yeah, I’ve been working downtown for the last 20+ years (though remote since last March). There’s been a lot of progress since then. That Whole Foods is nice, and there’s been a lot of residential development downtown (Walker House, the old Hahne’s building, etc). If I were inclined toward city life I would definitely look into it.

With that having been said, I’ve been commuting daily from Montclair for the last 15 years. Depending on where in Newark you are working, traffic during rush hour can be bad. When I would drive into the office at 7am there was little traffic. Pre-COVID I mostly took the train. The ride is fine.

Do we need to go back into how JC less crime than Nashville?
Yeah but does he actually live in the Music City...or rather a soulless suburb? Probably hasn't even ventured to Vandy's campus as yet. It's in the scary city afterall, lol.

At one time Newark had the highest percentage of their workforce commuting into the city than any other city workforce
I managed 4 different, Gino's restaurants
in Newark, and had an armed guard at my side.
At all times.
I also managed 6 others
in other towns and cities
and never needed a guard.

Does anyone care to know what this person plans to do for a living in Newark or is qualified to do ? Might help provide guidance.

That was a long time ago. Gino's has been gone for a long time

The bars I've been to in Newark, only a few had armed security at night

Most don't, especially in the central business district

30 years old and looking at a job in Newark, and would be moving in from out of state. Wondering, for people who know the area..... where would you recommend looking to live? My girlfriend would have to stay where she is for now with her job, but eventually would try to find a job somewhere in the area as well. Is the commute from Hoboken doable? Are there any good areas in Newark to live? Would probably look to rent for the time being unless there was a buying opportunity for cheap (given the environment I doubt that right now). Any input would be appreciated!
In '66 through '69 I worked a Pru in Newark. We used to go out for lunch and shop in the surrounding area. Don't think you can do that now. Anyway, I lived in Sayreville and took the train from South Amboy and it was very convenient. I'd walk up from Penn Station or take the city subway to work if the weather was bad.

You absolutely can go out in the area around Pru and to the east into the Ironbound. Plenty of good places to eat

Worked in Newark for 28 years, retired 2 years ago. Know people that live in Newark. Several of their homes broken into, ironbound section.

Couple fellow workers had their cars stolen, street parking.

Market Street area is not great, was hassled and more there myself just walking at lunchtime to shop.

I walked around all the time at lunchtime, broad street to library, Rutgers bookstore, Military Park, PSE&G, Ferry Street, etc. some places better than others.

Any city these days you're gonna have to keep your head on a swivel

The criminals and crazies have been emboldened and more were released into the streets

But, near Prudential in Newark is mostly not bad at all during the day

If you move to Beirut will they at least filter your Web access so you can't troll every NJ thread with delusional fabrications about how much better Tenntucky is?

If so, please make the move.

I’d put my kids in Nashville public schools, and Beirut’s, before I’d do so in Plainfield, NJ

When I worked for Pru many moons ago, I lived in Montclair and it was an easy commute. They had parking at work. Many guys lived in Hoboken. I moved there after I started working in Manhattan and it is great at your age. Parking is always an issue if you have a car but, as others have indicated, you can take the PATH to Newark. Good luck!

There seems to be a lot of Pru alum in this thread, but I guess that shouldn't be too much of a surprise, given the company's HQs is in Newark.

What’s wrong with Plainfield? You ever been there?
There is one area of Plainfield which has still some large vintage homes” jockey hollow” I believe it’s called. 30- 40 years ago it was still ok . If you are into gangs and questionable areas then it’s a place for you. Those pushing certain areas because of transportation are ignoring the realities. Most of them live nowhere near Newark ,or in Newark but are willing to see others pick the those specific surrounding towns. Why not Irvington, Elizabeth , East Orange , Orange ? They are all close to and have quick access by trains and buses. Hey but to each his own. When they give you a suggestion ask them where they live? Tells a completely different tale.

Sleepy holllow . Jockey hollow is for the horses. I doubt many people on this board live in the towns you mentioned . But there is a decent neighborhood or street in all those towns. The mayor got to live somewhere

Either or Plum it is the only possible area in that town ... on one side is S.Plainfield... N.Plainfield... Scotch Plains Fanwood. There was a great Soul Food Restaurant on Front Street but nearer to Fanwood. The name was Fresh Water ... real southern cooking . It was a regular stop for us and people who loved unique entrees and a distinct soul food menu . The owner and her hubby decided to move back down south because area had drastically deteriorated and people only wanted to drive in the area in daylight not after the lights went down.

I live in Newark but I have to say Harrison is growing bonkers! One stop on the PATH or you can walk on nice days. New apartments are being built and rented right now, and they are mostly people your age.

Not near downtown, but a few years ago I was hanging with my cousin who stopped in to see a buddy at his firehouse in the North Ward.

I saw the liquor store next door, Firehouse Liquors, thought, I might as well, stopped in for a Bud tallboy, brown bagged it and downed it right outside while my cuz was chatting away with his bud.

I think it's a rough area but it wuz fine that afternoon

It depends on what floats your boat. The OP is single, he would not be concerned with the school system. He will get a lot of value for his dollar though...

There are several historic districts in town that have beautiful homes and quiet tree lined streets.... Van Wykes, Sleepy Hollow, Hillside, Sheridan Park...

I worked in Manhattan supervising security sites from 125 th St down to the WTC from 10 PM to 5 AM for several years. I had no concerns walking around at those times.

Even when we had armed guards at MetroNorth shops.

Picking up my company car in Newark in our fenced/barbed wire parking lot and going home on Broad St at 5 AM, I was concerned. Never stopped southbound on Broad St red lights.

I grew up in the Vailsburg section of Newark. My father was Newark Police and he patrolled Vailsburg. It was a great pace to grow up but later developed into one of the most dangerous parts of the city. Did not go to Public Schools. Sacred Heart Vailsburg for grammar school and Seton Hall Prep for HS. Moved out when I was 17.
In those days I rarely went to downtown Newark. Had relatives in North Ward and Down Neck (you need to be from Newark to know what that means). Later I did my MBA at Rutgers Newark at night. Mostly it was in and out right after class, save for the occasional post class beer at McGoverns. Nowadays I go into Newark for events at the Prudential Center or to Ironbound for restaurants. Would not recommend living in the city.

Since I lived in Irvington back in the “ good ole” days. I can visualize exactly all you mention Big Lou about Newark , Down Neck and Vailsburg was an entirely different place back then. My biggest error was not going to St.Benedict’s or the Prep ... lived 1 1/2 miles from Seton Hall. Played against many great high school players but did not want another 4 years of parochial school.
