OT: Working in Newark. Where do you live?

30 years old and looking at a job in Newark, and would be moving in from out of state. Wondering, for people who know the area..... where would you recommend looking to live? My girlfriend would have to stay where she is for now with her job, but eventually would try to find a job somewhere in the area as well. Is the commute from Hoboken doable? Are there any good areas in Newark to live? Would probably look to rent for the time being unless there was a buying opportunity for cheap (given the environment I doubt that right now). Any input would be appreciated!

What type of rent are you looking to afford? Lifestyle? As is smaller town with nice town center or more City life” like a Hoboken type of area? Drive to work? Mass transit?

If you plan to commute by train, check the different train lines. Raritan Valley Line, Northeast Corridor, NJ Coastline etc.

Many commuter villages are popping up at train stations.

I am sure there is a good area in Newark, I just don’t know where . It’s a city with high crime rates though. Commute from Hoboken on the PATH train is doable . Being 30 is still a decent age for the Hoboken bar life , but just be careful 30 turns into 40 quick and life can you pass you by . Living it up in the Hoboken bar scene pushing 50s is not a pretty sight.
Do you want a city or suburb ? Plan on having a car ?
Asking where to live on this board, must be taken with a grain of salt. Most people on this board tell us they drive luxury cars and live in only the finest of neighborhoods

This! I worked a few jobs in Newark near Halsey St and it was terrible. Came out to my work van at the end of the day and someone defecated on my tire. A few days later was a daytime shooting a few blocks away. Six months prior to all this a coworker has his car broken into twice. So dont move anywhere near there.

Go west of Newark. If you’re driving stay on 280 corridor - west orange, Livingston, roseland. If you’re doing the train, I would look at Millburn, Summit, Morristown. All nice towns. I did the Livingston to Newark drive and then the Livingston to Harrison to WTC route for years.

A lot depends on what type of social life you want but this is a good start. Before her current job, my wife used to work in Jersey City for a few years. She would get the NJT Raritan Valley line at the Bound Brook stop into Newark then take a path to Jersey City for her commute. She didn't love it but it wasn't horrible. Lots of condos/townhouse developments are popping up along the RV lines stops. Check out the different towns and see what interests you.

Nj transit train sucks . If you decide on NJ transit and figure out the commute time to and from your home , you should then add 45 minutes each way . Call it the NJ transit tax

Morristown ! Train station , great bars and restaurants , hospital in town and GREAT history with a green in the middle of town to hang out on during nice days. Plus you can learn about where Washington and his army stayed for two winters during the revolution including the worst winter of the war. The list of greatness for this town is endless .

Depends on the lifestyle you want. Hoboken to Newark can be a pain. Harrison is up and coming. Nutley, Lyndhurst, and north Arlington are decent suburbs. Rutherford has a nice downtown. Again, all depends on what you’re looking for and the setting you want.

Worked in Newark for about eight years. Live in Dunellen, about a 45 minute train ride. That is on the afore mentioned Raritan Valley Line. Lots of closer stations - Westfield, Cranford, Roselle Park and Union

I have an apartment that just became available in Belleville if you are interested. Your commute would be easy. What exactly are you looking for size wise and price wise? We normally do a year lease, but I would be willing to work with you if you wanted a shorter term to tide you over, etc.

Have worked in Newark the last 13 years. Spent the first half in Hoboken. Commute on the PATH was about an hour door to door with a 20 minute walk to the PATH, 15 minute walk to my office from the PATH. Jersey City would be a quicker commute, don't have to switch trains.

Then Montclair for the last half. Lived close to the train, so took NJT, but keep in mind Montclair train comes into Broad St train station, which is about a mile from Newark Penn Station. That was about 45/50 min door to door.

Driving from both of these was a nightmare. In general driving into Newark sucks.

Some folks have said living in the Ironbound section of Newark is not too bad. Might be worth a quick look if you prefer to live closer to work, in-town. Walking distance to Newark Penn Station, Prudential Center, even NJPAC, as well as Red Bull Arena in Harrison.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Montclair. I moved in with my now wife after I did Hoboken. On the pricier side, but beautiful town with great restaurants and people. Perfect for someone early 30s right before you do the house/family thing.

And it's like a 15-20 min car ride to downtown Newark

Been working for Pru in Newark for 20 years, well 19 in Newark and 1 from my bedroom. Settled in Denville, drive is very reasonable. Plenty of folks on my teams over the years in your age range do the commute from Hoboken.
Moved from Westfield to Denville and love it. Morristown is a great little city and is close. One of the best parts of NJ.

My Aunt spent her career at the Pru. In fact, she was president of the retiree organization for quite awhile (PRIA I think???? sp?). She is now 92 and no longer active.

If you want suburbia and have a fairly quick commute to Newark you can try Cranford which is 3 stops away via NJ Transit( you can certainly drive too). Cranford has a pretty good downtown with bars and restaurants and a range of housing.

In terms of Newark, the one area I would recommend is the Ironbound district. Added plus are the great Spanish/Portuguese restaurants.

Surprised that nobody mentioned Jersey City. I know several people who work in Newark, at least pre-COVID, and live in Jersey City, which has some nice neighborhoods and especially convenient for those who don't want to drive.

Second Jersey City. I have clients in Newark and the commute is easy as cake. 15 mins on PATH from Grove Street, 10 min from Journal Square. The trains come every 4 minutes during peak hours and since everyone else is going the other way there are seats available.

PATH is 1,000 times better than NJT rail.

if you’re interested in Newark, I’d concentrate on the Ironbound neighborhood, specifically the northern parts closer to Penn, or near Washington Park

One thing about ironbound in Newark, if you plan on having a car, good luck.
