I love Brad Pitt as military men and tough guys.
Fury
Inglorious Bastards
Once upon a time in Hollywood.
He should have never been categorized by me as underrated….lol
As for Paul Newman, you gotta admit, just off the top of my head HUD, Somebody up there likes me, The Sting, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict,The Hustler!!!!
I can’t turn those movies off an no Oscars.

Add to that The Color of Money, The Verdict and Butch Cassidy.
I think he won an Oscar though for The Color of Money.

I was all set to list Paul Newman in The Verdict but Zappa beat me to the punch. Paul had the misfortune of being nominated against Ben Kingsley in Ghandi. I still think Paul deserved the academy award for the Verdict over Ben but it was a very close call. I think they gave the Oscar to Paul for the Color of Money as a makeup call because he lost out in The Verdict.

Daniel Day Lewis is a fantastic actor who should get more recognition, particularly in the Gangs of New York.

Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister)

By far the best actor in GoT
C'mon now.. Tyrion the Imp (Peter Dinklage) is at least as worthy.. the whole Lannister Clan was worthy (even Lancel who went from an effeminate **** to a cultist).. there were many fine actors in that series.. I don't think anyone distanced themselves all that much.

Daniel Day Lewis is well known as a fine actor. I think people are missing the point of the OP. Doesn't matter how famous they are... it is for people who are not famous for being a great actor but are, indeed, great actors.

An actor can be famous because they are very popular. Consider Chris Pratt. Very famous. Very popular. But is he famous for his acting ability? No. Is he a fine actor? He just may be.. his performance in the series The Terminal List is very good. But it takes more than one fine performance.

I agree with your view of the OP’s original point but I think the thread has morphed into favorite roles played by actors, both obscure and famous, who gave terrific performances.

And that is very fitting and in the spirit of the thread. As shown earlier, it highlights why a star like Tom Cruise might deserve to fit the topic while reminding people of a great performance of his... like Collateral... Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx below...

I'll change that to first among equals. :) :) :)

Another Jeff Bridges movie I liked is Against All Odds, 1984, with Rachel Ward and James Woods.
Another Jeff Bridges vote...specifically for his 'Starman' role and his rather unique, quirky alien take.

"You are a strange species. Not like any other. And you'd be surprised how many there are. Intelligent but savage. Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? [Shermin nods] You are at your very best when things are worst."

I am also a sucker for any movie that makes our "species" look noble lol. That is becoming more and more difficult to believe as each year goes by! Go RU!

Definitely appreciate Cruise, as well as Foxx. Foxx has a great range. Cracked me up as Electro in the 2 Spidey movies.

Someone mentioned Pratt, but I prefer the other 2 Chris's (Pine & Hemsworth). Pine does a good Kirk & was good in Hell or High Water & Finest Hours. Hemsworth played another Kirk plus was good in Rush & a good heel in Bad Times at The El Royale.

Another of Cruise's performances, one which seems to be forgotten, is Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. Darkly funny and quite different from his usual roles.

Just saw Chris Pine in The Contractor (2022)... Showtime has it now. Does a great job.

As for Chris Pratt.. if you have not watched The Terminal List series on Amazon Prime, you have not collected enough information.. imho.

Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors. But seven academy award nominations is hardly underrated.
