I really like John Cusack for this category. Whenever I partake of a discussion of who our greatrest actors are, his name rarely comes up. But he has been in some very good movies. Quirky, but good:

High Fidelity
Grosse Pointe Blank (one of my all time favorites.)
Say Anything
Better Off Dead
The Grifters
The Sure Thing
Con Air (belongs in the great bad movie thread)

His sister Joan may belong in the underrated category as well.

I like Jeff Bridges for this also. Yes, he is a star, but not often mentioned as one our "great actors."

The Big Lebowski (a classic)
Crazy Heart (another of my favorites
Last Picture Show
Fearless
The Fabulous Baker Boys
I love the scene in "Better Off Dead" with John Cusack and the newspaper boy over $2. I thought it was hilarious how the kid just badgered him.

Two Paul's -- Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti.

Jon Lovitz, I personally find to be one of the funniest people on the planet yet he is never regarded as such.

Also Joey Slotnick, largely unknown, was excellent in some of his roles. Particularly as Woz in Pirates of Silicon Valley

Paul Dano is good in everything he does...I agree

Pirates of Silicon Valley,

did Jobs or Gates buy that up?

haven't seen it in the listings in forever.

an interesting watch.

Agree. That's an excellent movie. In my opinion it is the best movie about Apple and Microsoft that has been done

Idris Elba- I like a lot of his supporting roles. He's starting to become a lead actor more.
Oscar Isaac-he's starting to come into his own
Don Cheadle- I'm having a hard time remembering his last bad flix
Mark Ruffalo-I like his movies as well.
Cheadle is a fantastic actor. One of my favorites. And he’s definitely underrated.

too many above are too well known, and already recognized

one that I think that qualifies is Richard Jenkins.... rarely gets a big role in a movie, but does a solid job..... one of his lead roles was in "the visitor"....

If you have not watched "The Old Man" on FX.. also stream on Hulu.. or pay to stream it elsewhere.. like Prime.. your thoughts on Jeff Bridges will be positively confirmed.

Someone earlier mentioned Oscar Isaac.. dude is in everything and he is really good in everything... the farily-good-but-strange Marvel series "MoonKnight".. he carries the show showing his range well.

And in a different thread, I mentioned the actor (actress) Sonya Cassidy. She played a leading role in the series Lodge 49.. showed some range.. never would have guessed she was English. That performance seemed pretty simple.. but in seeing her in these last two roles... how convincing she was in that Lodge 49 role when she can easily play these other roles.

She is in two current series.. "The Man who Fell to Earth" in more of a supporting role alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor who should be included in this category even if only for his role in this series. And Cassidy is also in this last season of "The Last Kingdom" which is a period piece from when the Angles met the Saxons.. again, a supporting role but an important one. I think she will be getting a lot of roles based on this expanding resume.

Another Jeff Bridges movie I liked is Against All Odds, 1984, with Rachel Ward and James Woods.

I am entertained. Gladiator and Master and Commander are two of those films if I am flipping channels... even with commercials.. I will stop when I see them.. not that anyone just flips channels anymore.
This thread resurrected from the dead!
A good topic GoodOl, what are the movies that always grab your attention and you seem to never tire of?
I have a list of a hundred including the two you named.
How’s The Sting and Glory

Had not realized this was a necro thread... Nov 24 2017 and resurrected today (not by me, but glad it was.. give the Oscar Isaac recommend was from almost 5 years ago.. well done,

koleszar

After nearly 5 years, there is clearly more that can be said about these actors. Like, I never thought I'd see Jeff Bridges in a role like he has now in The Old Man... but that validates the thoughts about him.

I remember your thread, zappaa.. it was a good idea. I'd bet in another 5 years there will be a few more movies to be added... but classics are not made every day.

Okay, gotta stop this madness right now. How are Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe underrated? Like, at all. They could all be near the top of a list of "biggest names in Hollywood over the past two or three decades." Not exactly flying under the radar.
I don't often agree with you and love my man Zap- but sat there asking myself? WTF? 3 of the biggest actors in history and very well known movies. And then someone adds Russel Crow- Let's add in Leo as well and I think we have underrated actors covered lol

Mine- Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda

Stephen Dillane. Stannis Baratheon in Game of Thrones (probably most famous role), Lord Halifax in Darkest Hour, Thomas Jefferson in John Adams (my favorite of his roles). Was also in The Hours and played Harry Vardon in The Greatest Game Ever Played.

Would also say Paul Giamatti..

I would argue that some actors are big names... and stars.. but not known for acting talent. They play pretty much themselves.. or a caricature of themselves.. every time.

Could anyone really name Tom Cruise's best performance? They are all the same, no?

Ooh.. speaking of GoT... the guy who played the bastardly bastard in The Battle of the Bastards... Ramsay Snow/Bolton... amazing actor.. starred in the BBC series Misfits that ended in 2011. Haven't seen him in anything since... name is Iwan Rheon. I see some voice work.. looks like I'd have to learn Welsh to watch his latest series.. "Y Golau"..

Actor Jonathan Banks who played enforcer Mike Ehrmantraut in "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul."

But I remember him first as Frank McPike, FBI senior agent over Vinnie Terranova, deep undercover investigator played by Ken Wahl in the 1987-1990 show "Wiseguy."

Better acting in Born on the 4th... but Rainman... same guy we see in all his stuff.

I found this page discussing his best performances... I was thinking of "Magnolia" but could not remember "Collateral" until I saw it on that page.. he was real good in that. I wish I could remember Tropic Thunder and his role in it. But he has so many famous movies where he is a movie star more than he is an actor and I think that was the point in including his name on these lists... under-appreciated as an actor because his star-power blinds us to his acting.. on average.

Funny Yes,
Not sure what I was thinking about😊

Was gonna say Born on 4th of July ...great movie. RAIN Man great, too, but I think of Hoffman more than Cruise.

Tom Cruise's 80s stuff was, generally speaking, much better than his later work, imo. At that point, I'd watch a movie because he was in it. Now I'd probably avoid it because of that, or watch in spite of if it sounds good enough.

John Cazale - the guy made five major motion pictures and each was Oscar nominated for Best Picture.

The Godfather
The Godfather II
The Conversation
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter

In those five movies, five different actors were nominated for Best Supporting Actor - Caan, Duvall, Pacino, DeNiro (winner) and Walken (winner)
