Anybody else hear that it's closing? Maybe I'm dating myself, but I've always known Tumulty's to be there. It's a New Brunswick institution. No idea on the reason.

OH NO!!! Many really good memories there and still some of the best cheeseburgers in NB. It's just very old school and I think it had a tough time competing with the Johnny-come-latelies.

This is so wrong on so many levels. Had my first beer in a restaurant at Tumulty's. Must have been '85 or '86.

Like many others, I'm very sad to hear this. Tumulty's have been a mainstay for me in New Brunswick - been going to it since I was a freshman, and have brought my family to it.

Wedge salad and Manely's Mess was the order. Sad to see it go, but honestly, it didn't seem like the owners really put any money into the restaurant in quite some time. Looked a little run-down when I was there last year.

Wow, I always liked that place .
Why is it closing ? Hard to imagine they didn't have enough business with the offices , school and residential around there .

The wedge of lettuce, loved starting a meal that way.
Beat me to it.

Had my first wedge salad there.

I hope they auction off the train set.
Me too.

Might want to change the title.
They are NOT closing, just a change in ownership with some possible alterations.

Still should be called Tumulty's.

Now I don't have to rush over for one last meal there...
We always got a good laugh out of the giant lettuce wedge. Hopefully they don't change that.

Glad to hear it'll be sticking around. You don't have to be a Rutgers guy to love Tumulty's!

I went there a few times a year with my parents when I was young. Kept going a few times a year with the wife and/or friends. Still go with the kids a few times a year.

I hope the menu stays the same. Good burgers and wings. French dip. And the wedge. Yum.

Glad its not closing. It was a go to option to meet friends before football games where we didn't have time to tailgate as well as before basketball games. Usually packed with opposition fans as well which makes for interesting conversations.

celebrated my 20th birthday there, i was the youngest of the crew, so the only one that couldn't partake legally....though that had never been an issue there prior.....not to be on my 20th birthday....I cried in my giant wedge of lettuce while my friends got drunk around me to my honor.......until we went to Maritas Cantina & then The Melody...

Loved Tumulty's. The wedge and a cheeseburger got me through my graduate work in the early 70's.
Glad it will remain open.

I go back to the time that Frank and Helen took it over in the early 60's. Had my first legal drink there. On one particular cold February evening a couple of my fraternity brothers were there pondering our fate and the next thing you know , at Frank's encouragement, we were off on a road trip to Miami Beach. Went back there last year (obviously different location) when in town for our 50th class reunion. Fond, fond memories of Tumulty's. Long may it live.

The original location Tumultys was always a hot spot on weekend nights , especially during home football games. Does the Train going around the ceiling still work? I haven't been in since about 2012.

"In 1937, Peter “Brains” Tumulty began operating a tavern at the corner of George and Washington Streets in downtown New Brunswick. (Don’t look for Washington Street — it no longer exists) “University Pub” as the tavern was known, was a watering hole for a colorful blend of New Brunswick townspeople, politicians, students and businessmen. Rumor has it that if you had an inclination to place a wager on a horse, there were certain “customers” happy to help fulfill that inclination.

In 1962, Peter’s son Frank, a schoolteacher, and his wife, Helen, decided to buy the tavern and turn it into a restaurant. The Pub’s success grew until April 1, 1970, (yes, April Fool’s Day) when a fire destroyed the kitchen. Frank decided to tear down the old building, and in September of 1970, “Tumulty’s Pub” opened in “The New Building.”

Tumulty’s thrived during the “70’s. It was the “First Date” restaurant for many Rutgers students, a meeting place for businesspeople, and with model electric trains roaming the dining room, a great place for parents to bring their children.

In the late 1970’s, the revitalization of downtown New Brunswick began. With the support of the City and Johnson & Johnson, Tumulty’s moved to its present location in July, 1982. Frank and Helen retired in 1985. Their son Peter and son-in-law Bob Brandes have managed the business since."

Tumulty's was bought by the family that owns the Brunswick Grove on Milltown Rd. in East Brunswick.

That was my wife and my date place all through our RU days. You could get a great meal at a great price. Will never forget the wedge of lettuce. This was long before burgers were the in thing. Will miss it.

Use to go to the Pub when I worked summers at J+J for lunch. On Fridays at lunch they had an all the flounder you can eat buffet with fries, cole slaw etc for $ 4.95. The cheeseburger platter was too over the top for lunch and J+J was too close to walk it off. The Washington Diner across the street was good too.
But the best place was the Crystal on Albany St just down from the train station. Best chili hot dogs anywhere and the grill was in the front window to entice passers by. But the topper was unbelievable Rice Pudding a yellowish tint from the eggs. Always had some there and took some home. Place stayed open late and think it was Greek.
