Anybody successfully killed torpedo grass in their yard. I have Bermuda and zoysia in my yard. I have some patches of torpedo grass taking over. I hear there is nothing that will control it and it’s extremely invasive. Any suggestions to control it?

Learn to live with it.

I'd call a professional, it is really not that expensive. I think I pay $50 each time for them to fertilize and spray six(ish) times per year. It's worth it.

I feel your pain!!!!! 17 that ****. you cannot kill it according to MSU Ag Ext. However, you can suppress it. I have 3 patches myself that i've been working on. I have used every chemical know to man, both label and non labeled for residential use. Nothing by itself works, it actually seems to enjoy it. BUT, after researching and talking to gold supers, it's not hard to suppress but it is expensive. Tricor, Tenacity and Image all used as a combination works quite well. It will bleach your bermuda but it comes back strong in a couple of weeks if its healthy. Use the 3 chemical combo at label rates and repeat application in 10 days. Repeat again in another 10 days if its not disappearing.

The problem is the roots can travel up to 400 yards. You can actually pull a root up and stick it in RoundUp. You will see numerous little sh!ts dying out throughout your yard. The only problem with the live with it approach is it will continue to spread. if you can't deal with it now, you'll really hate it in 5 years.

I can vouch for the result, but waiting to see how fast it comes back and will retreat as necessary.

Good luck!!!!

An extremely heavy shot of quinclorac is your only hope.

Oh my Lord. DCD i'm glad you chimed in. That was my recipe for killing zoysia in bermuda. My apologies. I did treat torpedo also tho. Agreed on Q but was advised to ad Imazaquin and MSO to it and treat 10 days apart. it is definitely working well in my yard. Brain fart.

My experience is that only a non selective grass killer will work, & that kills everything, requiring resod. When I find new patches trying to take hold, I actually take roundup & a Q Tip & paint every grass blade. Obviously that’s only practical for small areas, but it’s worked for me & keeps it from taking over. Good luck. That stuff is nasty.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try some of these ideas and maybe have some luck. Heard burning the patches in the winter could keep it from coming back in spring.

While the experts are at it... I just found my mortal enemy in my yard..
View attachment 13551

One sprig on a couple of acres... But I am ready to wage war. Got tackled in to a batch of these in elementary school and had to have a bunch of them removed at a clinic.

What can I do to nuke Sand Spurs? I have mostly Bermuda, with 10% zoysia and a **** load of torpedo which I didn't know what it was until this thread... Just thought it was some **** variety of Bermuda.

Use Pastora @ 1.5oz/acre (plus 0.25% volume per volume non-ionic surfactant) as a post emerge treatment. Do this about 4-6 days after mowing. Repeat if necessary.

Then late winter/early spring next year, put out Prowl H2O @ 3qt/acre as a pre-emerge.

This should take care of your sand bur problem.

I have had some small patches of it pop it in recent years. Each time I find it, I did up that piece of the yard. The roots are easy to spot, as they are thick and white. I've had good success digging it up, pulling the roots, repacking the ground/grass and burning that ****!
