I usually leave a buck or two on a take out order - instead of waiting on a table, someone was packaging up my food in a bag. Less work that serving/bussing tables, but it's still someone taking time to make sure the bag is packed in a way that nothing spills or gets smashed.

I don’t tip on a take out order at a pizza or Chinese place but will tip on delivery.

I do tip at Chili’s or a place like that on a take out order.

For home delivery 10% pre-tax tops with a round down to nearest quarter. Never more than $5.00. Restaraunt I am 20%er for good service pre-tax. Bad service to 15%, really bad and its going down to 10% (very rare).

Have only left no tip once, but that was a pathetic service and once walked out with paying after waiting for an hour getting a single beer only to have the mgr come out and tell me the waiter forgot to put our ticket in. He offered no comp and said we could get a discount next time. Is said why the fruck would i every come back..
We both agreed I would not be eating there that night.

If i pick up a pizza in store $1.00 for the counter help, the kids work hard it does not change my life they love it. One of my kids worked a counter in bakery, they knew all the regulars, the tippers and the people that always tried to scam something for free by heart.

I never tipped on take out at my local pizza place (Emilios in Manalapan) and used to use a coupon too.....fast forward a few years later and one of the young men in my neighborhood managed to kill himself and a young girl that was with him in a car accident.

My younger son was part of the group that this young man hung out with. I found out through our neighbors that this pizza place had provided free pizza for one of the gatherings of the kids in our neighborhood.

After the funeral a couple of parents got together and bought some pies for the kids. I went and picked up the pies from this pizzeria and when they fond out what it was for they again refused payment.

Now i always order my pizza there and tip in the counter jar and never use a coupon.

The couple of bucks I was saving did not mean that much to me and was so deserved by this local business and their workers.

do people tip when they pick their pizzas up, I never have. Do you tip if you actually go and order at the register and wait...so whats the difference. I dont tip when I pick anything up. However if they are delivering then yes I will tip 20%. Should we also tip the grocery lady in Shop Rite or the deli guy slicing the meat

Fortunately, such horrible service has only happened to me a couple of times in my life, but I read once a very good "tip" about "tipping". If you really want to send a message, instead of leaving no tip, leave a very small tip (i.e. small pocket change). This way, the poorly behaving server knows that you didn't just forget to tip, or that the tip wasn't stolen by someone, but rather gets the firm message that their service sucked.

I don't tip on take out orders that I'm picking up. I'm doing the driving. If I opted for delivery, I'm paying a delivery fee plus expected to tip 20%. Since I'm picking up, that money stays in my wallet.

I don't think I've ever tipped for picking up a pizza but I do tip for other types of food that I pick up. Don't ask me why I differentiate, I just do for whatever reason. I usually tip about 10% up to 5 bucks at most. I tip 10% at buffets too don't know what the standard for that is either.

I've never heard of tipping on a pizza or Chinese, but if you order food to go from a Restaurant where it's a bartender or waiter taking care of your order I'm all for 10%.

When it comes to delivery, I usually go $3-5 unless it's an order over $50.

While at the restaurant and bar I'm a minimum of 20%. If the bartender hooks it up expect that to go up even more.

people that don't tip the owner/bartender are ********.

I'm confused - why would someone not tip a bartender but tip a regular server ?

Most Pizza places have a tip jar next to the register. When people pick up food they can tip.

Bartenders can make the most. They can get a lot more customer churn in 90 minutes and people often overtip bartenders for multiple reasons.

If I order takeaway from a restaurant with wait/seat staff and bartenders then I tip whoever is helping me. Tips are the system there.

I was referring to when the owner is bartending. I feel like a lot of old school guys have the mentality why do I need to tip when they are already making money off of my drink.

Got it. I always tip the woman who cuts my hair even though she owns the shop. She is still the one giving me the service.

I tip minimum 20% in restaurants/bartender assuming good service . If service is bad I will tip less , but It has to be bad . And yes that happens.
Delivery I tip, but not on a percentage just what seems to make sense . I always try to tip cash even when I am paying by card in places. People really appreciate getting cash . I would say a 15 percent tip in cash is better than 20 percent on a card. And when I am leaving cash I always makes sure it is handed to the server/bartender personally .
Still not sure what to do at takeout places. You are not waiting on me so not sure what to put in the tip jar. Usually throw a buck in . But if I don’t get any singles back and don’t have any I don’t tip. I am not leaving $5 or $10 for you to hand me my pizza .

Never thought to tip when picking up. IMO tipping is for the service. I do tip the delivery driver though. I’ll also leave a few bucks on the table when I’m eating at the pizza place and the girl brings the slices over and is attentive (even though I ordered at the counter, didn’t look at a menu, etc).

Not saying that I’m right. It’s just how I always thought of it.

That said, when i tip I try to be generous.

I don't tip when picking pizzas up, because it's just sliding it into a box and handing it to you. I do tip at restaurants where a lot of different pieces of an order are accounted for and packed in a bag to make sure nothing is missing, spills, or is crushed.

So, if I'm just getting an order of fried rice for takeout, I don't tip... but if I'm ordering for my family and picking up a big bag to take home, I do.

I got back from Switzerland a couple weeks ago. It was so great to not have to tip anyone.

If I have to provide the service, ie: go pick up from the counter and/or throw out my own trash if I eat in then I deserve the tip. You don't tip at fast food places, do you? Picking up for takeout is the same thing in my book. I don't get to sit and enjoy the experience.

I tip generously (20-25%) if others do the work. Delivery drivers get an extra bonus if they can make it in a reasonable amount of time in bad weather. What is reasonable depends on how bad the conditions are, of course.

Fast food places pay a different wage to their employees than servers get. An employee that receives tips can be paid as little as $2.13/hour.

Interesting how when they say you should tip 20% quite a few people started tipping 20% instead of 15%. I might tip a little more than 15% but don’t want to tip 20% unless the party I’m with insist.

When you pick up, whether at McDonald's, a Chinese restaurant, pizzeria, or Applebee's, there is no server. There is the person who answers the phone (unless you order online), the kitchen staff who cook and prepare the order, and a cashier who you pay and hands you the order (who might be the same person who took the order).

When you sit at a table, you have a server who actually serves you. They get your drinks and check to see if you need refills. They make sure your appetizer comes out before your entree. They get you a new fork if you drop yours. They check on you during the meal to make sure everything is OK. That is a whole lot more than someone handing you a bag.

And with a real server, at the end of the meal you can determine if the server did a good or poor job, and adjust the tip accordingly. With the person who hands you a bag, you would tip before you know if your order is correct or not.

Even if you think the person handing you a bag is deserving of a tip, they certainly don't deserve the 20% a real server would get. The bag handler does 1/10th the work of a real server. So maybe they deserve 1/10th the tip, or 2%. So on a $30 order, you're going to tip them 60 cents?

I used to not tip when I picked up. Then I thought about it. If you are frequenting a local pizza or Chinese joint on a semi-regular basis, you have probably used multiple coupons or discounts, plus just about every business is using a bit of e-business software, so they are very aware of you. They probably recognize your number and know your preferences. Not that I would expect them to doctor your order, but I'm sure you get a bit of special consideration if you tip occasionally. I don't tip all the time, but just enough to let them know I appreciate the effort.

I’ve been to many different countries, and it is only USA, and I guess Canada that does this tipping thing. In other countries, you might leave your extra change on the table, but nothing more. I was once eating alone in a restaurant in Chengdu, China. There was some other American there who left a tip like in an American restaurant. The waiter was so confused, so he brought the money to me. He thought I must know the other guy, but I didn’t.

Yes Bac. Always. Just a buck or two. I probably look at it differently because I worked in a restaurant for a long time.

You can't compare someone who works at Shop Rite with a restaurant employee. Two different industries.

Tipping in China story....In 1994 I went to Beijing on business and it was pretty backwards back then. I was handing out the equivalent of $1.25 tips and sometimes $2.50 tips to doorman, room service folks etc. This was BIG bucks in China back then. I was confused at the lack of thankfulness and recognition of my "extreme" generosity. I then bought a soda on the street for US equivalent of 50 cents and when I paid the lady she let me know on paper that I was handing her the equivalent of half a cent and not 50 cents. I then realized the tips I was giving at the hotel were not $1.25 and $2.50 but rather $.0125 and $.025. Well I did save some cash that way.....live and learn. Luckily for the recipients of my "generous" tips a penny saved is a penny earned. So there's that!

Yea this is wrong....
A hostess answers the phone and takes the order...then delivers it to a bartender who has to punch it in the computer...cook cooks it....food runner or server puts it in containers and bags it up plus a very important step adds any condiments (ketchup for the fries, blue cheese and celery for wings, lemons for fish), then delivers it to the pick up area...

Long story short tip when taking out from a restaurant...

Would some of those reasons be you're great at your job and exceedingly handsome? That's what I always told myself when I was bartending.
