Can someone explain why there is a shortage of toilet paper, given that the commercial demand for the product (offices, malls, restaurants, hotels, etc.) has evaporated?

All the kids were sent home from college and people are working from home, so the retail demand exploded. Add in the fear that people will run out, and the sudden demand in higher-quality toilet paper becomes clearer. The overall demand will reduce once people go back to work since there is currently an oversupply there.

Hoarding. It's a simple as that.
Yea but I'm surprised that it's lasting. I would have thought that would have petered out by now but still seems to be going strong. I think some other high in demand products have gone at least some steps back if not fully back to normal. Don't know why the TP thing still seems to be going strong. Once you have your stock how much can you buy. I suppose the only thing that I can think of is that it's become a vicious cycle creating a "new generation" of hoarders because of the shortage.

Some people are insane and panicking. I understand the shortage of hand sanitizer. Not everyone purchases this product, so the need/demand has greatly increased. As for TP, everyone uses it already. The nation produces enough TP for all of the butts in the US. There will never be a shortage if morons were not hoarding. This truly makes no sense.

A lot of people go to the bathroom at work. Now it all happens at home. It’s more than just hoarding, there is probably double the demand now.

The answer is simple. There are a lot of asswipes in this world.
Tony Montana was one of them.

It's like retiring and thinking you'll save money on heat and electric.
People don't think they can find it if they get down to a few rolls or whatever your repurchase point might be. Good thing Marcal is up and running on PTs again.

I haven’t had to try this but I have seen several folks mention that some restaurant supply companies are selling to the general public now. TP may not be the quality you are used to but better than nothing .

The country club that we belong to are selling a "Bonus Household Package" which includes:

4 Rolls TP, 1/2 Gallon Milk, 1 Dozen
Eggs, 1 Case 24-Pack Water Bottles,
1 Bottle Hand Soap, 6 Pieces Fresh Fruit

We haven't bought it, but I hear it is a popular item.

My wife hit the Costco in Wayne at 8 this morning and was fortunate to get a 30 pack of toilet paper and 12 pack of paper towels. Their Kirkland vodka is pretty decent too for the price :). Surprised they were allowed to sell it at 8am, lol.

I've been wanting to get and try thier vodka forever. No clubs within 45 mins of my sell it. Heard nothing but good stuff about their liqour. But not surprised as Kirkland brands are "mostly" superior private label goods.

The original hoarding caused a domino effect. It created a fear that if you go out today and buy just a 4 or 6 pack of TP like a normal person, that when you run out, there may not be any left. Thus, the person who never wanted to hoard, is forced to buy all they can when they see it available.
Same thing has happened with gloves and masks. People of supplies of hundreds and hundreds. Now, no one can get any. So, if you were to wonder in somewhere and see 2 boxes of 10, you are going to grab both. It sux but it is the reality

All the stores down here have signs out limiting purchases to 1 per person. Not sure if its being enforced but it makes sense.

It's like gas during a "gas shortage" - the overall demand doesn't really change but people feel uncomfortable if there's only 1/4 tank in their car so everyone wants to get to Full at the same time. If you are in the store and you know you have an adequate supply of TP at home, but god forbid what would happen if you can't get it when you need it, then what the hell i may as grab another package while I'm here. It then feeds itself and people start posting on social media that there is TP available at Costco and everyone goes running there. Simple fact is people are not crapping more or using more each time. There will be a rebound from this where all the manufacturers are going to have to shut their production lines down some time in the summer because everyone will have 3 months supply in their homes.

There is plenty of toilet paper. Just search toilet paper on ebay. The sellers go to all the stores and buy it cheap and sell it for a lot.

Different supply chain. Residential products and Commercial products don't cross paths. If companies are smart they will speed up with conversion.

There are a few places that have now started to sell their commercial shipments of TP to the public at gauging prices.

If we are talking about #2 - a lot of MEN go at work.

I have yet to hear any woman ever admit they did this at work. I'm sure it happens, but it's probably rare and an emergency event. Out of the women in my life (mom/sisters/girlfriends/wife), my limited sample(eww)...I mean observations(uhhh,...well YOU GET THE IDEA)...tells me they are not lying.

Other than hoarding, #1 for women and #2 for men is the tissue issue here.

I don't think people in this country are using the bathroom any less than they did two months ago. More of them are just doing it at home now.

I'm just surprised the supply chain system can't keep up. Not sure if it's production, truck drivers / delivery, etc. we're not exactly talking about iPhones or Laptops here

Was at BJ's last night, TP completely wiped out.

I see what you did there.

The last two times I was at the Bridgwater Wegmans, they had some TP on the shelves in the evenings. If people just bought a little extra instead of double or triple the normal amount, everyone would get some (and maybe even get their choice of extra clean or extra strong).

This is the video that started it all in the US. The 3 major networks aired it on the morning shows and than it all began. What people failed to listen to was that this video was from Australia.

According to wife number one and confirmed by wife 2...women take ***** and do anything and everything else in public bathrooms and very nasty about it. Mens BR's are much much cleaner than most women public bathrooms by far.

there is no real shortage - its a distribution issue. Demand at store levels has skyrocketed and stores need their supply chains to catch up. And finally - hoarding- You have people buying above what they typically buy which means there is less consumer coverage. The consumer who isn't able to get anything, next time they come across supply - they respond by buying 2 or 3x. Now that stores are finally putting restrictions in place to limit how much can be bought, this should all settle down in 2-3 weeks

Coming straight from a guy that worked over 30 years at MSG, the men's rooms were bad after events. The ladies were a complete disaster. Believe it was more about hovering for #1 though.

Bet those parents who took their kids TPing around Halloween are regretting it now. :Sly:

Thats funny! The guy I gave the case of TP to in upstate NY last winter text me yesterday saying, "I TP all my neighbors trees just to show off"

Anybody remember the Johnny Carson toilet paper incident in the early 70's. During a monologue to start the Tonight Show he made a joke about an upcoming toilet paper shortage. Right after, there was a shortage as people stocked up.

When the zombies attack, no one will be able to eat toilet paper. I get stocking up on Spam, canned goods, meds, water, etc. but if things ever got real bad, folks could just go to their basements for old magazines, tear up the carpet, pull down the wallpaper, use leaves etc.
