You have to realize that nearly all sales go through the under 18 market in 2017. This was different back when star wars was created 40 years ago. In those days the adult crowd was the market and so movies were made for adults. Movies today try to ride the bridge between tweens and teens in order to get both groups. These are the groups that will go to the movie, buy the video games, and get the merch. As a consequence the content has to be "dumbed" down, and the deeper elements removed, especially ones that may be disturbing to younger audiences. If the movie has violence it can sell, but if it talks about issues that require thought parents will think twice, and if kids can't go, parents can't go and the whole family sits it out. So the new formula is over the top CGI graphics, very simple linear story lines, and cheesy one liners that the audience(teens) can memorize, and then get placed into toys and onto merchandise. Movies today sometimes don't even have a completed script and often will just shoot action scenes without a direct placement, and then the director fits the action in where it seems to fit. As long as people go , it will continue this way.
