Why do some smokers feel it is ok to throw their cigarette butts on the ground?

1) is it because it small so it's not noticeable to anyone else?
2) is it because its mostly just paper/tobacco plant and being eco friendly you're just putting nature back in its place?
3) is it ok, because you first set it on fire so it will burn itself up and there won't be anything remaining?
4) is it ok, because you threw it out your car window while going 70mph so when it hits the highway friction will disintegrate it?
5) you just don't give a shat?
6) or something I overlooked?

I have wondered this for a while and I'm not a smoker, so I don't know if this is common acceptable practice or a few bad apples making the majority of the mess out there.

Could someone shed some light on this?

Thanks

When I smoked (over 20+ years ago now,) I never did this and as a smoker never understood why other smokers thought it ok. But to answer your question, I'd say it's a combination of mostly #5, justifying it with #1. After all, if you're smoking you obviously don't give a **** about your own health, so I doubt you give a rats *** about the Earth's or your fellow human beings.

Good question. Never understood this myself. As if all those cigs you flick away on a daily basis don't add up to something.

I'd say zgoru's onto something - smokers clearly aren't the most self-aware or thoughtful among us, so just one more thing they don't think about.

They're hardly alone at being completely thoughtless when it comes to trash, though.

Non smoker but it’s all bio degradable
And before it does that, it's washed out to our streams and oceans and ends up on our beaches. I did a beach sweep in Sandy Hook and it was insane the amount of butts that were gathered.

Absolutely, positively WRONG!

Cigarette butts consist primarily of the filter, which is made of a type of plastic that is not biodegradable.

Actually they are but it could take as long as 10 years depending on the environment. Not condoning it AT ALL though. As someone who is on the beach 3-5 times a week, I can't stand them. Thankfully our town has gone so far as to ban smoking on the beach and boardwalk.

Actually much longer than 10 years. The filters are not biodegradable, but just break down into smaller pieces. Perhaps @RU848789 can shed more light on this particular subject.

This has always bothered me as well. More so when in the city and people are out on their "smoke breaks"...most buildings have one of those thingies for the butts but the smokers all still just fling them to the sidewalk. Then you get their next move, throw in a piece of gum and toss that wrapper to the ground as well.

Funny thing is...any smoker you talk to or ask about this, they never do it themselves...hmmmmmmmmmm

Why is gum all over sidewalks and under restaurant tables? Why do pro baseball players spit so much on TV during close-ups? Why do many people not wash their hands after using bathroom? Why do 110 million Americans have STDs? When you start looking close, you wonder how anyone even wants to sit next to anyone in a stadium lol

And why do they smoke with their car windows open, or hold their cigarette out of the car while driving? I guess they don't like the smell.

Vapers do this too. Would the car windows get fogged up if a vaper vaped with the windows closed?
Sitting next to a vapor at a concert is more annoying than sitting next to a smoker. It's like sitting next to puff the magic dragon.

How about this one- After coming back to my house after New Years Eve dinner, my sister in law sitting in our living room, takes out dental floss and starts flossing while watching tv and talking to us.

I thought it was disgusting, but bit my tongue not to cause a scene or insult her.

I ran the Spring Lake 5 this year and they have a ton of food and drink available for runners after the race. I was sitting on the grass with my family recovering after the race on the main beach blvd when a woman walked by and blatantly threw a plastic bottle into the sewer which in bright letters said "drains to the ocean". I was dumbfounded speechless. If people are so brain dead to do crap like that it's no wonder they would throw cigarette butts wherever they want.

Right up there with clipping your toes in the living room as an ex-roommate did. Disgusting and unbelievable that he was so unaware. Smokers holding their cigarettes away from them at arms length between drags so that it is closer to people who are not smoking than themselves. But it is so cool.

Was at fire training last night at a county fire academy. The instructor reminded us that as a County facility, there was NO smoking allowed any where on the property. He said the designated smoking area was on the yellow line of the highway outside the academy. How refreshing.

It's #5. Most smokers I know just don't give a rat's a$$.

Saw someone clipping their toe nails on a train.

My issue with smokers is why they have to smoke right by entrances, where everyone has to walk pass them and breathe in their smoke.

Smokers get a pretty raw deal. Pay a lot of taxes for the product and can't smoke it in many places.

Smokers ruin everything in public.

Disgusting habit, do it in your own home or car. Not at a beach, park or elsewhere where others want to enjoy fresh air.

By your logic people shouldn't drive their carbon dioxide emitting cars to the beaches or parks. One car is worse for the environment and air pollution than hundreds if not thousands of people smoking tiny, filtered cigarettes .
Lock up all those people that idle their cars to get the AC cranked for their kids ride home.

I wouldn't say that's refreshing. Some one can get hurt or an innocent motorist can be an accident and have his/her life changed forever . Why ? Because you're sending someone out to the middle of the highway to smoke a legal product .

It does annoy me when I see them throwing their cigarette butts out the window. They think they just disappear?

Anyone who smokes is an idiot (or at the very least, have made an idiotic decision).

And I say this because my mom died of lung cancer and was a smoker.

Any time I see people smoking, it kind of pisses me off (especially when parents smoke around their young kids, or when I see parents smoking WITH their teenage children. Those people are really idiots.)

Smokers tossing their trash to the ground sucks. I guess their attitude is "the world is my ashtray".
You beat me in posting this line. I have been saying this for years. After I said it to my mother-in-law and brother-in-law (both smokers) I stopped finding butts outside my house following family gatherings. They both became meticulous about disposing of their garbage properly. I was grateful. Unfortunately, many smokers just don't care, even after being asked or warned not to do it.

I was waiting at a redlight during the summer when a smoker in car next to mine threw the plastic wrapper of his cigarette pack on the road. I told him he shouldn't litter and he answered that it was only a small amount. I think #1 is just an excuse for #5. I have also seen people litter when they are less than 10 feet from a litter basket.

I have seen big piles of cigs buds on sidewalks..with a trash can not that far away. Maybe they didn't want to start a fire? I have no idea.
