RIP great one and game changer.
The Europeans weren’t sure what to think of him at first.

The man transcended his sport,as hundreds of millions of non-soccer fans knew of him.
I remember many of my high school classmates going over to Newark to watch the 1966 World Cup on closed circuit at one of the theatres.

Good name for a soccer star
The name Pelé looks like a bicycle kick on the apostrophe

I'm sure many on this board remember seeing him play in NJ for the Cosmos. His presence here single-handedly raised the profile of soccer in the USA and it continues to grow today, with the US Men's National Team having played in every World Cup since 1990, except for 2018, after having played in none between 1950 and 1990.

His life bio is one for the ages.

R.I.P. great one.

I sure do remember. What a team: Pele, Chinaglia, Beckenbauer, and many more. So interesting that soccer is struggling to gain/maintain a foothold in America, but I was in Giants Stadium when it was SOLD OUT - 76K - for Cosmos games.

Pele's retirement speech at Giants Stadium was truly moving.

Let's face it - he's the Ali, the Jordan, the Gretzky of soccer - RIP to soccer's GOAT.

Why no thread about him?

When we talk about GOATS how come we never mention him ? People compare Ruth, Gretzky, MJ , Thorpe, Nicklaus and others but never Pele.

Is it because soccer isn’t big in the US ? Same for tennis ? But has there ever been a bigger international star?

How does he compare with Gretzky, who I think would be the only other on Pele’s level . Or is someone else even more the GOAT ?

All those you mention, with the possible exception of Thorpe from over a century ago, are associated with professional sports. Virtually non-existent when Pele played (yeah he ended his career with the Cosmos) and nowhere near the platform of those sports today.

His team Santos and the league he played in was a considered a pro league, no?

So because it did not happen in the US a GOAT status cannot be earned/aquired?

On the world stage, sure. The US not really. Soccer has barely reached the stage here where there could be a GOAT.

But Pele is, even though it didn’t happen here (for the most part).

But go back to near the top of this thread, this was in response to the question of why, in comparing GOATs, he's never mentioned like Ruth, MJ, Nicklaus etc.

Maybe not in your bubble, but go anywhere else in the world and they will tell you. The USA is only a fraction of the world population.

Please go back and read the question. My response was perfectly appropriate and had nothing to do with my so called"bubble".

so if a US sport isn't big in other parts of the world, a US GOAT doesn't have GOAT status outside of the USA and just is one of the sheep playing an American sport.
Pele's greatness over shadows the lack of interest Americans have about the sport of soccer, he is the GOAT every place that has heard of the game of soccer

A great man in sense. He will be remembered as the greatest #10 ever. Sadly another 2022 event to remember.
