Also... we'll never be able to compete against low cost mfg countries. Once that ship has sailed, we need to move on to the next thing.
You say this as if it's self-evident. It is not. If we put appropriate tariffs on these goods coming into the United States, the businesses would learn real quick that manufacturing the goods inside of the United States is the cheaper (and still profitable) alternative. We don't have to get our asses kicked by every foreign country in the world in trade policy, we just choose to do so because the politicians are bought and paid for by corporate interests.

If we summarily erase all cheap Chinese goods from the market then Walmart closes its doors the next day and every red state in the country noses into the dirt. So much of the economies of those states - especially in the more rural areas - has become "comp'ny sto'". Walmart is the biggest employer, the highest wage-payer and everyone turns around and gives those wages right back to Walmart. And all of it is built on cheap Chinese crap.

Who bears the cost of the tariffs though? The consumer. And if the goods are then made in the USA? They'll be more expensive than what consumers were paying before the tariffs. The cat is already out of the bag. Unless you're OK with double digit inflation while we retool and start to make cheap goods here again. And who would work in those factories? Unemployment might run down to 3% this year... there ain't anyone to work at these new found jobs.

Great day for US! Chloe Kim was just on her own level. Other top riders competing for silver. Reminds me of Shaun White in his prime.

Gonna have to go back and watch the boarder cross final.

Not into figure skating, but glad to see Chen get gold.

Some beatdowns in hockey this morning. Finland beat Slovakia 6-2, Canada crushed Germany 5-1, and USA overwhelmed China 8-0. China's team was pretty physical, or maybe it just seemed that way against a young American team, but they really lack skill. USA outshot them 55-29.

Next up for Team USA is a showdown with Canada tomorrow (Friday) at 11:10pm Eastern time. This one will most likely determine who finishes 1st in the group and gets a bye to the quarterfinals.

Yeah he sucks, he couldn't play for the US and had no choice but to play somewhere else or not at all. This is not like the Gu situation at all, she had a choice and chose China over the USA.

Gu was at the halfpipe finals yesterday. I noticed Chloe Kim found her in the crowd and gave her a hug after her second run. Said more without words than what a million wannabe patriots yelling and shaking fists at the sky could ever articulate.

I'm not sure what was the bigger error ...that you got the age completely wrong or that you confused Olympic athletes for consequential geopolitical players.

Nope, I am ...it's the second thing.

I thought some said playing for communist China as an American is wrong and unacceptable. Now he had no choice?

When Xi made his games about politics and Putin echoed that sentiment, they all became political pawns.

Um...

In about 15 to 20 years you will be doing exactly that.
Yeah, but well before that I'll hopefully have enough money, where getting up in the morning will be a choice and not an obligation. Once it's a choice, I doubt I'll care about much except Rutgers sports.

Does he have to play in the Olympics? Is he going to be homeless if he didn’t play for China? It’s still money talk, right?

The majority of the host team’s country was not born here. Many of them do not have Chinese ancestry. Yet they wore “China” on the front of their hockey sweaters with pride and talked of growing the sport they are so passionate about.

Of the 22 players who dressed for China in its 8-0 loss to the U.S. at National Indoor Stadium on Thursday, 17 were either born or raised in the United States or Canada. International Ice Hockey Federation bylaws stipulate that a person can represent a country in the Olympics if they’ve lived there for two years and played for the national team.

Who knows? But living in China for two years who knows what stipulations was put on them to play for the national team. You really think they asked nicely? Did they have a choice, I'm sure they did. Was that choice influenced, I'm sure it was.

Olympics is much better when more countries are competitive. Whole thing was and is a non-issue. Seems like even FoxNews stopped caring because the trolls disappeared back underground.

"Again, this struck Smith oddly. He was a native of Dearborn, Michigan, not mainland China. To his knowledge, he did not have any Chinese ancestry. So he wanted to make something clear to his potential new team when responding to the contract offer.

"I told them I can't renounce my U.S. citizenship," said Smith. "They were like, 'Do not worry. We will not ask you. This is not what this whole process is about. It's about getting you qualified for the Olympics.'"

This was, it turns out, no joke: China spent several years trying to avoid being a laughingstock at their own Olympics. They imported players like Smith and former NHL players Brandon Yip, Jake Chelios and Spencer Foo. They hired hockey luminaries like Wayne Gretzky, Phil Esposito and Mike Keenan to lend their program gravitas. They spent countless millions on hockey infrastructure and player development."

Japan has some crazy snowboarding talent, and China showing nice promise, too. Good for the sport and games when there's talent around the world progressing it forward.

Why aren’t Wayne Gretzky and Phil Esposito being tortured on this board for helping China?

No government has an issue with it. Only the far right on this board.
So you have friends in Ottawa and north of the border who can confirm this?

Good for you. I wish I had some Canadian friends too.

And if you’re starting a national hockey program from scratch, why wouldn’t go and try to get the best to help you get going? Good move, China.👍

Good move China, indeed.

Nothing countries, players, coaches and owners around the world haven't been doing for generations.

You don't need to keep trying to justify it. It's OK to admit it's much ado about nothing.
Not justifying anything.

They (the players on the Chinese hockey team) are playing well within the rules China decided on how to do this.

I’m sure different countries, just like we do, have their own rules how they do something like this too.

You aren't going to find many athletes that would turn down a once in a lifetime opportunity to be an Olympian. The American guys on the Chinese team I'm sure would all rather play for the US since that's their true home and every player would rather be on a medal contender than a team that hopes to have one close game, but these guys simply don't have that choice, nor will they ever be close to sniffing the Olympics again in their lifetime. Nobody would turn this down. As I've said before, they are just being asked to play a sport, but a few guys here are acting like they've joined the Chinese military.

And they are playing by the rules China decided to make on who can or can’t play for their national team.

But I bet it’s rather new, this particular decision.

I'm not sure, it might be, but even so it's not really fair but I don't mind that much because it's only to save them from being completely humiliated. It would be a miracle if they play a game that isn't a blowout. With the way the groups were sorted based on the rankings, their weakest opponent is Germany, who was seconds away from winning gold in 2018. The IIHF was actually considering preventing them from participating because of how lopsided their games were expected to be. IIHF president Luc Tardif even said in October, "Watching a team being beaten 15-0 is not good for anyone, not for China, or for ice hockey." The NHL backing out was the best thing that could have happened to them. Their team is dead last in the KHL by a pretty wide margin, imagine if their games against USA and Canada featured guys like McDavid, Crosby, Matthews, etc. They lost 8-0 and gave up 55 shots today to what is not even a USA JV team. Who it sucks for is Norway, who I believe would have been the next team in if it wasn't for the host automatically qualifying. They surely would have put forth a better showing than China, even with their loose interpretation of who is a Chinese player.
