So if a dual national revoked their US citizenship - in this case to compete for China - do they need a visa to re-enter the country despite an address in the US as their legally recognized place of residence?
I'm pretty sure if you have dual citizenship, you don't need to revoke one in order to participate in international sports. You remain a citizen of both countries.

What??? You don't have to "revoke" your citizenship to represent another country. Where did you get that crap?

Have not been watching, not due to any issue with China, because me watching has no effect on them as a country or anything else. Just have not been able to get into it yet. I normally love the Olympics, but maybe this weekend.

Yeah revoke wasn’t the right word - relinquish…

More a general question.
They don't have to relinquish it either. Nothing changes by representing another country. Nothing. It doesn't involve your citizenship in any way. The Federal Government isn't involved at all. Its like an actor playing a role of a person from another country.

The post I was referencing was Aileen Gu the ski aerial competition. Her mom was born in China . But she is paid by the CCP. Sorry I’m in favor of competing for the country of your birth evidently some don’t feel that ‘s appropriate in our new global society.

I was referring to the IOC, not Gu.

That depends on the 2nd country. A lot of countries don't recognize dual citizenship. In this case, from the Chinese perspective, representing China required her to renounce her U.S. citizenship.

Beijing was a **** choice for winter, but there hasn't been decent snow for an Olympics for over a decade. Man-made snow is part of the game, and will continue to be, increasingly so.

They should just host it at one or two venues per continent with the best chance of snow -SLC, Japan, Switzerland/Norway, Vancouver or Calgary, done.
agree. Beijing should have never hosted. Pyongchang should not have either.

you have a good list and i like the idea.

IOC is corrupt. when people can be bought, problems start. olympic events that involve judging are the worst. short track was unwatchable.

There are Canadians playing for the Chinese team that there only connection is that they live in China for 2 years and have been playing on a Chinese professional hockey . Citizenship isn’t a requirement it seems.

I respect this in spirit, and above all, respect you being cordial.

I love the olympics, and thoroughly enjoy it.

But if this was the 1936 or 1940 Olympics games in Germany, should we have been watching? Knowing that media dollars and our complicity would be supporting the Nazis?

I’d like to think if I was in that time period, I wouldn’t watch. Just my opinion.

NBC/Comcast/Universal has an immense amount of power in that complicity. Their news coverage has always been soft on CCP atrocities, and why? Because they have overwhelming business relationships in China.

If NBC’s ratings are crap, then maybe, just maybe other networks think twice about bidding on a dictator’s coronation gathering.

Most importantly, the CCP is not hosting the olympics out of the goodness of their hearts. It is to legitimize their empire, to join hands with Putin in a big public display against the West, and to pony out a poor uighur in the opening ceremony so idiots across the world buy the propaganda.

I want to believe in grand, beautiful vision of the world joining hands and celebrating our athletes. But it’s pretty hard when our very own athletes are being spied on through their phones, ridiculed on state-sponsored social media platforms, fed like dogs, and being used as propaganda pieces.

NPR had a little write-up worth a look, and this only scratches the surface from what’s been reported from eyewitnesses:

Yes we all should have been watching Jesse Owens winning Gold Medals in multiple events over Germans . It was great moment for the free world. A defining moment in Olympic history.

Interesting only a week before the Super Bowl, the only threads that appear to be important are about NFL racism and about Eileen Gu, Olympic skier, whether she’s a traitor?

Has Trump affected the way this country thinks? There isn’t even a Super Bowl thread on the board.

You do realize that the Nazis used the olympics in-part to launch World War 2, right? The fervent, rabid nationalism among the Nazis was stoked during olympics.

Much in the same way Xi is doing it now…

Time to learn some history buddy

I think so many of you need to take a visit to the r/Sino sub on reddit. You need to see just how much vile hatred is directed at our country, its people, everything we stand for — all openly on an American social media site:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Sino/

But it’s not shocking, when you know CCP bought significant ownership of reddit

The fervent, rabid nationalism began well before '36. The Olympics were a minor part, made more minor by Jesse Owens.

He won’t understand about that part of history. Some are very accepting of the CCP and their intents. The scary part is how many governments foreign and perhaps domestic have monetary ties to them . We see it everyday and it is blatantly flagrant in scope. Buying up land, real estate arbitrarily is ok in the USA by foreign nationals. Try and buy the same someplace else on the globe. Not so easy is it?

Trump, trump, trump, trump

Jesus christ, is this all you guys think about. He’s been out of office for a year. Not even on social media.

CCP threat is so far beyond partisanship. It’s a threat to the free world, and everything we hold dear.

I say this as a liberal!

Stop chasing the shiny object, with semantic shaming. And such rudimentary tribalist politics.

China has now officially aligned with Russia, North Korea, Iran, Argentina, and the Taliban — and you guys still want to hark on orange man bad.

And frankly, this is what they want. Sun Tzu’s Art of the War 101. Keep us divided. Keep us feuding between us, while they circumvent power without ever firing a bullet.

Hate Trump all you want, but don’t be naive to the greatest threat in the world

Not a bad idea. This way countries would not have to keep building new arenas, stadiums, etc. What about Lake Placid?
think they hosted twice already. '32 and '80 i think.
but in order to host again, they would need a massive investment. the games have gotten so much bigger nowadays compared to 1980. don't think neither LP nor the new york state can't afford it alone. now, the new york state has what is called ORDA, which includes whiteface, gore and belleayre. it has been upgrading a lot over the last few years. maybe they have a goal of hosting again.

i did hear a few years ago that there was a discussion between ORDA and Quebec trying to host together. not sure if there is any truth to that. LP is a much better location than Beijing or Pyongchang for sure.

And are you really going to try and argue that the ‘36 and ‘40 olympics didn’t help solidify German nationalism and put Hitler into the spotlight?

oh-please

Yes that is true as it was already happening around ‘36 but this is very similar. It is nothing more than a propaganda machine and it’s been accepted once again by US invested companies , Big Tech and especially sports figures such as the NBA and NFL players associations. Most sane people see the potential problems. By the way Russia will get bit in the *** eventually by the CCP it is how they have always done business.

You really do have your head in the sand. China has been ramping up as a threat to the world for well over a decade, whether it be the Belt and Road Initiative, creating islands in the South China Sea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or their horrible human rights record. Yet you continue to pound the drum about DT. As for the racism aspect, and the NFL, the far left has injected racism into practically every discussion on every topic in this country. But hey, continue to divert all you want.

The thinking of some shows how near sighted people in the USA are and that is being fueled by the propaganda news machine.Still lamenting the “Orange Man” shows who the cultists really are.

Guys can you take the politics to the CE board ? Some of us actually are interested in the events.
This is the LEAD-IN to the OP and you expect the discussion NOT to include geo-political factors ?

Olympics Opening Ceremony draws record-low ratings: Why aren't Americans tuning in?

If that's the case then the OP should have been positioned as an events only topic.

Did you protest back when Beijing got the bid?

Kinda late now. I'll support our athletes by watching them do what they do.

I'll save statements for venues in which people will actually read them.
"The Protest" is about helping to drive down viewership which apparently appears to be having an effect. Obviously I'm not the only one doing so. THAT'S the venue "dude". :)

I know, right? Pretty funny.

I cannot imagine going through life so pissed off all the time. It’s like a hate contest. Whoever hates the most stuff, people, countries, whatever, wins. LOL
They are funny. They are just giving themselves high blood pressure and ulcers like any of their comments are affecting change. Who let them out of the CE board?

By the way, I haven’t watched a minute of the Olympic but now you guys are getting me interested in it. I didn’t think anyone cared if I watched it.

I get that, but do you really think that's changing a thing? China will still China, and IOC will still award bids how it awards bids.

This Olympics will be written off for many reasons.
