Too each his own. Another explanation of a tactical foul is stopping the player who is advancing, holding him back to stop the attack, happens all the time.

Kane is far from a flopper, look at Suarez, Costa and others for that. Kane plays the game the right way, doesn’t flop doesn’t complain. He is a professional footballer.
As I said earlier Suarez is very talented but pathetic in all his antics. Neymar too the other day after his foot "crushed by a vice" lol. I don't like any of it, those kind of things are the worst.

I don't watch the EPL much and never seen Kane play until now so my opinion is taken with tons of salt but just feel like some are pathetic like Suarez and others like him. Some take it to a higher art form and do it in a way that's not as obvious. I don't like either method. That's how my eyes see it at least, but again they are somewhat uninformed eyes.

If it's hard contact and a foul sure call it but if you're just looking to make something that wasn't really hard contact look more like it was then eh not a fan...and that's what I feel happens sometimes. Put aside the dramatic idiots that are so obvious.

And two other reasons:
  • The 2014 Brazil World Cup had matches in prime time in the US. This one does not.
  • The ratings include only TV and not digital streaming, which is more prevalent now than in 2014.
Whatever makes you guys feel better about the fact that the vast majority of Americans don't care about soccer and never will.

Euro bias ? It’s called one team acted like jerks all game long and lost their cool on the biggest stage. No bias we call it like we see it . Why is there always someone calling bias etc when bad b3havior gets criticized?

Except many of you are not? England was just as “dirty”. Yes the colombian team lost their cool, but if it was the other way around and england were down 1-0 on a penalty that should have been at the very least reviewd (kane fouled the player beforehand) they would have been in the referees face as well.

Look, its not like henderson got zidane’d it was a graze but yes it fully deserved a yellow. However going studs up on a players ankle is oftentimes a red card and yet they didnt even call a regular foul for it. There was a play where the colombian was on the ground and got cleated in the head and yet nothing was called? Thats where I think the bias is, no one else is bringing those situations up (they play a factor in the colombians reaction to the referee)

Ultimately nerither team was more deserving than the other, but it was a crappy match.I think the ref is to blame, he lost complete control of the game. If he would have at least reviewed the penalty, that would have relieved some of the tension from the game regardless of whether or not he changed the call.

FiveThirtyEight.com projections to win WC:

Brazil 30%
France 15%
England 15%
Croatia 12%
Belgium 11%
Uruguay 6%
Sweden 6%
Russia 5%

62% chance that the winner will come from the left side of the bracket.
If not for the side of the bracket they're on I'd think France/Belgium would have a higher shot than England. Also think Croatia has much of a shot as England. Such small percentage differences though.

Out of the teams left I'm rooting for Belgium and then probably France after that.

who said it did? Of course it is growing in this country with the increased diversity and the fear of American football injuries. I coached both boys and girls teams for 11 years. NO EXPERT and do like the game....just don't like the grown men acting like pu$$ies.
There are clearly GREAT matches that don't involve such unsportsmanlike antics.
I agree with you on the puss factor, but I think that Americans who don’t like the game use that as a crutch to criticize it.

Your statement is patently untrue. Soccer is the #1 youth participant sport in the US.

But even if it were true, I really don't give a flying ****. I like soccer, and do not require the validation of others.

Henderson and maguire participated in the same antics..it went both ways. Stop with the biases. This game was even and either winner would have been deserved.

Sorry but Colombia was 10x worse. I’m AMAZED he didn’t red card the one POS who got in his face.

TV viewership in 2018 World Cup matches is up 1% when compared to 2010 World Cup matches not involving the US. Funny how selective certain outlets are being when cherry-picking their numbers for ratings.

Not that surprising actually #fakenewsoutlets

Did you not see maguire blatanly dive to win a pen? No one metions falcao got cleated in the head? Ashley young had a 50/50 challenge on the ball where he went studs up and caught the colombian player’s ankle and it somehow ended up as a foul in favor for england? The ref was horrid, the colombians did not keep composure thats true but they were hard done by the ref so their frustration was understandable.
Of course some calls were missed that favored England. Lingard and Maguire showed bad form trying to fool the ref but overall Colombia played a dirty style from the get go which the ref allowed. You wont see that crap from Sweden, that is for sure.

Like I said , I watched every match and the Colombian team displayed the worst of the behaviors . Say what you want about if the roles were reversed blah blah but I’m dealing in reality .

Sure, there were a few missed calls both ways, but IMO you clearly aren't seeing what most people saw, which was a Colombian side that was playing very rough and fouling more than the English side was (which is why it ended 23-13 in fouls). The refs first mistake was not tossing out a few yellows to stop that nonsense early on and as many have said, including Mark Clattenburg, one of the best refs ever, Barrios should've gotten a red card for the head butt on Henderson.

https://www.express.co.uk/videos/545178/World-Cup-Clattenburg-SLAMS-referee-for-Henderson-headbutt

In addition, when he called the PK - which was in no way, shape or form a controversial call, as Kane was absolutely mugged - and the Colombians were all over him and in his face, he should've yellow-carded every one of them. This kind of behavior is abhorrent and needs to be stopped and that's the only way to do it. Good article on this...

When there's a match at any level--even youth level-- when the match is physical on one or both sides, it is difficult for any referee to look good. One side will argue that no foul should have been called while the other is arguing for a red or yellow card. As a result, spectators with or without a rooting interest will claim that control of the match was lost. It isn't NBA basketball where a double foul can be issued. Soccer has legal contact, but it all depends on your rooting interest as to whether to "let them play" or call everything a foul.

There are different ways of controlling a game depending on the level of play. I do youth soccer games and in some I will allow a certain amount of physicality. In others, I'll call it close for the first 5-10 minutes of a half (just calling fouls, not necessarily with cards) which can prevent escalation of the battle.

In the case of England-Colombia a certain amount was tolerated, albeit with verbal warnings. Talking tot he players usually (but not always) helps. When Colombia ramped up their chippiness following the England goal, it took a series of yellow cards, but the game calmed down to being about soccer, not a brawl. That is to the credit of the referee. The rest of the world is so much more passionate about the game that in the US that the arguing and complaining to the refs will never stop. Cards are typically only issued for dissent when certain language is used or the bitching goes on in spite of warnings.

That being said, what I'd like to see a the professional level, would be more yellow cards issued for embellishment of injuries, such as Suarez when he grabbed his head and rolled aorund on the ground in agony when he got nudged in the back. It is hard to do that to Neymar, since his leg was stepped on, but as much as he overplayed it, you cant really tell how much (if at all) he was hurt.

The other beef I have is that kids--especially boys--often mimic the gestures and negastive behaviors of those they see on TV.

Agree completely. Kane is England's only elite player and the Colombians couldn't stop themselves from fouling him. He used it to his advantage. All of the fouls called on him looked legit. He's the kind of player you want to win, especially compared to guys like Suarez or Neymar. You want to see flopping, go look up some vids on those two.

not me. I'd change a few things/rules (just like NCAA LAX) but that's not my call. I have a few ideas for the "American International Football League"...but the international soccer players are super fun to watch when playing and not acting.

Came across this article with a couple videos making fun of Neymar. Thought they were funny.

I re-watched the match, McGwire's dive in the box was interesting. He anticipated the contact that did not come and went down, but he popped right back up and shook his fingers to the ref like he was saying there was nothing there, no foul, no penalty. I give him credit for that, he didn't roll around trying to sell it and instantly admitted nothing there.

The Stones cleats to the face Falcao I think was inadvertent but probably deserved a yellow card.

Several Colombian players also dived, Falcao was one of them. It was a very hard match to ref, I thought the ref did a bad job especially early. He should have called Kane and Falcao over as the captains and said enough is enough, anyone who gets in my face is booked, period.

Its the world cup and no one wants to see someone sent off, but the ref has to take command. I doubt he refs another match in the world cup.

For the Colombia players, it can be a matter of life or death back home. Soccer drives me crazy because penalty kicks are like 75%-80% goals and while the Colombia foul on Kane probably had to be called, the punishment didn’t fit the crime.

Uruguay France very physical game so far. France sloppy early. Uruguay very hard tackles, hope this ref doesn’t let this one get away. IMO he should have gave a yellow to Uruguay on early very late tackle.

Lalas made it sound like the rebound off that great save by Lloris should've been put in the net. I don't know about that. Lloris did a nice job of getting right back up and was in place to save that one too had it been directed better.

I liked Mbappe too, that was pathetic. Worthy of Suarez/Neymar. I liked rooting for him but this was just ridiculous. I'm rooting for France and I say give him a card, I'd even give a red for such BS. They should retroactively suspend such crap if not within game itself. Wasting time etc.. and the time wasted never gets equated with the amount of extra time put on.

Good win for France. Felt bad for Gimenez on Uruguay he was getting emotional already with about 5-7 minutes left in regulation. Of course it didn't get any better after the game.

You really don’t like Suarez lol... The announcers at the beginning of the game today actually talked about how Suarez hadn’t really been up to his usual antics. I’m pretty sure today he didn’t flop a single time. Nobody came close to the **** Neymar has pulled.

Not a fan since his biting incidents. The melodramatic crap just compounds it.

Disappointed by the crap Mbappe pulled today. Never heard of him since I don't watch the Euro leagues much but was liking his play in the times I was able to see him in this World Cup. But the absolute garbage he pulled today was very disappointing. I hope it's not a regular thing with him. For it to come up at all makes me wonder if it's part of the persona of the player. Does crap like that happen as a one time thing? You either don't think of pulling such crap or you likely have done it more than once.

Red card that stuff or retroactively suspend games, that'll get rid of that nonsense real quick.

I found that rolling meme pretty funny.
