Bruce to DL as predicted by SNY. Tim Peterson recalled. Back to a 13 man staff and a four man bench. Mets have exactly three healthy outfielders on their 25 man roster, with one of them being Jose Bautista. What's worse, that's all they have on the 40 man roster as well.
That's still a better ratio than my guy Hansel, who's given up 6 in 18. Of course Vargas isn't done yet though.
Hopefully this outing is the final straw and Vargas is DFA’d. But this is the Wilcon’s, so he will probably start again tomorrow.

I give Mets management credit for bringing up an extra bullpen arm when Vargas is pitching.
AND ROBLES PUTS OUT THE FIRE!! The kind of clutch pitching performance we've come to expect from Hansel in these high-leverage situations. Mets high-powered offense still very much in the game, down only six.

What was the impetus for picking up Vargas? Career ERA over 4. One stint with the Mets in 2007 with a 12.19 ERA. For most sane owners/managers, that would be a hard pass.
NY Post writer nailed it in his opening paragraph, except it is very offensive to the Hindenburg. Vargas is a much bigger disaster.

I think they spent about $30 million on Vargas, Ramos, and Bruce. The most inept organization in baseball. These are dumpster-dive guys at this point.

The excuse was wanting a lefty starter because of the uncertainty over Matz's injuries, even though you still have Lugo and Gsellman who are more than capable starters. They lucked out with Gsellman may becoming a better closer than Familia but they keep screwing Lugo over this goof as Callaway keeps hinting that he'll go back to the pen when Syndergaard comes back.
$30 million/year is about right
Vargas deal was $16 (maybe 16.5) million over two years. That is insane.
Ramos got a 1 year deal at $9.225 million. That is also insane. Neither of these guys was worth more than $2-3 million, $ 5 million max per year.
Bruce gets $10 million this year and $13 million in 2019 and 2020.
Bruce would be worth it if he hit to his standard of 25-30 plus HRs, 90 plus RBI and at least a .250 average. But he has been awful this year both at the plate and in the field. Maybe he will recover--if the Mets trade him.
Cespedes is a huge albatross. $29 million this year and the next 2 years.
That's $60 million/year for a whole lot of injuries and bad production.
LOL. He won’t need to put the ball beween his legs since it will already be there.
Might be better off with an extra infielder and CF can pick up any ball hit to left after it stops rolling.

It is with deep sadness that I pass along the news that Hansel Robles has been optioned to Vegas. Chris Flexen returns.

I officially give up on this season. These are paid professional athletes who don't deserve any of my money.

On the negative side, uncharacteristically bad performances by Lugo and Gsellman. Mets really needed Hansel Robles from the pen last night. Or Vargas.

TBH, Lugo and Gsellman were due bad day, although they cant afford them. It's like they're the ones who are made examples of by Callaway after bad days when Vargas, Robles, Reyes, etc keeps getting pass after pass. And maybe I misread this somewhere but I thought Gsellman was getting a shot at closer, yet he comes in early. Lugo should be the 3rd-5th starter when Syndergaard comes back but the staff will keep honeydicking Vargas (who sucks), Matz and Wheeler (although these two have better well last few starts).
Can Callaway stop dicking around Gzellman already? Kid never knows what inning he's gonna be used in .Pencil him in the 8th or 9th, and be done with it,preferably the 9th.
Or put him in as a starter. I trust him more than Matz and Wheeler (who always throw 100 in 5 innings).
Matz is respectable this year...he is far from any problem we have.

I'm with rubaseball on this one. For over 20 years relief pitchers have been pigeonholed into roles. You had your 7th inning guy, your 8th inning guy, and your closer. Heaven forbid you use a guy outside his assigned role. How could you expect him to be ready?

+Ask most relief pitchers and they will tell you they want to know their role. A lot of closer's don't even want to come into a game that's tied or behind in. In most cases, they have bad outings.
True. And IMHO it's high time they got over it.
I was a pitcher. If you want to say you need to know whether your starting or relieving, I agree. If someone tells you they need to know if I’m 7th inning guy or 8th inning guy to be successful that’s a load of bull.
