The Arkansas Razorbacks are hosting the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the NCAA baseball regionals this coming Friday.

I have no idea about NJIT, can anyone share some information?

Arkansas won the SEC regular season and the SEC tournament this year. We were ranked #1 in the country for most of the season, so I gotta think we should be able to handle NJIT, BUT, you never know on any given day!

See what I added above. They are on quite a run. They beat Maine in the finals, previously they had lost to them by like 10 runs

The Highlanders must have won their conference title, which I think is the America East. Go NJ Tech!

Arkansas pulled it out against Tennessee in the SEC championship yesterday.

Ha, no not even close. I saw it flash across the screen on the espn ticker last night so only caught a quick glance and thought I'd read it as 3-2. My bad. Nice job by the Razorbacks to dispatch the Vols.

HUH? They're the biggest pieces of sh*t on the face of the earth. They tired to tarnish a man's reputation because they didn't want him as a coach.

SG, the NJIT Campus is about 50 feet from the Rutgers campus in Newark. There has been talk of merging the two universities, but nothing has progressed so far. Only in New Jersey would we have two public universities across the street from each other wasting untold millions in duplicate staff and resources. I still think there will be a merger in the future, but we are just finishing the largest merger in American university. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ and Rutgers merged. That one was even crazier where UMDNJ buildings were on the Rutgers campus and some buildings were even shared, but the schools were separate . Only in New Jersey lol.

Technical university, underrated at that, can rationally be separate from a more general one.

In Arkadelphia Arkansas, Henderson State University is across the street from Ouachita Baptist University. Both are Division 2 schools. The visiting team just walks across the street to play their rival in all sports!

Students at both RU-N and NJIT can take courses at both institutions. When I was at RU-N there was a lot of institutional cooperation.

When NJIT was D3 they were in the same conf as RU-N. Their teams took a bus because the sports facilities were on the far ends of the campuses.

I actually played baseball at NJIT.

I played there when they didn't have a ballfield anywhere near campus in Newark. My home field was actually Smith Field in Parsippany.

NJIT used to be called NJ Tech but they stopped using that moniker around 1990.

When I was there we were playing teams like Stevens Tech, Drew University, Stony Brook, East Stroudsburg, Wilkes Barre (I hit my only home run against them) . One year we played a Rutgers Cook club team who was trying to get a D3 team going. That was actually one of my best games in college with a bunch of hits and RBIs.

2008 - 2013 they played in something called the "Great West Conference" which should have been called the "Great Frankenstein Conference"



GWC almost made the AAC seem rational...

but, congrats to njit for getting there!

Congratulations to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders!

i want to welcome you and your fans to Fayetteville Arkansas this week. you will be playing in front of a crowd of 13,000+
at Baum-Walker stadium. The fans will be “calling the Hogs” many times, it is our signature tradition and might wear on you a bit, but we will be doing it after every home run anyway.

I hope that you have a great experience and enjoy the friendly fans And beautiful facilities. Still, I want the Hogs to win it all!

For all SEC teams.. they were my favorite once upon a time.. because how that stadium looked and sounded with TV games from there... but, yeah, the fans are asshats to allow something like this to happen.. and worse.. to support it because they thought they were "better" than a former Rutgers coach. They cannot suffer long enough in my book.

Anyone know why they are nicknamed the Highlanders? I don't recall Newark having any elevation. I also didn't think they were settled by the Scots so I'm at a loss.

HISTORY
The Beginning…

On May 26, 1949, a vote was made at the Newark College of Engineering (NCE). The school paper was called "The Technician", and the NJIT campus we know today was a distant dream. There were only 700 students at NCE, and 333 of those students voted for naming the athletics teams. They chose THE HIGHLANDERS, a name created by Robert Skettini. Other possible names included the "WESTONIANS", the "RED DEVILS", and the "RED ROCKETS". This was chosen because NCE was located on the Highlands of Newark, where 19th and 20th centuries homes on High Street looked east upon the rivers and watched as boats came in from all over the world.

The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles). In 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the franchise after it ceased operations and moved it to New York City, renaming the club the New York Highlanders.[3] The Highlanders were officially renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.[3]

I know they have some majors where classes are shared. One of them is called something like Theater Technical Management it something like that. Here is one most people don’t know, but Florida State and Florida A&M share a School of Engineering.

Florida State was originally the Florida College for Women or something like that.

Elite? Has anyone told NJIT, lol

It's a stronger school than some give it credit for but Rutgers Engineering and Rutgers' STEM programs are generally considered more prestigious than NJIT's (a few individual departments may be on par or otherwise), with the exception of architecture which Rutgers does not offer a program in.

And I believe it also has a legacy of being the state normal school (a la Trenton State Coll --> CNJ) for Florida so it has roots as a teacher's college. Maybe down there only women were supposed to be teachers, ha.
