For those wondering what that round building is, that is The Golden Dome which houses basketball, volleyball, and swimming.

The Rutgers-Newark baseball team played on campus years ago, but I think that is only used for soccer now with AstroTurf. The Scarlet Raiders now play at Weequahic Park, which also has AstroTurf. Wonder why NJIT and Rutgers don’t work their schedules out so both teams can play there. Same driving distance for both schools.

If typical city and county politicians weren’t so greedy on a project that already failed at that site, NJIT and Rutgers Newark could’ve had one of the best D1 and D3 stadiums in the northeast, if not the country. They’re doing the same thing with Campbells Field in Camden, which they’re turning it into an office complex and a HS style baseball field and a track with no stands for Rutgers Camden.

Was in the stands when the RU-N volleyball team took on UCLA (who had about half of the '84 gold medal Olympic team) back in the winter of '83.

I recall.. maybe 1971.. after we moved down the *****.. you know.. white flight.. took a bus trip back north to stay with childhood friend.. I was maybe 11.. it was winter.. on the way back bus goes through newark and there had been a fire the night prior.. it was a burnt-out ice palace.. it was cool and scary at the same time. Then I thought of the firefighters who were out in that cold and wet and fire and smoke and made it. The whole block looked burned down iirc.

While it’s happening it doesn’t matter what’s going on…heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.

It’s after the fact when it starts to take the toll on you. And the older you get…

Hats off to all you guys (and gals) who do a difficult and dangerous job that I personally would never want to tackle.

New name, same location - and much nicer. I think it was just called Alumni Field when I worked in Newark. Both baseball and softball played there then in the 90’s.
I played softball for Kean in the early 90s, and thought we played on Rutgers-Newark campus. I remember more when we played Rutgers-Camden. Now THAT field was in a bad area. Also attended UMDNJ in the early 90s. Never had any problems, although the faculty did tell us to call security to escort us to our car if we were going to be staying late.

26+ years, mostly in charge, and I still get a little scared when the tones go off.

But have to admit it’s a rush that really can’t be duplicated anywhere else. Especially when you KNOW you’re going to work (really a fire and not just a call).

Attended NJIT in the mid 80’s before transferring to RU. Took the subway from Newark’s Penn Station. Really sketchy to walk from Penn Station but subway was frightening too. Eventually bought a beater of a car which of course broke down in really bad areas. This was before cell phones - don’t know how I didn’t get mugged.
I worked on Raymond Blvd and Halsey St in the 80’s. That area was not bad at all

And the subway was fine

It’s probably too small for college baseball. But Newark East Side’s home field, Riverbank Park on Raymond Blvd in Ironbound would be a better spot. It has a concrete stands that’s covered and it’s closer to Rutgers Newark and NJIT

NJIT plays Nebraska today and the winner moves forward to play Arkansas for the regional final game.

Evidently Hog fans have turned into NJIT fans this weekend. Reports coming out of Fayetteville are saying that the Hog fans gave NJIT a standing ovation last night at the NJIT team dinner, fans are showing off their NJIT T shirts, and NJIT family and fans are loving on some old fashioned Southern hospitality from Razorback fans.

A good time is being had by all it seems!

GREAT TO HEAR!!! A hell of a lot more than what this state has given them, considering how much publicity they get here: NONE. Glad to see your Hogs are giving them props!

I think the Newark Star-Ledger, in the same city as NJIT, had a grand total of one article. They should have had at least three articles a day for at least four days. As far as TV coverage... oh that’s right, the FCC is a joke and a State with NINE million people doesnt have any TV stations !!!

They treat them the same way the city of Newark treats them. Only around when they do something extraordinary (unfortunately NCAA Playoff Baseball don’t count in their eyes).

None of the Fayetteville regional games are available on TV EXCEPT by streaming them. Whereas several other regionals are easily available on cable.

Once again, New Jersey and Arkansas gets the screw.

SG, I didn’t mean the actual games on TV—just TV coverage in general. I don’t even know if you can calculate not having any TV stations in our state hurts our economy and Rutgers in many ways. So many aspects of our state that people are never exposed to. It is devastating to our recruiting of general students, as well as student-athletes from New Jersey. Imagine the entire population of Arkansas never hearing about anything in the whole state. All of your state residents would only get TV stations from Oklahoma or Tennessee. Makes it a lot harder to have the youngsters grow up following and supporting their own State University and teams.

NJ doesn’t have a TV station?

Damn, seriously damn. And from what I have garnered, NJ doesn’t have much of a newspaper either.

I feel sorry for y’all.

We had a Public TV system that cost the state government about $4.73 a year to run and then some politicians decided it would make them look good if they were “trimming the state budget”. It was pretty good in the 70s and 80s, but became fairly bad and now one of the state colleges has it and they have a half hour of news a day that looks like something a high school would put out. We have some media company that produces a half hour of news that they show on a loop for about 8 hours. You can only get it on some cable companies in a handful of counties. We have a TV station that was in New York City, was going to have their license taken by the FCC and told them they would cover New Jersey if they could keep their license. So they built a building in Secaucus which is about four miles from NYC and didn’t change a darn thing. In Atlantic City, there is an NBC affiliate that is available to about 861 people because the Philadelphia NBC station want to get all the money from Southern New Jersey residents. So, NINE million people basically left with nothing. Only other state that doesn’t have TV is Delaware.

You mean the Audabato Channel? Otherwise known as WNJM.

We found our bats yesterday!
NC State used 7 different pitchers I believe. We used 3 and none were named Kopps.
today might be a different story of course. But, the winner of game 1 of the Super Regionals has advanced to the CWS 80% of the time. So I like our chances at this point.

Tickets are going for up to $900 to get into Baum - Walker Stadium! It is full with11,000 fans each day and could easily, if it had the capacity, take 20,000. Amazing for college baseball isn’t it?

Go Hogs! WPS!

For fans, college baseball is a different world in the South than the Northeast.

College baseball in the North needs to start May 1. Playing in late February, March, and April is a joke.
