BTW- I sort of wish Rogers did a big ole jump on Yan when he walked it off. I can't stand Yan's antics out there. And he isn't really all that good.

Interesting late in the season...2 players, one talked about for MVP and the other- no one wants

Player 1 - runs -84 HR -30 RBI - 80 SB -8 - MVP candidate Salary -2x player 2
Player 2 - runs - 79 HR - 30 RBI - 85 SB - 5 - much better defensive player

Player 2 is obviously Pete Alonso, because why else would you be posting this?

Player 1 I assume is Shohei Ohtani. If pitching counts as defense (run prevention?) then he is the far better defensive player. He is also far better in OPS, a stat which you chose to exclude.

C'mon man, let it go. Why do you say Pete Alonso is a player no one wants? I don't know a single Met fan who would not have been fine with giving Alonso three years. Orioles gave him five and he took it. Good for him. Time will tell who made the right decision.

In the post game yesterday, Green said that they have spoken to Yan about not celebrating until the umpire raises his right hand. That was about it.

I suspect that the Mets attitude is:
* If Yan turns out to be good, then we don't want to suppress the personality traits that have helped make him good. Maybe we'll ask him to tone it down a bit at some point.
* If he doesn't turn out to be good, then we'll DFA him and he'll be somebody else's concern. Or maybe he won't.

Either way, the Mets aren't terribly concerned. Nor am I.

both players are two way- one hits and plays defense and the other hits and pitches...and one makes 2x the other...

I'm not saying that Pete is better than Ohtani but just showing how even with almost identical stats for this year- one is a MVP candidate and the other is figured to be almost washed up.

And my gut tells me that Ohtani's contract ages much worse.

Have never seen anyone care so much about a dude who is no longer on the team. I couldn't care less what he's doing for a team that will play the same amount of post-season games as us. ZERO!

This is what fans have done for a long time- Quite honestly though, it is more a continued dislike of Stearns even more than the loss of a single player.

But he has been on a bit of tear at the plate, no?
He has...but everything this off season was for run prevention, remember. lol

Though, the shame of him being on a tear- it may now have him on pace for 18HR, 80 RBI and .270 at $40+ mil. And he is a DH forced to play the field. I actually like him- but I would like him at $20 mil per year much better.

Every comment from me circles back to Stearns. Somehow Stearns has a way of f*cking things up. And before anyone says he has some good pickups, a broken clock is right twice a day. Even Stearns can't screw up everything.
He made some good pickups for our minor league system because he F-ed up this season and last season so much. At the AS break- he traded every single pitcher that was good. If he didn't screw the team up so much- we would be on the way to the playoffs and not trading these guys to build the minor league system

Dude didn't even save the team money- he paid to get rid of Nimmo and McNeil - both having solid seasons and paid even more to bring in Robert and Semien. He says that Pete is not a good investment but dropped stupid money on Bichette and even wanted to spend more on a worse player than Bo. Brought in a guy to replace Pete to play maybe 20 games and play them historically bad...

And since Benge and maybe Ewing are working out- the Stearns "give him to June for his plan to work out" guys are back kneeling down to him.

Nobody is "kneeling down to him." Far from it.

But let's be real. Win some, lose some. And this is not in defense of Stearns.
Diaz- win
Pete-loss

McNeil and Nimmo do not appear to be great losses.

Bo, at least at the plate, appears to be settling in-August has been fairly solid. Are his 2026 overall stats and performance worth the money-absolutely not. Time will tell if his contract was worth it.

Semien? Looking like a loss.

Robert? Incomplete.

Diaz- win - agree but you wonder, does he get hurt if he stayed?
Pete-loss - Huge in so many ways

McNeil and Nimmo do not appear to be great losses. Except- we are still paying a ton of money for both of them. And with Nimmo- the trade itself was horrendous. We would have done much better if he was either helping us into the playoffs or moved at the trade deadline for prospects. BTW- he is the Rangers top hitter...McNeil has actually been pretty productive as well.

Bo, at least at the plate, appears to be settling in-August has been fairly solid. Are his 2026 overall stats and performance worth the money-absolutely not. Time will tell if his contract was worth it. - there is zero chance he can find a way to be worth $40 Mil per.

Semien- of course a loss but it gets worse because we are not only paying his crazy contract but a good portion of Nimmo's...

There really is no way to justify anything Stearns did in the off season except that hope that Diaz would have been just as bad and injured if he stayed - and good thing we are paying big bucks to his replacement. lol

This is not pointed at you, and please don't take it this way. Imagine this as two people at a bar having a friendly debate.

First, who the flock cares about the money being paid? Isn't that Cohen's problem? As a fan, who is not nearly as "invested" in the details of contracts and trades, I couldn't care less about such details, unless I am missing something.

On Bo- I have no idea, and time will tell. Who else in the league is getting about $40 Mil per and what are their stats? I don't keep up on such things.

Semien- sounds like a valid point. Like I said, I don't get into the weeds on contract details.

And again, none of this is in defense of what Stearns has done. The proof is in the rotten pudding that has been served up this season. The team has stunk it up big time, and barring some remarkable run, Stearns' report card is at best a D minus, or a generous incomplete (but I would give him a D minus at this point.

The post deadline record has sweetened the rotten pudding a little bit, and it is fun watching this group of players until we have college football to watch (or not! 😜).

EDIT: as a side note. Stearns has a very punchable face. He is cocky and arrogant, and deserves all of the criticism he has received. He will be hard to live with if the Mets have a great season next year.

Yes, you are missing something. It is the strong possibility, if not likelihood, of a salary cap starting next year.

If there is a cap, then we all very much care about how much money players are making. Because there will be an opportunity cost associated with every dollar spent. If you pay Player A, then you can't pay Player B.

Presumably the cap, if there is one, will be implemented on a phased basis. At some point it will fully kick in. Therefore, beware of making long term deals which will tie your hands in the future. And if you can exchange a long term contract for a shorter one, you do it, even if it increases your short term expenditures.

I continue to believe that this is a strong factor in Stearns' decision making. We know it was a factor in the Nimmo/Semien trade, as he pretty much said so.

I also took it as a tailgate type of discussion. The problem I have with the money aspect- Is that the punk Stearns, uses it when it fits him just as he "run prevention" when it fits him- and yet, in both cases, he has proven just to be the dumbest guy in the room.

Yes, Benge, Ewing, McLean, Scott, Thorton have been fun- even Young. But, it does not erase how much Stearns just lies to everyone- and really just sucks. The other issue, more long term- what freaking star with options would come to play for this guy and this organization? You would have to give them Bichette type contracts.

I'm well aware of the possibility of a salary cap, but I only worry about what is in front of me right now, and not what might be in the future. That said, I agree that it will likely be phased in and there could be exceptions/redlines through certain items.

I look at it this way- Stearns is like the person in your workplace, or worse yet, your boss (or bosses boss or big boss) that everyone dislikes for reasons given on Stearns. That said, even with people I dislike and would like to punch in the face if no penalties were involved, I can give them credit for when they do something well or is right.

Maybe on the Bichette-type contracts for future players, or maybe not. Especially if a salary cap is implemented and phased in.

I would give him more credit if when he does things right, it didn't come about because he f-ed things up so royalty in the first place.

The best I can put it, you need a man on first base for the opportunity to get him in to tie or win a game and there are two outs, no one on and a 0-2 count. Pitch is so far out of the strike zone that the catcher can't even reach it but you swung at it so fooled by the pitch, but because it rolls to the backstop- you get to 1st base.

Should you really get credit for reaching first base and doing a great job to get there? Or did you only get there because you f-ed it up in the first place?

Andy Green is taking a hold position on his Stock, at least for now. He announced that Robert Stock will get another start.

Transaction du jour: Curry up, McDermott down.

Tobias Myers, who has been the forgotten man amidst the bullpen turnover, threw an immaculate inning yesterday for Syracuse. Only one inning, but he has been better lately and I think he may be back on Sept 1. FWIW, he was the Brewers starting pitcher in the 2024 wild card Game 3, aka the Pete Alonso game.
