I just told my son we don’t play soccer. I’m not dealing with that. The only reason soccer is popular around the world is because most countries can’t afford anything but a ball and have plenty of dead fields. Leave it to current Americans to throw away the fun sports those countries would kill to play and not realize what they have.

America 2022 - I want to play the poor sport they play in third world countries.
I’m was the exact opposite. I was glad my son wanted to play soccer when he was young ,along with baseball, basketball, and football. He eventually outgrew it. But I absolutely believe it helped his footwork coordination.

The reason is because for Title 9. Have to have a certain amount of male and female programs and SEC opted out of mens soccer, which is a dated decision. Soccer wouldn’t bring in football or basketball revenue, but certainly more than most sports.
I don’t believe there is mens volleyball either, is there ?

UK did win the C-USA soccer title today. I do have a question for any NCAA soccer guys... Bjorgolfsson got sent off with a red card today. We played the last 30 minutes or so with 10. Is there any other penalty for a Red Card in NCAA soccer? NCAAs are next.
I know my son's travel soccer is 1 game for red from aggressive behavior and 2 for fighting.

It's all about Title 9. There must be ab equal # of male/female scholarships. Football obviously uses up a lions share of the men's. Female soccer uses up a lot of female scholarships with the bonus that it's a cheap sport. 2 goals, a ball, and an open field.

All about the money.

Your Cats have a great soccer team this year. You’ll likely be a high seed when the draw comes out tomorrow. Soccer seeds 1-16 overall for a 48 team tourney. You are College Cup material-that’s soccers final 4.

I loved playing soccer because I was midfielder and constantly got to move. But I hated watching it because they score so infrequently and ties are allowed. Absolutely terrible that a game ends without a winner imo.

Opposite with football where I like to watch it but never liked playing it. I liked the physicality but in HS I was a lightweight so I only got to play offense and I hated being on the bench for so long while the defense was in there (I was Oldham county kid and our football teams are trash so we were usually on defense lol).

Ended up ditching football and soccer for lacrosse though. Perfect blend of physicality and finesse. Tough to watch if you never played though because the ball is small and hard to keep track of.

Conference tournaments are considered postseason play. He’ll have to miss a game, also Yellow card accumulations carry over as well. In Europe however, cards don’t carry between various competitions.

I'm a Red Bulls fan so I try to go to the games when they come to Cincy and Columbus. Yeah Cincy stadium is really nice.
That entire area around the stadium is nice too. Tons of places to eat and whatnot.
Red Bulls play like 15 minutes from house and I've been wanting to get into the MLS but I'm having trouble rooting for a team named after an energy drink.

I guess this is a stupid and lazy question but , is there more scoring in lacrosse than soccer or hockey ?

It’s not a dumb question, it’s not a highly viewed sport. There is much more than soccer and hockey.

In competitive games each team seems to score around anywhere between 7-15 goals. Not hard numbers, just ball park estimates from my playing days and watching when I can.

Its basically hockey on grass/turf but the reason scores are so much higher than hockey is the goalie doesn’t wear pads that make him a human tank, so more of the net is exposed. And, imo, it’s harder to predict where the shooter is going to aim because he’s firing the ball from should level rather than a puck on the floor. The lacrosse goalie also only has stick instead of a stick and a glove that they use in hockey.

My oldest kid is about to be 10 and has stopped all other sports but soccer.

If you told me this would happen even 3 years ago I would have probably been very unhappy. Soccer has grown on me big time though. We live near Cinci and went to first MLS game this year. It was awesome. I love that he likes soccer so much....great sport that took 40 years to grow on me.
My 10 year old daughter plays soccer. It's the only hour of my life at any time I can stand to watch the game, ever. I'm a soccer superfan when she's on the field, avoid it like the plague at all other times. Can't stand to watch the game and still crack up that people say it's going to take over in America. They've been saying it for 40 years and it hasn't happened.

Thankfully my son played soccer one time when he was 4 years old and said nope. Now it's just baseball, basketball, and football for him.

I don't think it will ever take over America but I now enjoy the sport for sure. I was like you until literally this year. Just opened my mind to it a bit more when my kid went all in on it.

I disagree. Demographics shifts and cultural tastes changing are happening. MLS seems on really solid footing. Would not be shocked if in 25 years Soccer has overtaken baseball.

Will it ever displace Football and Basketball? Doubtful. And that would probably take a lot longer and a lot more change if it did.

People were saying this 25 years ago. And 15 years ago. It's not going to happen.

Seems like every 4 years during World Cup season you start hearing it again. And then it fades back into the backdrop.

From a participation standpoint soccer is right there with FB basketball and baseball. The next WC will see an immediate rise for soccer baseball has been on life support since the steroid era. If mls can become a more credible league soccer overtakes baseball after the 26 WC.

Btw I remember that first UK d1 soccer team. I had a couple friends who played at UK. It’s come a long way because that was some bad soccer.

Yeah but the next one will be in the USA and the team will be top 5 in the world. I think youth soccer has the highest participation rate of any sport. I’ve watched the progression and this time it’s gonna happen.

We’ve seen MLS go from a third rate novelty league playing in football stadiums to franchises and cities building state of the art soccer only facilities and loaning out players globally for massive transfer fees.

Demographic shifts that move a society take a lot longer than 5,10, 15 years. Especially in a melting pot nation like the United States.

Youth soccer is huge I don't deny that. From a spectator sport perspective it's never going to be one of the top 3 in the states. People have been saying this for so many years, and it always comes up during World Cup season. Not. Going. To. Happen.

MLS will never ever have comparable credibility to MLB, because it will always be considered a lower grade league ranking well behind the top European leagues, whereas MLB will always be regarded as the best baseball league in the world. Folks from around the world follow the leagues regarded as the world’s best in its sport, whereas only a limited niche fan base in that one country follow those regarded as lower grade leagues.

Soccer ain’t gonna surpass baseball in American popularity, at least not in any of our lifetimes (can’t wait to see the @Gromcat reaction when he sees the direction this thread has turned).

Thanks . I took my son and grandson to the soccer game yesterday. It was the first real soccer game I‘ve been to ( other than kid’s league). Late in the game I “halfway “ joked to my son that soccer would be a better game without goalies because UK had 8 shots on goal and James Madison had 4 shots on goal . Why not let the score be 8-4 .

Sure soccer is a poor man’s sport and the USA has had a tough time on the international stage because it’s a rich man’s sport in USA. That is changing. Neither of my parent were born in the USA that’s why i was raised in Lexington to play soccer. Club, high school the pick up games behind the baseball field at UK that moved to the front of commonwealth and by the tennis courts. Indoor at the ice center.

usa has to pick up on the fútbol cinco and create more opportunities in urban areas. Where there’s a basketball court us soccer needs to invest in fb5 to match it. More investment into street (creative) soccer is where it’s lacking.

Baseball stadiums are shrinking and empty. MLS stadiums are getting bigger and full. It’s American soccer so it’s not going to compare to uefa champions league BUT don’t rule out us cities eventually joining premier league, or Bundesliga. If it happens in the nfl to europe you will see a reverse on the soccer front. That’s where the opportunity as spectator sport lies

Major League Baseball stadiums drew 64.5 million people in attendance in 2022.

Major League Soccer drew less than 10 million. Got a ways to go (hint: it's not going to happen).

Not really. The gap is closing fast. MLS plays 34 games. Baseball play 162. If mls played a similar schedule you’re talking 47 million vs 64. If MLS finds a tie in to uefa leagues soccer will blow by baseball. It’s an eventuality as @Popquiz81 says with massive demographic changes. Whether it does or doesn’t won’t phase me.

At one point in my life, I was totally in the group that thought soccer was a terrible sport. I never in 1000 years thought I'd be one of the guys thinking or wanting soccer to grow in the US.

But honestly, outside of college basketball and football, Premier League is a better product than the NBA, NFL or MLB. Bottom line is that in addition to being a fun sport to watch (if you understand some it's intricacies), that the European professional model is superior to the US. It's a more democratic system and it drives me crazy that it doesn't exist in the US.

Even away from the MLS in the US, you have leagues like the USL rapidly growing. Hell, Louisville's soccer stadium is arguably the best sports venue in the city right now. I think it'd be awesome if Lexington ends up embracing it. But anyways, that's my soccer rant.

It will hapwpen eventually. Soccer does continue to grow in US popularity, just not at a fast rate.

What it lacks is star power, there’s not very many familiar faces. There’s a couple but they aren’t widely known like basketball or American football players.

There was a time when the women‘s soccer team was really popular. But that’s been on the decline a bit.

It’s a fun sport. I like it but I don’t follow it heavily.

Congrats on that #1 seed-that's awesome. I've been following college soccer a long time as an IU alum/fan and the tournament is a lot of fun. College soccer is a funny game in that there really are no "mid-majors". Marshall, Akron, Santa Barbara have all won titles recently and schools like that can easily compete with the bigger name schools. Enjoy the ride!
