Why don't Mets bunt? Terrible at bunting, even the pitchers are lousy at it. I read one preview magazine and scout thought Yanks would be lousy.

Nationals' upcoming schedule:
home vs Brewers (24-32 on road)
home vs Padres (30-33 on road)
home vs Marlins (21-41 on road)
road at Cardinals (46-19 at home)
home vs Braves (21-44 on road)
home vs Mets (22-35 on road)

16 of their next 19 games are at home. Yes, playing at St Louis is tough, but the Nationals could easily be poised for a hot streak.

Don't forget, the Mets have 9 more games on the road than Washington does.Mets don't play well against anybody on the road.
4 games at Colorado--Mets are 4-0 against them and Colorado is 27-33 at home.
6 games at Philly--Mets are 8-1 against them and Philly is 28-30 at home. And they just traded the Mets killer Utley.
3 games at Miami--Mets are 9-4 against them and 4-2 at Miami.
4 games at Atlanta--Mets are 4-4- against them and 1-5 at Altanta (gulp). But have not played since June 21 and Mets finally have offense.
3 games at Cincy--Mets are 3-0 against them and Cincy is 28-29 at home.

Washington is only 31-23 at home.
4 home games against Milwaukee, and they are 2-2 against them.
3 home games against San Diego and they are 3-1 against them.
7 home games against Miami, and they are 4-5 against them and 2-2 at home.
4 home games against Atlanta--9-4 against them and 6-0 at home.
3 home games against Orioles, and they are 2-1 against them.
3 home games against Phillies, and they are 8-5 against them and 3-3 at home.

Best chance for Washington to take 1st:
1. Epic collapse by Mets.
2. Washington wins remaining games against Mets. (series is Mets 7 wins to 6 Wash)
3. Mets lose at Altanta and Washington beats Atlanta at home.

Bunting is a lost art. I remember I used to be shocked when a pitcher failed to get a bunt down. Now it's probably worse than 50%. Either work on bunting or just swing away.

Based on our schedule and how poorly the Nats are playing, I expect the Mets to win the division. If they don't, it would be another epic failure.

This weekend will be interesting with Colon, Niese, and Verrett starting. They need to win 2 out of those 3.

Up 8-4 the last time I checked and I do not feel comfortable at all. Hopefully they find a way to win tonight and gain another game. Need to take advantage of such opportunities.

Cespedes wow!!!! Keep this man.
One of the best hitters in baseball. I don't care what they do this offseason except they have to sign this guy. I'm assuming 6yr/130m with player option.
I typically don't hate, but right now I actually hate the Wilpons. There's no way they offer him that contract.

The way his contract is structured, there's basically no way the team he's playing for gets to sign him. (No qualifying offer can be made, which gives the Mets almost no time to make a deal.) Some people think that's one reason he was traded, because the Tigers want him back.

I know he's hitting free agency and will go to the highest bidder. I just want to see the Mets make a serious and competitive offer. It would disgust me if they pull another A-Rod or Vlad Guerrero bait and switch.

Cespedes just misses another one. Not under it quite enough. But if that ball gets down it's probably a triple and the cycle.

At least, for one night, we're saved from hearing another lecture about playing the sub .500 "dregs" of baseball.

The Mets now play Colorado.....which has the second worst record in MLB.....412
After that, they play Philly.....which has the worst record in MLB.....388
Then they play Boston....which has the second worst record in the AL.....455
Then they play Philly.....again ...the worst in MLB......388
Then they play Miami.....only better than Colorado and Philly.....413
Anyone else see the Mets having trouble holding off the Nationals while running THAT gauntlet ?
Sounds like a winning streak ahead for the Mets to me.
Forty two games left and they have three against the Bronx Bombers as THE ONLY ONES vs. a team with a winning record.
Christmas comes early this year for the Amazins.

Nothing but the facts, jack.

Since you love baseball, how is it that the Yankees have lost 4 of 5 to the "dreg" poster children from Cleveland? You'd think a team of winners like the Yanks would dominate the 57-64 last place Indians. What does it say about the Yankees, given your theory rests on the idea that even mediocre teams should dominate teams like the pitiful Indians?

Don't worry I don't expect you to address any of my questions. I've grown accustomed to your pure love for baseball not extending to any conversation related to the fading Yankees.

You do your best to belittle and antagonize Mets fans but seem to shrink away from any meaningful discussion regarding the Yankees, especially their postseason prospects.

Nice win! 5 up. Prospects for keeping Cespedes after this year are not good unless the Mets overpay or he decides he really likes it here. The only thing I don't understand about his contract is why the team that he is currently playing for cannot continue to negotiate with him after the 5 day window. Why take a potential suitor out of the bidding that early. I know this was his original contract with the A's and understand not wanting to be hamstrung with a qualifying offer but 5 day window seems unnecessary. Let's enjoy the ride for now.

Cespedes' agent wrote that clause into his contract for the benefit of whatever team signs him. Since his current team cannot make him a qualifying offer, they cannot receive a compensatory draft pick from his new team. This enhances Cespedes' market value. It takes one potential suitor out of play, but makes him more valuable to the other 29.

As mentioned, by trading Cespedes the Tigers actually increased their chances of re-signing him.

Eyes on the prize, my friends. Still can't believe this team stepped up and delivered on something I was borderline begging for (see the aforementioned Cespedezation requests X pages back).

Since that worked out so well, request #2 is to ring in October 2015, so all my fellow die-hards can put away the '86 DVDs...for at least one winter. :)

Are you new to this whole baseball thing ? Any team can beat any other team if they are playing their best baseball and catch a good team at the right time. And sometimes one team just has another team's "number". You haven't noticed that in baseball previously ? Cleveland has pretty good pitching. Besides, I didn't say the Metsies would absolutely win vs. the "dregs" they're scheduled to play over the next few weeks. I said I like their chances to go on a winning streak and hold off the Nationals. And it's not that they're playing one "dreg". It's that they play nothing but some of the worst teams in MLB over the next several weeks. And I know they didn't make up their own schedule. That's why I said they got an early Christmas present.

"Don't worry I don't expect you to address any of my questions. I've grown accustomed to your pure love for baseball not extending to any conversation related to the fading Yankees."

Well, I sure hope I've addressed your questions. I don't recall me or anyone else predicting a pennant or World Series win for the Yankees. Nor do I recall saying anything about my love of baseball. The Yanks have exceded anyone's expectations this season....including mine. Almost every preseason projection had them finishing fourth in their division and not even making the playoffs. It's been an up-and-down season, but overall quite enjoyable. And I like our chances of making the playoffs. I've never thought they were the best team in baseball this year. But they're in it and they have a shot. I don't expect them to win the World Series every year...just more often than every thirty years.

"You do your best to belittle and antagonize Mets fans but seem to shrink away from any meaningful discussion regarding the Yankees, especially their postseason prospects."

See, that's the problem with a rather large percentage of Mets fans I've encountered over the years. They're quick to antagonize and belittle Yankees fans,Yankees players, and the Yankees history of success. But they cry like little girls when they're on the receiving end of such treatment. They can dish it out, but they can't take it. And I rather enjoy being the guy that makes them cry.
I posted earlier in this thread the Mets schedule over the next several weeks, pointing out the poor records of their upcoming opponents. That's nothing but facts. Stop your sobbing and just enjoy your good fortune. Just be advised that you will be facing a slightly better quality of opponent when you get to the playoffs....and I can't see how you won't get there....especially given how few bumps there seem to be ahead in the road to the playoffs for the Metsies.

I'm new to baseball? Yes, I agree, any team can beat another if they're playing their best baseball. That doesn't describe the Indians who just lost 4 of 6 to the Twinkies and Bosox, and are playing game 9 of a 10 game road trip. The Indians have pretty good pitching, since when? They have the number 15 ranked pitching staff and much of that is because of Corey Kluber. He is one of the best pitchers in the AL, regardless of his won/loss record. Amazingly, however, in the 7 games you played them, he hasn't pitched. I don't think the Yankees have played the best pitching the Indians have to offer.

After this Cleveland series, the Yankees play the Stros, who are definitely a good team. They then play the gauntlet of futility when they face the Braves, Bosox, Tampa, and Baltimore. It's very likely that none of those teams will be over .500 when the Yankees play them. I know you find me dense, but I just don't see how the Yankees' schedule is that much more difficult than the Mets. Yet even with that fairly easy schedule, the Yankees continue to run into sub .500 "bumps" in the road to, I'm assuming, the second wild-card.

"Don't worry I don't expect you to address any of my questions. I've grown accustomed to your pure love for baseball not extending to any conversation related to the fading Yankees."

I don't think you've addressed my questions. I'm actually more confused now. Based on your other posts, I got the impression that expecting winning every year is what being a fan is all about. You also claimed Met fan happiness with a surprisingly successful season that none expect will end in a championship is a sign of a loser mentality. It, however, sounds like that's your mentality when it comes to the Yankees this season. I find it a bit hypocritical that you would criticize Met fans for having the same view of their team that you do of yours.

"You do your best to belittle and antagonize Mets fans but seem to shrink away from any meaningful discussion regarding the Yankees, especially their postseason prospects."

See, that's the problem with a rather large percentage of Mets fans I've encountered over the years. Now because I challenged your self-serving assertions, I "cry like a little girl, which is typical of Mets fans you've encountered." That statement is inherently ridiculous. Nevertheless, I don't think I've belittled the Yankees or their fanbase anywhere in this thread. My problems are specifically with the smarmy manner with which you post half-truths and backhanded compliments. I recognize that the Yankees are a classy organization with a wonderful history. I can only wish that my Mets had a fraction of the success that the Yankees have enjoyed. I do, however, believe that the 2000 and 2008 WS were tainted. When all three 2000 WS starting pitchers and several other prominent players are named in the Mitchell Report and ARod carries you to a title 2008, it's hard to imagine how any fan could be feel good about those wins. Nevertheless, cheating seems much more acceptable to you than random circumstance, like scheduling. Based on what you've said, if the Yankees played easy schedules in 2000 and 2008 those championships would have been gifts, but since they won on the backs of dope fiends, then it's perfectly acceptable. Maybe I'm the only one who sees the cognitive dissonance in those two views.

My issues continue to be with your inability to give credit to a young team having a successful season and, moreover, attempting to diminish from it. Admittedly, the Mets don't play a difficult schedule, but that's hardly their fault. Yet you continue, in your mealymouthed manner, to belabor that point, going so far as to call this season a schedule makers' Christmas gift. The implication being that we're not smart enough to see that we're essentially rooting for a farce. Nevertheless, The more objective fans see a team with dominant starting pitching(under control for several years), a solid lineup post trade-deadline, better than average defense, and a serviceable bullpen. The organization has the 5th best farm system which should allow the team to continue their success in future years.

I won't even comment on the Mets fans "can dish it out, but can't take it" comment, since, it's coming from a guy who appears only when the Mets are doing poorly and disappears when they're doing well. The hypocrisy is so blatant that it makes me concerned more for your lucidity than objectivity.

Ruh-roh. Duda on DL. Back problems. Mets replace him with lefty bullpen arm Dario Alvarez, so for now it's 13 pitchers and a four man bench.

Mets also re-acquire Eric Young Jr. in a straight cash swap with Atlanta. Assigned to Vegas for now, but I would not be shocked to see him on the playoff roster.

Every hit ball is being smoked. It's fun to watch, but it doesn't feel like baseball.
