Given the limited information, a pulmonary embolism resulting in lung tissue death is possible. However, venous blood clots cannot pass through the lungs and travel to the brain. The NASCAR community should stick to what they know best if they are circulating that rumor.

They should not race to any conclusions.
RIP Mr Busch.

Severe pneumonia that rapidly progressed to sepsis.

He was feeling bad for a few weeks prior to progressing to pneumonia and then sepsis. Awful to think that a little medical care up front would have likely nipped this in the bud.

So I'm trying to wrap my head around how this can happen to a healthy 41 year old man. I feel like there has to be some mitigating factors for something like this to happen. I lost a friend and former college roommate back when he was 39 and living in Florida to something similar, cold progresses to pneumonia, one day he's active, upbeat, talking in the hospital, next day he's dead. But he was a dermatologist, had caught some skin condition, and was treating himself along with treatment from 2 other doctors which suppressed his immune system. Given the similarities here makes me wonder if there was more going on.

In this case, I don’t think it was that sudden. Sounds like he was pretty sick for several weeks.

Kyle Busch thought his body would be able to fight off the pneumonia. My father when he was in late 80’s, had pneumonia and was coughing for several days or even weeks but finally decided to go the emergency room. He stayed in the hospital for several days and we heard he was hallucinating see people during his stay. My mom who caught sepsis knew something was wrong, I believe difficulty breathing decided to go to the emergency room and was treated and would have passed if she didn’t realize something was seriously wrong. Both my parents seldom go to the emergency room maybe 1-2 times in their lifetime. I just hope I realize when I need to go to the emergency room when I need it.

If he had bacterial pneumonia "days to weeks" before this happened, how the hell did it go undiagnosed? Rhetorical question. I wonder if he tried to tough it out or just ignored his doctor's advice.

I'm betting on either of those options, in that order.

In general (not all of them), but men are a bit ignorant when it comes to ignoring small problems. And then when they become big problems, they are insufferable. As I have aged, I don't ignore small problems that persist for more than a day or two. For Kyle Busch, he may have felt that making the race was the most important thing, and his health could wait. That's fairly common with younger men.

Probably tried to tough it out, saying it was only a cough or bad cold. If a doctor was involved, it would be interesting to see what transpired between the two. Either way, the day before, he was found laying on a bathroom floor, coughing up blood. That didn't send a warning flare up to anyone, including Kyle? And if anyone who let him in the simulator knew about the day prior, what the hell were they thinking? That's at least three people at the bare minimum who could have intervened and got him treatment. And you know there were plenty more who had their hands in the pot over the days and weeks leading up to his death. Could have been a life most likely saved had someone done the right thing, including Kyle.
