So, I ventured over to the Liar for the first time in a while. Depressing is an understatement.

Jackson had 84 murders in 2018. Highest in 20 years and already 10 murders to start 2019. 4 murdered on Wednesday alone. One was a pastor outside his church, an 18yr murdered over a botched cell phone transaction outside a Wal-Mart, the 2 young girls murdered their own mother last week or week before (Magnolia, MS not in Jackson).....

I live in Orlando which is in Orange County with a population of 1,349,000. There were 107 murders in all of Orange County last year, which is still a lot, but good God I feel like I'm living in the safest place on Earth compared to what I just read over on the Liar about the Jackson, MS crime stats.

Jackson, MS has a population of 167,000 according to last census. 1990 the population was 195,000, which is a decrease of over 14% over that time, but yet murder rates are rising.

I read about the mayor's plan to get the $4mil "Real Time Crime Center" up and running, so law enforcement can watch the neighborhoods in real time and hope to stop crimes before they happen using facial recognition, cameras and other technology. This is a good step. Not sure what else can happen other than the National Guard patrolling every neighborhood and shopping center in Jackson.


Also, the Nissan plant laying off 700 contract workers on top of all this.

What hope does Central Mississippi have? It's turned into a 3rd world country. Millennial population had a net migration out of the state of 4% the last stats I saw for 2017.

I thought I had lost hope years ago, but this depressing realization shows things have gotten worse with no end in sight.

The overwhelming majority of jackson violent crime is black on black.

No different crime-wise than any other southern city. Stay out of the bad areas and you avoid 80% of the crime.

There's actually a lot of things to be positive about, but you'll never read them. Cspire, L3, Continental (obviously), all the stuff going on from Belhaven/Fondren over to Eastover, new museums, Sanderson Farms is now a stand-alone PGA event, new Frontier flight at the airport. Some of the best restaurants out there. Brandon and Madison are still kicking *** too.

The zoo could possibly move, too, which would concentrate more good things in a good area. Downtown Jackson's 'grid' has a ton of potential. The investors will eventually come, even if they are from out-of-state.

But please, keep on hatin' from far away. One day you'll come back to enjoy the fruit of everyone else's work.

....and almost none of the violent crimes are committed by first time offenders. If the courts did as good of a job keeping bad guys in jail as JPD does catching them crime of the violent variety would drop dramatically .

So what? Most people who murder people murder their own race. That's a fact. But it's also true there are innocent bystanders. A family friend of ours was put in his car, driven to an ATM, robbed and shot in the head and murdered a couple years ago.

Of course they were youth who committed the crimes.

I know we can generally count on you to say something stupid, but holy 17.

The crime is city-wide. There is no "safe areas". Sure, there is some degree of safety and peace of mind behind the walls and fences in a couple of places. But they are two blocks away from where murders are happening regularly. Name the safe location -- I'll show you where someone has been blasted within a 20 minute walk in the last year.

Chicago - 1 in 4850 people get blasted.

Jackson - 1 in 1988 people get blasted. You are 2.5 times as likely to get blasted in Jackson compared to the place that's always on the news for gun violence.

I located my office in Jackson by choice. I love the area I’m in and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

The crime is a serious issue. But with a few exceptions, these murders are confined to areas where you never have to go unless you’re on your way to the zoo. And hopefully that will change soon.

Yeah tell that victim's families. Remember there was a bass fishing tournament and an out of town fisherman was shot in the head point blank when he was getting something out of his car in the hotel parking lot the night before the tournament? I think this happened a few years ago. Lots of similar stories.

Systemic and generational poverty is the problem not skin color. Then throw on top of that a cultural tendency for some minority cultures to discouraged other peers from assuming the social expectations of society. Makes for a swirling self perpetuating shitshow.

Yeah, I don’t think he’s making the point he wants to make with those maps. In fact I think he’s making mine.

Which brings me to another point. It’s always been strange to me the eagerness and glee which other Mississippians love to talk down Jackson. It’s really a strange thing.

Baltimore, Atlanta, ect. Same problems. There is nothing new under the sun. You can't stop crime, but you can stay away from it. Humanity is what it is, and there will always be crime. Poverty and crime are closely linked. That's why a place like Madison has fought to keep apartments out of the city. You price the crime out so to speak.

I think his point is that, while the dangerous parts of Jackson are indeed unacceptably violent, if you keep out of those areas and don't engage in high-risk activities, you can dramatically reduce your risk to a level more in line with what you see in a lot of other cities.

A friend is a JPD cop and the prosecutors, courts, and prison systems frustrate him to no end. They routinely arrest people for violent crimes and see them back on the streets in a week.

There have been about 11 murders east of I55 in the city the past 3 years. If you add 1/2mile west of I55 to that equation, that number jumps to about 25. And the widest accessible part of Jackson east of 55(County Line) is still a narrow/small section of the whole. It's the second safest area of Jackson for sure, propped up by a couple of big neighborhoods with big walls and full time people keeping an eye on things. Still within a 20 minute walk(one mile) of someone being blasted constantly.

There is truly nowhere in the city of Jackson, not one inch, that you are safer than you are in the most dangerous inch of the immediate surrounding municipalities.

I live within a mile of the actual safest part of Jackson and go through the city constantly. It "talks down" itself. The city has been ruined by a number of factors and there's no point in singing kumbaya and pretending otherwise.

One of my college roommates was deployed to Iraq around the same time I was co-oping in Jackson. We always joked he was safer over there than I was living alone in Jackson.

I live and work in Jackson. This is my choice. Always puzzles me when people not engaged in helping the people of Jackson feel the need to criticize from afar. I'm not going to waste my time criticizing Orlando, instead, I'm going to keep showing up every day working to make Jackson a better place. But you do you.

But don't spout this generic all of "Central Mississippi" having no hope, Nissan laying off workers and third world country stuff when you're only reading news from afar. Using that logic I'd never come to Orlando again because there was a terrorist event there over two years ago. There are areas in the Jackson metro and even Jackson itself that are great to live and work. Look north of I-220 and east of I-55. That is still Central Mississippi. Unfortunately weak leadership and a weak judicial system in Jackson aren't helping. When you ask about hope, it is those areas that have to be turned around.

Birmingham and New Orleans both have a higher murder rate. Baton Rouge, Savannah, Memphis and Atlanta are close behind.

Just shut up.

Ha ha, holy **** I didnt realize this. As native Chicagolanders, my wife and I talk about the absurd violence rates there each time we drive in to visit(3-4 times a year). I didnt realize Jackson was so much higher.

Actually skin color contributes greatly to the problem

in that skin color is the main criteria for being elected to a public office in Jackson.

Engine is cherry-picking stats that don't tell the whole story as usual. Chicago is a major city with a land area of 234 square miles, with every type of person under the sun, rich, poor and all in between. Jackson has a land area of 113 square miles full of mostly poor people. The cities are in no way comparable. That's why I mentioned "other southern cities" in my first post, which encompasses cities that are more on a peer level to Jackson.

It also shows the flaw in the way Chicago gets reported. They have a huge number of crimes but they are also a huge city.

People are stupid, they'll believe anything without digging in deep. mstateglfr, you are typically one of those who don't thoroughly examine the stats, which is why I figure you agree with the ole engine on the reg.

Go hang out in the worst area of Chicago and the worst area of Jackson. They are probably similar to the worst parts of every city.
