OT: Indiana with zero players left on roster?

I really can't stand what happened to the sport that I enjoyed so much. In the past, players would consider staying when there was a coaching change, because there was something about having loyalty the name on the front of the jersey rather than only caring about the one on the back (to borrow a movie line).

You could say the same about the fans.
A lot of posts saying "It's about the name on the front not the name on the back. Players have no value without the team."

But then people seem sure up in a huff when the names on the back change.

At this point, it's not about either.... It's about the name on the check.
One of the attractions of college sports (at least for me) was rooting for players that chose to play for my alma mater. Watching them develop. Watching them represent my university. I had an interest in the person. The way it’s headed now I couldn’t care less about the player. There’s no connection. Especially basketball.

This . It’s amazing that all these people just want to whine about how much the sport sucks , but they are still flocking to the rac or glued to the tourney games.
Don't get me wrong, I still love college basketball and support it by attending games and watching hundreds of them during the season.

However, just like husbands piss off their wives (and vice versa) and children piss off their parents (and vice versa), it doesn't mean they don't love and support one another.

Yeah , but that’s real life .
This is entertainment. If people don’t like the entertainment , they can just choose to spend entertainment dollars elsewhere . It’s getting old listening to people whine about how much they supposedly don’t like the sport, but yet they are still here. No one is forcing them to be here . Just walk away

Already given up my season tickets, and reducing my football tickets. Those might go entirely after next season, too.

Very much getting harder for me to care.

Not sure this analogy holds up...
Are you saying that if your spouse shopped around to get more $ in a different family & left you & your kids that you would still love the current environment?

Indiana will love it if they pull the same thing in the portal that they did with the football team.

Their roster this season was VERY well paid , one of the top NIL budgets in the big ten for bball, including the highest rated transfer of the last offseason.

Come on. No one loves it. It needs to be fixed. Unfortunately it’s not happening quickly. It’s just never going back to the old way. The NCAA and universities were greedy for far too long. Now it’s too much change too quickly.
It needs some fixes. Need 2 year contracts. One time Transfer. 20mm cap on NIL. Only 2 outside contracts per basketball team.

I don’t like Rutgers without a president and AD. We are always behind the curve.
Yup we are not only behind the curve but we are in a total sports status quo for a year where zero is getting done and zero is going to happen which of course puts us further behind the curve

Hate to break it to you but it was more likely the NCAA’s more stringent transfer rules back then that kept these teams together. If they could transfer and play immediately back then it would have gone tits up just as fast.

Agree with every word . Feel the exact same way

My thinking is that, long term, it at not good for the sport, that it will erode fan support and hurt the bottom line

However im now beginning to think that’s all “old man” thinking . That the average fans doesn’t really give a f$&k and it won’t hurt the sport one bit

I think middle-age/ older more diehard fans (like many on this board including me) are dinosaurs in this regard

Unless this ends up harming the bottom line nothing will be done

The ncaa tournament is having its best ratings in several years whether you think everyone hates it or not the general public is watching it more than they had been

The thing I hate most is the age of the Cinderella is over forever. Look at Belmont, they lost players to Maryland and Ole Miss who made key contributions to those schools. You won't see it again, as any team with a good player will quickly lose him.

The fan bases of the top 50 programs dwarf the next 250 combined. They’re loving this. The only ones who love Cinderella are the have nots, which we at RU squarely are. This isn’t going to change back.

Far too many threads on this message board are moaning about Rutgers bleak future under NIL and the transfer portal. The Rutgers athletic department has to make a decision as to the level of commitment required to have winning teams.Right now kicking the can down the road hoping things will get better seems to be the approach and mediocrity is the result.

Likely means that Indiana will win the BIG championship next season
and a quick google of who might leave the Mountaineers to follow their coach ( if the money is right) found this
TRANSFER PORTAL TIMELINE

Wednesday | 3.26.2025

  • G Sencire Harris, who started at guard for the Mountaineers this season, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after one season at WVU.
Tuesday | 3.25.2025

  • F Amani Hansberry, who started at 'center' for the Mountaineers this season, has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after one season at WVU.
Monday | 3.24.2025

  • G KJ Tenner has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and will search for a new home. He has four years to play three seasons left.
Friday | 3.21.2025

  • F Braydon Hawthorne has requested a release from his National Letter of Intent and will look around at new schools. However, he explicitly left open the possibility of recommitting to WVU.
Tuesday | 3.18.2025

  • Shortly after news broke that Darian DeVries would be heading to Indiana, word that his son, Tucker, would be following leaked out.
  • A couple hours after the coaching change became official, four-star wing Kelvin Odih announced that he would ask to be let out of his National Letter of Intent.
  • An hour after the Odih news, four-star forward Trent MacLean told 247Sports that he would be requesting his release from the National Letter of Intent.
Monday | 3.17.2025

  • G Jonathan Powell announced his intention to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

I can’t stand this. Maybe we should monetize the team’s name. How does the Jersey Mike’s Knights sound?

Shelby is more detached than PMike. It’s entertainment, win or lose. And he’s not a homer. Across the country some players are good and some are bad…and that applies to Rutgers players too. Blind adulation compromises objectivity.

Exactly. All of the NCAA's stringent and often draconian rules concerning player eligibility, player movement, and player compensation created the world that people are now romanticizing.
