I didn't intend for this to be about CC, who has done a fine job. My question was more about Rutger's ability to pay that kind of money, even if the talent was the same
If the results were there I think they would. Don’t know about the length. Even GS got bumped from 4 to 7 so if the results were on that level for a couple years I wouldn’t be surprised on a bump to double digits. Money is always found at these schools if they really want it.

Did you really compare a highly coveted NFL head coaching job to Rutgers football?

And yes there would be a shortage of suitors. Because had you fired him after three seasons that would have meant you fired the only man who has had success at Rutgers after only 3 full seasons since taking over a team on a 21 game conference losing streak. Not to mention only two full recruiting classes. I know you’re not the poster I responded to, but do you honestly think you would be able to hire a rising HC (Cig) with a bottom of the barrel NIL, a dysfunctional athletic department, and without the ability to outbid the top competition?

I know our fanbase is delusional at times, but this gave me a laugh
So you are saying that no other coach would have taken the job. HC are always looking for a challenge and think they are the person that can turn it around.

“So you are saying they won’t fill the position.”
After everything you just said about Oregon State. I highly doubt they hire someone as good and on a rising trajectory as Cignetti. Which is the subject of topic.

In my previous post I said “do you honestly think you would be able to hire a rising HC (Cig) with a bottom of the barrel NIL, a dysfunctional athletic department, and without the ability to outbid the top competition?”

And to answer your question, no we would not have a long list of quality suitors. You clearly don’t remember the hot board that included rising studs such as Steve Addazio and Butch Jones back in 2019.

you’re not just wrong, you’re delusional.

We had an AD who was actively hooking up with a coach and did not believe in the importance fundraising for NIL.
And you’re telling me that you think we’d have a lot of interest? From who? Mark Mangino?
CC was in his 60s, I believe it was getting to the point that he had to pull the trigger. Don't think we could have gotten him because of his age this would have been his one and only shot at the big time in my opinion. But you never know, i think our next hire should be under 50. I am happy for CC but probably have about 5-6 more years before he rides off into the sunset.

So you would have fired a coach after the most successful season in 10 years.

Then you would have attempted to hire one of the best up and coming targets in the game even though just about every B1G and SEC school can outbid you?

Not to mention you would need the approval from the school’s board of governors to do all of this. Which would not happen. And not to mention you would need money from the big boosters whose coach you just fired despite coming off the first winning season in 10 years. And between paying Schiano and Cig, we’re talking at least $12- $15 million a year. So good luck getting money from the boosters/school for that.

like I said, this isn’t fantasy football
Ok so you would have fired GS but there have to be some expectations. Do what dhould our record be in
2025
2026
2027

we can't keep what on GS, if he isn't getting it done

First it was facilities. Upgraded to 3 killer practice fields. Upgraded the Hale Center to a great facility. Then it was the coach salaries and staff- staff is bloated (except no dedicated special teams "coach), Greg's salary raised for than 50%. Now it's NIL. Been giving more for years. It's always the fans' fault though:

And when you ask 'em, "How much should we give?"
They only answer, "More, more, more"

It ain't me, it ain't me

Agreed! The thing is if Cignetti was hired in 2019 his ask would have been similar to Schiano. Money for infrastructure and staff. I would hope if Schiano was hired in 2023 his ask would have been similar to Cignetti. Money for NIL! Schiano has said openly priority is NiL over infrastructure going forward. That’s why the all important “field house” initiative has taken a back seat.

Yes but the results have to be shown first

We did not see this after great seasons in either major sport to the extent needed.

Unless one our millennial or Gen Z fans hits it big or Zinn is a miracle worker this will likely continue. It's just part of NJ culture to be a hater.

Ohio State’s NIL budget is between 18 to 25 million. Is more, more, more better than 18 million?

Check back with me when Rutgers has sniffed the CFP. It takes a while to move up from the kids' table. Indiana found a way. Good for them. We have to find our Mark Cuban. 🤪

It goes the other way too, you know.

Suppose you could fire GS today and replace him

1) Who would you hire
2) how would you pay him
3) what buyout terms and commitment would you be willing to agree to
and finally..
4) what about YOUR expectations for your new hire for 25, 26, 27?
5) and when you replace THAT coach in 27, how do you pay the next guy?

Yeah, it is easy to say GS makes excuses, asks for more and more, etc.. but the "solution" to winning being replace coach.. but not the support for the program to reach a competitive level has been tried here since the D1A - D1AA split in the 1970s. We have moved up in competition, have much better everything than way back when, but the sands keep shifting.. now with this NIL BS and easy transfers. Yet the disgruntled still offer the same imaginary solution.. change the coach. Yeah, Curt Cignetti seems like a miracle worker.. but Indiana had the money to support him probably twice as well as Rutgers supports Schiano.

Was wondering about how many billionaire RU alums exist? Is there a list? Grok produced this:

1. Tony Tamer
1979, B.A./B.S. (specific major not specified)
Private equity (co-founder and co-executive chairman, H.I.G. Capital, managing $70B in assets)
$7.8 billion

2. Duncan MacMillan
1966, B.S. in Mathematics
Financial data services (co-founder, Bloomberg L.P., 4% stake)
$1.8 billion

3. John Colgrove
Not specified (B.S. in Computer Science)
Data storage technology (co-founder and Chief Visionary Officer, Pure Storage)
$1.2 billion

Other prominent wealthy alumni (multi-millionaires, not billionaires) include executives like Greg Brown (Motorola Solutions CEO) and Sherilyn McCoy (former Avon CEO), but they do not reach billionaire status based on public estimates.

CC just got a long term extension and is getting at least twice what GS is. Where will Rutgers get the money to match that for someone else?

well, I get the logic there. if you get someone who gets us to the CFP then the money will appear... especially in such a large market compared to Indiana. And Rutgers in the Big Ten is not as hopeless to attract a coach as Rutgers in conference chaos land. But we are still in a state with high cost of living, not a great history of winning college football and, since Schiano is thought of, generally, as a good football coach, firing him could make us a very risky place to become a head coach. That whole coaches graveyard thing that existed before Schiano went to the NFL from here could be back.

We are in a very dangerous spot and if I could wave a magic wand regarding this issue, the trolls would be unable to find this site, the fans who are upset would find the patience of monks, and we'd just drop this hotseat thing and wait and see what happens for a couple years until we are in a better posiiton to see what Keli Zinn can do and if we can build the support structure needed to both be more demanding and be able to act on it without risking everything.

And you know why, right? Maybe if we went undefeated and been robbed of a NC shot in the title game.. even at 8-0 SEC coaches were campaigning against an undefeated Rutgers, saying their 1 or 2 loss champ would be more deserving.. maybe then we would have seen an effect.. but we were still in a dying Big East.

It was said back then, under those conditions, you'd need 2 consecutive 2006-type seasons to move the needle.. to boost recruiting.. to make the games "events" like that Louisville game was.

Indiana football (their basketball rep and support is a given it would take a long time to lose).. but Indiana Football is having that 2nd consecutive season and after a couple big and meaningful wins they felt comfortable locking down their coach. That's what we would need to do the same thing.. or, rather, a similar thing because. still. Indiana as a Big Ten school with athletic support, they are ahead of us... as they just proved.

Let's just get out of the game healthy. Show some fire, compete, show some creativity... but, in preseason, no one predicted a W for this game and the way the season has gone I see no reason to change that. If we shock the world, great.. but get out healthy with a chance at Ws later.

Didn’t GS get a raise to 2M/yr after that year iirc? I want to say that was the 16th highest salary in the country at the time. Ironically JF’s salary is 16th highest currently.

Also didn’t the stadium expansion also happen on the back of that successful season?

After some success, many schools shake their magic money trees and it appears lol. Things happen somehow or another when there’s success.

You know I’ll even add this. I’ve mentioned here in 2024 we had a 64M football operating budget (higher than 61M at IU). That was the 6th highest in the B10 and 12th highest in the country. IIRC the year before we had a 49M football operating budget. Where did that extra 15M come from? Where does the money to add 50M/yr to the AD budget for the next 5 years at VT come from….like I said whether it’s donations or fees or whatever other sources…the money suddenly shows up if they really want it.

Because coaches are judges in wins and loses, there are people on here that support GS but won't say what they think he has to do the keep his job. My expectation of a new coach is 1. Get the fan base, especially the alumni excited. 2. Get to 7-8 wins their first year and 8 or 9 the second year. Someone that can bring in a true dual threat QB because I think that what it will take to get us over the hump. I also want a coach that is under the age of 50 from a winning program that can at least bring 5-7 players with him that can contribute. wins became the conversation when I asked you about your expectation. Go ahead a keep GS and he underperforms this year and next and what players will want to come here. If it was all about NIL Texas Tech should be #1 and Texas# 2.

Here’s the thing, I wasn’t discussing any of that. But thank you for explaining to me how coaches are judged . Again, my conversation had to do with not firing him in 2022 and magically replacing him with Cignetti. Which is laughable. We’re not even talking about the same thing so we’ll just end this. And lastly, no one said it was “all nil.”

I was excited to see Ash go and happy to have GS back. The only reason my group kept our tickets. Your Ws expectations are unrealistic unless you are writing 8 figure checks. Kids came here and left because of NIL. If you are not in the top 30 NI nationally, that means you are #11 in the B1G.
