how is it that the MSM has not made a big deal of Juneteenth every year? I am in the New York market and have never seen it mentioned until this year.

So.. if this becomes an official holiday.. what current holiday is on the chopping block? Remember Lincoln's and Washington's BDays were combined to Presidents' Day to make room for MLK Day.

New Year's Day 01/01/2020 Wednesday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day 01/20/2020 Monday
Presidents Day 02/17/2020 Monday
Good Friday 04/10/2020 Friday
Memorial Day 05/25/2020 Monday
Independence Day (Observed) 07/03/2020 Friday
Labor Day 09/07/2020 Monday
Columbus Day 10/12/2020 Monday
Election Day 11/03/2020 Tuesday
Veteran's Day 11/11/2020 Wednesday
Thanksgiving Day 11/26/2020 Thursday
Christmas Day 12/25/2020 Friday

Columbus Day, Election Day and Veterans Day are really formal holidays? I know I have to work on those days. In addition to Juneteenth, they should make Halloween or Valentines Day a holiday, and get rid of Columbus Day and Election Day as holidays

And this is why we have a big problem in our country. So ugly - "newly won freedom" really?

I think this is a pivotal moment in our country's history. Perhaps the election of Trump was the catalyst needed to finally make us come to terms with our racist past - our country was built on the backs of enslaved people. To this day the discrepancy in wealth can be traced back in many instances to "old money" that came from exploitation of unpaid labor. During the 1920s and 1930s the violence against African Americans was absolutely unbelievable, then African Americans served our country in WW2 only to return to more racism. The fight continued in the 1960s and here we are 60 years later and the fight goes on. Sad

Ugly? LOL. Virtue Signal harder.

Racist Past? We as a country came to grips with that in the 50s and 60s. Maybe you didn't. I judge people on the content of their character and have since I was a kid. You want to get all spun up on Marxist anti-American propaganda go for it. Go wash some guys feet. But leave the rest of us that see this for what it is. An attack on the greatest country on Earth and an attempt to shake her foundations.

If you really care about racism you'd be in other countries doing your good work. Here? You're just virtue signalling.

20s and 30s? Violence against Blacks is unbelievable NOW. Do something about that. And hint - it's not white folks and police doing the killing.

I'd be interested in hearing about how President Trump is Racist but I don't think I'll see your reply.

It is a date, one that I never was aware of before this post, that should be celebrated by ALL Americans. The celebration of the end of one of the greatest EVILS inflicted upon human beings by their so called Fellow Humans.

The END? Slavery is still practiced in the Middle East and Africa - and virtually everywhere child labor laws are weak or the sex trade is active.

As a matter of fact the "Evil Western Culture" being pilloried right now was the first in history to end the practice.

It is easy for us Northerners to feel a sense of moral superiority on the slavery issue. But NJ does not have a proud history on the issue.

Slavery was not officially banned in NJ until 1846, which for a northern state was very late. But even then, de facto slavery continued, as some slaves were legally redefined as "indentured servants for life". Or some slaveowners simply sold their slaves to Southern buyers, rather than free them. It wasn't until passage of the 13th Amendment that slavery was truly ended in NJ.

Yeah I did some research years ago and IIRC NJ had a couple of women that lived in slavery beyond the passage of the 13A.

Well now it can be used as a tool to divide the country so the MSM is suddenly interested.

I would say Columbus Day is the obvious choice. It’s a pretty innocuous holiday and the current statue toppling aside, would it really be missed?
good call.. cannot believe I didn't go down the list and see it.. how can you have Columbus Day with no surviving statues? And as soon as all the dead Presidents (and at least one living President) are branded criminals.. Presidents Day will be available for reassignment. Hello Mayday! Or maybe George Soros Day. (which is not a criticism of Juneteenth.. I have always thought of Lincoln's Birthday as being a holiday to celebrate emancipation).

Yes, I will respond. What is a "virtue signal"? Never heard this before. Coming to grips in the 50s and 60s apparently meant turning tear gas and hoses on demonstrators, denying African Americans access to restaurants and other public venues, burning churches (and killing young girls in the process), and lynchings. Marxist - really? that's just bizarre. You probably need to read some history about US history in the 1920s and 1930s and the systematic racism and violence against African Americans during that period that set back progress for decades.

As it turns out, I am a mainstream Christian. Your reference to "washing feet" of course is a Biblical reference to humility as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. "As His followers, we are to emulate Him, serving one another in lowliness of heart and mind, seeking to build one another up in humility and love. When we seek the preeminence, we displease the Lord who promised that true greatness in His kingdom is attained by those with a servant’s heart (Mark 9:35; 10:44). When we have that servant’s heart, the Lord promised, we will be greatly blessed (John 13:17).

Your comment was: "If you really care about racism you'd be in other countries doing your good work. Here? You're just virtue signalling." I have been active in sponsoring refugees from war torn African nations for the last 20 years. In fact, my church has sponsored at least a dozen people and continues to do so. Their stories are compelling and incredibly sad, far more traumatic than anything we've experienced here in the US (until now).

Trump is the most divisive president I've seen in 50 years. He cares about nothing except himself. He has a history of racism in his own business dealings (failing to rent to minorities), and his condemnation of the "Central park five" (later shown to be bogus), Obama "birther" nonsense, good people on both sides, attacking Gold Star Muslin parents, "******** countries," and on and on...

The democrats know exactly what they are doing. Use the George Floyd issue tip whip up the black communities into a frenzy, show prominent democrats wearing kente cloths and kneeling in submission all to keep the blacks on the democrat plantation. Meanwhile if anyone did any research they would discover that the civil right act of 1964 was passed with a majority republican vote. Most democrats opposed it! Anyhow here we are in 2020 and blacks who have been so abused by the democrats until they need their vote. We live in interesting times.

wait? You are suggesting Trump is not racist???? Don’t tell his followers in Tulsa, because that is one of the most important reasons he is popular. Does Trump even deny he is racist? after a life-time of well-documented racist statements and actions

So, 90% sure I’m the one who initially got this thread shut down. Someone posted Obama hated Christmas and banned Christmas trees in the White House so I posted a video of Obama saying ‘Merry Christmas’ in front of Christmas trees, some in the WH.

Look, I don’t care which way the mods here swing nor do I care about the drama or bannings of these boards. Ban me if you’d like. I’ll still read about football here. But please, for the love of god, if you’re going to remove a video of a former President from the thread, please remove the total misinformation post that inspired it. Don’t remove the truth and leave the lie out there. That’s what’s sowing so much distrust and chaos in this country. That is all.

I'd love to see the statements and actions. All I see is the media taking his quotes and actions out of context and you Lefties running with it. Dummies. Turn off Jim Acosta once in a while.

I never understood why Columbus Day was a holiday, even as a kid when I still believed he discovered America. Whether you are black, white, or purple, Juneteenth should be a holiday. I don't understand how anyone could argue against it. Slavery based solely on the color of your skin has been around for a long time (the US did not invent it as reported recently.) That it is still going on to this day in some places boggles my mind. Full disclosure - I first heard about it 2 or 3 days ago also, but I have lived in NJ my entire life.

"I never understood why Columbus Day was a holiday,"
After Columbus' 3rd voyage and still no India, Queen Isabella outfitted Spain's ships with mapquest so they wouldn't get lost.
Mapquest made a bundle and started a holiday for Cris

President Lincoln and the blood of over 360,000 Union soldiers freed the slaves and Dr. King fought to bring civil rights to all Americans.
Those two holidays are enough.

But if it makes everyone happy make it a holiday.
