Figured football board gets the most traffic. As fyi appears Gulliver's on Howard soon closing. Still currently open but in process of selling all their chotskies. If you're local and want one last trip better hurry....

Spent many a night at Gulliver's. Jerry would greet us at the door like he had never seen us before, even though we were there 2-3 times a week. I really enjoyed their deep dish and believe it compared favorably with the more famous options available now

You may hear my howl of pain from the West Coast about 3 hours after I post this considering the speed of sound compared to speed of signal processing using fiber optics. A Pizza and pitcher at Gulliver’s was the antidote to a difficult exam or difficult relationship and a place to celebrate a win on those rare occasions the Cats were victorious. It has probably been almost 50 years since my last deep dish there, but somehow I figured there would always be one more.
If I lived in a hundred mile radius I would visit tomorrow for sure.

Some of my best time while at NU in the '70s were spent at Gullivers.

Started going there regularly in the early 70's and after leaving Chicago, whenever I came in for games I would bring some pizza home for my wife and me. When Jerry died the quality of the pizza went down a bit IMO. We eventually started going to Lou Malnatti's, and have stayed with Lou's ever since. The store on Howard was truly unique though, and a real trip.

Other than a Wildcat loss, the most terrible news. Spent untold hours there with friends & dates after games, Sundays, whenever, with a deep dish & a pitcher from 66-70. Almost always still stopped there when in Evanston for a game or other NU event. The chandelier collection was unbelievable.

I do like Malnatti's but Lou's doesn't have the atmosphere or memories of Gulliver's except before the Game Day NU/OSU game 6-7 years ago, Gary Barnett was at the next table as he was doing the game on radio for Westwood One. He was most gracious to everyone who came by to disturb his dinner.
BTW, not sure I ever knew why Gulliver's was named Gulliver's but will surely miss it.
Funky place close by to Gulliver's in those days at Western & Howard was the Pickle Barrel with pitchers & peanuts in the shell where everyone threw the shells on the floor. It closed many years ago.

Wow, I spent 7 years on campus two to three decades ago and I never even heard of this place. Only place down that way that I ever went to was PM Club and the Deuce.

It sounds like you were on campus after the loosening and then lifting of the beer and booze restrictions in Evanston.

You mean you never went to the Gold Coin (aka Cold Groin) which was basically kitty-corner?

Great place for pizza and beer before the end of the Dry Ages. I especially enjoyed the maritime themed motifs they featured everywhere when I ate there as a kid.

With so much pizza competition - both low and high end - I often wondered how they survived all these years in that location: establishments like Biddy Mulligans and Queens Liquor Store mostly vanished upon the passing of Frances Willard's legacy.

No. Biddy Mulligan’s did not vanish.

Queens, I don’t know about, but there was Jarvis Liquors and Foremost Liquors.

Biddy Mulligans died a long, slow death, but it did, in fact, vanish:

Queens Liquors operated not far from Gullivers on Howard Street, catering mostly to the underage crowd (i.e., high school aged kids from Evanston).
Wow. I had no idea it brought in such great musicians. I lived across the street from Biddy's in the mid 70's and could listen to the music pretty well when I opened my apartment windows. The music was generally good to hear, but the street noise after midnight could get pretty annoying for those who wanted to sleep.

Gulliver's was a fun place for pizza and beers, but I am one of the few guys who preferred the Big Pickle - good burgers and great fries. We cannot forget The Inferno and Yesterday's, though the latter always smelled like cleaning fluid and too many middle-aged Evanstonians ate there. It improved in the late '80s and '90s. Biddy's was great for live music when we did not want to make the hike down to the blues joints on Lincoln Ave. Good memories all.

There's still one in Oakbrook Terrace as far as I know. I'm not sure if they'll be closing too, and it's about ten years since I ate there last.

Aging Booster . . . aren't we all. Health permitting, may we continue to be.

Sorry to hear this news. Think last time was there was '06 or '07 with my now departed dad before an IU/NU hoops game. Still recall the great nacho tray we had.

Spent a lot of time here in the 90's. Even had our rehearsal dinner here, in the room to the far right, I think, in '94. I recall having to spend quite a bit of time telling our out of town guests where they could and couldn't park around here too. It was often not clear.

Great pizza and lots of other offerings. Wasn't the owner in the 90's a Purdue guy?

Never heard of it either (seems like an interesting place to get grub/pizza), but then again, only went to that area (the Deuce) a couple of times.

Spent most of my sojourns to Chicago bars further south - on Halsted or even the bars on Rush.

Never went to popular spots in Evanston like The Keg or Dave's Italian Kitchen either (not sure if I missed out).

Heard the Davis St. Fish Market closed some time ago - really liked their seafood stew.

The Davis St. Fish Market was a must stop for us when visiting sons attending NU or going back for reunions. They served a Creole seafood gumbo that may well have been the same referenced dish.

It was also the best place to get a Maine Lobster west of Boston’s Legal Seafoods.

Truly missed.

I bartended at Biddy's while a Grad student and fraternity RA 79-80. Great bands but my favorite night was meeting Belushi and Aykroyd during their Blues Brothers filming.
They came in a few times for "research". Aykroyd gave me the best tip I ever got there.

At this point only the antiques on Howard are for Sale. Yes, the building, lot are for sale and not the name. Btw, the Liquor License was just renewed for the Howard Street Location for another 365-days and is non-transferable. Also, No Oakbrook isn't closing
