The threads about Super Bowl and NFC halftime shows got me thinking. We have a lot of guys on the board tht are very interested in music it seems so I wanted to have a discussion. I started collecting LP's about a year ago and have come to discover a whole bunch of music that I had never heard before (obviously not surprising).

You have can pick one album that you consider the greatest of all time. What is it?

Appetite for Destruction, Back in Black, Son Volt's Trace, Buffett A1A are the ones that pop to the top of my mind of just all around great albums that I could live with forever. THis used to be a drunk discussion we'd always argue over, I need to remember what else is on my list. I have a turntable too, and love going to Half Priced Books and getting albums for $4.

Slight hijack: Sturgill and Avetts at Red Rocks in July. Sturgill got a grammy nod, and signed a major record deal

My friends and I did this last year. A list of top 50 albums of all time. It is really hard and some were all over the place. My top 10ish looked like

1) appetite for destruction - gnr
2) avenged sevenfold - hail to the king
3) ride the lightning - metallica
4) somewhere in time - maiden
5) permission to land - the darkness
6) no more tears - ozzy
7) operation mindcrime - queensryche
8) master of puppets - metallica
9) dance of death - iron maiden
10) sting of the tail - the scorpions
11) fame / fame monster - lady gaga

It is a coin toss between Black Crowes- Southern Harmony and the Musical Companion and Blind melon- Self titled. But if I HAD to choose one, I'd say the edge goes to The Crowes.

Started collecting a year ago, huh? Welcome to the club. Your social status will be forever changed from here on out. Sounds like you are learning what a lot of people miss: Music that sounds good and music that sounds good on vinyl are two different things. Since I've had my turntable, I've rediscovered music that I long ago burned out on. Not to mention discovered a lot of artists I would never have given a nod to otherwise. Some classics I'd never paid attention to came my way as well. Isaac Hayes- Black Moses is one of my favorites in my collection.

Led Zepplin IV
Black Crowes: Shake Your Money Maker

Dwight Yoakam: Last Chance for 1000 Years(I can't explain it. I'm not even a country music fan)

Jackson Browne - Running On Empty

Van Morrison - Moondance

Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead

Big Head Todd - Sister Sweetly

(I can't decide between these 4).

...now I think I wanna replace Grateful Dead with Tom Petty / Wildflowers. That CD burned a hole in my dash back in the day.

Yoakam could be classified more as California rockabilly, so that may explain it for you. After some early success, he never fit the Nashville mold, and almost has an indie-type following today.

Most of the stuff I listed was newer because the stuff I listened to in high school and college I either outgrew or just got plain burned out on.

If I'd pick just one, it'd be the untitled album by Led Zeppelin (IV). I just think it's probably the most influential album by one of the most influential bands of all time... in my opinion anyway.

If I were to add a few more of my personal favorites, I'd add:

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Widespread Panic - Space Wrangler or Til the Medicine Takes
The Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach

Steve Forbert - Alive On Arrival. GREAT album and he's from Meridian. Poor guy was slapped with the label of being "the next Bob Dylan" and could never recover.

There's a lot of stuff I listened to in high school and college that is crap now to me. I found some old CDs I had burned on my computer and they were not good.

Top five (excluding soundtracks, greatest hits, or compilations of any kind) in no specific order:

Habits Old and New - Hank Williams, Jr.
7 Day Theory - Tupac Shakur
Licensed to Ill - Beastie Boys
Who Made Who - AC/DC
Appetite for Destruction - Guns n Roses

Honorable mention:
Eminem Show - Eminem
The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
The Chronic - Dr Dre

Oddly enough, this made me realize that I don't have a lot of 'original albums' from some of the artists I would consider 'favorites' (like Frank Sinatra or Elvis or Waylon Jennings)

Top 5 from a prog rock mind:

Lateralus - Tool
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
Red - King Crimson
White Pony - Deftones

TONS of great metal and country/bluegrass that didn't make the list. Old Crow Medicine Show is really growing on me.

Whitest thread ever.

All good picks though. I would throw old school Beastie Boys on there somewhere.

This is

an impossible question. I have times where I go through different genres. I never can consistently say "X" is my favorite album.

Saw a sealed copy of this one over the weekend. Guy claimed it was the 1975 pressing but I dunno. He wanted $200 for it which seemed like a decent price if it was an original pressing

This for sure. There are certain things that digital sounds better but others that a physical record will win all day. Perfect example, also my favorite album, is T. Rex Electric Warrior. I've got a first pressing and it just sounds so much better than an iPod.

Listened to that one this morning, and I'll see them at Shaky Knees in May. I wish they would just play that album through.

is Close to the Edge. Nothing compares to this artistically.

A few others that I listened to over, and over, and over again were

Ziggy Stardust

Led Zeppelin IV

The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East
