OT: Charcoal grill tailgate policy

Hey guys, random question -

I usually just do a sub & chips tailgate, but I wanted to take things up a notch this weekend by actually grilling.

I had originally planned to use my Weber Q (propane) grill, but apparently only charcoal grills are approved (no open flame).

Question: What do you do with the charcoal when you are done? The stadium website says you place them in designated yellow bins, but how does that work? Do you have to wait for them to cool? Do you add water?

Sorry for the noob question -- I should have paid more attention to what other people were doing.

You misunderstand "open flame". Gas grills are allowed.
Not sure if charcoal is allowed. In the past they had special barrels for charcoal disposal but I think those have been gone for many years.

• Charcoal grills are the only approved grills in tailgating lots. Charcoal should be discarded in specially marked yellow barrels located throughout the parking lots.

Somebody goofed on the rules page.
90% of tailgates have propane grills, just as they always have.
I use a weber Q.

Oddly enough, I had called SHI Stadium which directed me to Rutgers ticketing and they stood behind what was on the website.

btw - toward the ed of the Fred Grunninger era, charcoal grills were banned. This was after a car fire in one of the lots.
People complained, and when Bob Mulcahy took over as AD, they began allowing charcoal grills again, and added the yellow barrels for charcoal disposal.
Propane grills have been allowed the entire time.

One more interesting related tidbit - few years ago they had officials coming around inspecting with LP-Leak detectors. I had my grill connected to my RV propane supply with a hose. All was fine, but it was intersting that they felt the need to do that.

I've been using the red Coleman tailgate grill for years, which uses the little green propane canisters. Look around the lot and you see them all over the place.

Great little grill for games.

We've (and I'm sure many others) have used those in the past.
Obviously they mean something bigger like a fire pit/solo stove

How are propane grills banned? Is that a new update for this year?
I've never seen anyone get in trouble for a propane grill.

Most people to gas grills. They are ubiquitous. Plenty of charcoal also. The disposal bins aren't always there so we find a corner to dump our coals and water them when done. It's just some ash at that point.

IMO, the rules are on the site to cover their asses for insurance purposes. We've been tailgating for 20 years, usually for 5 plus hours every game and have used a Weber Q for most of that time. I've never seen anyone get in trouble for using a propane grill. 90% of the grills around the tailgates are the WeberQ, the similar Coleman model, or the flat top campground one, all use the small green propane tanks.

I have the Weber Q and bought the hose to connect from a 20lb tank as the green bottles were getting so expensive. $16 on Amazon and works great. I have gas for my grill at home but have an outdoor propane fire pit so I use the tank from that.

I'm the ******* in Scarlet who smokes out like 10 rows of cars with his charcoal fire starter at the start of each tailgate. It's actually my favorite part of tailgating. At one point my grill looks like a new pope has been announced.

I just dump it on the ground and soak the coals, never see a yellow bin in Scarlet but they used to be in blue and we would dump them in there.

I got the valve which attaches to a 20 lb tank which I use to refill the green bottles. Cost $7-8. I have 10 bottles or so that I keep in rotation - for the grills and camp stove at the tailgate as well as for my son at school.

I was surprised to see a turkey fryer going at a tailgate during the Michigan game. They were using it to boil water and not fry a turkey though. I thought they were not allowed period, I wanted to do a turkey a few years back and was told absolutely not.

I may or may not have been responsible for setting a few grass fires with charcoal back in the 80s. I do not take responsibility for any car fire though

Yes. But I have only seen 1-2 scalpers at games recently and they are in the lots closer to the stadium.

I put mine in the freezer before refills.. do you do that too,? Let's you get about 15% more into the refill but never quite the original 1lb.
Have to pull the pressure release valve a bit to get to completely full.

Earlier this yr in Sept I had coal's fall into grass and flame. Luckily my wife saw and I was able to stomp it out. Best way is to let cool during game and dump on grass or at home.

Not worried about someone or some kid burning themselves from unattended coals? Why not just bring some water and put it out when done?

But a better move is to get a thin phillips head screwdriver, fill as normal until it stops, take it off the valve, then use the screwdriver to push the canister valve down and release the compressed air. Going that way, I get between 1lb 4oz and 1lb 6oz in a canister. And, yes, I've measured it with the kitchen scale I use for baking.

Nice and Interesting. I saw that you should pull the valve. I did that and it wouldn't shut right and leaked everything. I'll try your method.
It's so much cheaper and who wants to keep tossing those tanks?!

We fried turkeys a few times but that was years ago, early 2000’s. Cleanup was too messy, never did it after that season.
During this same time, we had mini campfires for the late afternoon starts too. One of our tailgate crew was a member of the NBFD so I felt pretty safe.
No one paid us any attention.

The real surprise in this thread to me is that there are actual rules on grills. Have never seen them and have used a propane grill of some sort for the last 82 years.
