OT: Charcoal grill tailgate policy

Nice and Interesting. I saw that you should pull the valve. I did that and it wouldn't shut right and leaked everything. I'll try your method.
It's so much cheaper and who wants to keep tossing those tanks?!

Yeah, it's much cheaper. I was told never to mess with that valve, so I've never tried using it.

I got the valve which attaches to a 20 lb tank which I use to refill the green bottles. Cost $7-8. I have 10 bottles or so that I keep in rotation - for the grills and camp stove at the tailgate as well as for my son at school.

Why bother refilling the bottles ? Use the 20lb tank with propane tree and hoses.

Yeah, I keep them in the freezer. But a better move is to get a thin phillips head screwdriver, fill as normal until it stops, take it off the valve, then use the screwdriver to push the canister valve down and release the compressed air. Going that way, I get between 1lb 4oz and 1lb 6oz in a canister. And, yes, I've measured it with the kitchen scale I use for baking.

I was surprised to see a turkey fryer going at a tailgate during the Michigan game. They were using it to boil water and not fry a turkey though. I thought they were not allowed period, I wanted to do a turkey a few years back and was told absolutely not.

I had a turkey fryer going at the Michigan game - used it to fry chicken. This has been done before, it's all good.

Correct. The valve that the adapter/regulator plugs into is the one you want to push down on while the cannister is upright. This will release the pressurized air and free up more space to hold the propane. If you start seeing white stuff coming out, that's the propane and you should stop. You will definitely smell the propane as you're releasing the gas, so don't worry about that. But after the first filling, you'll need to hold that valve down for a bit to get the air out.

Yup. Pretty familiar with this stuff. Thanks for the tip. Toting a few of these smaller one around is so much easier. And if you can get that much in them they'll more than last.
There's a spot near my son's house in pa that still fills a 20lb tank for $10!! So that's like fifty cents a bottle vs. now $7 in the stores.

Fracking . The one place I go to says they have always sold it for 10 and they always will for customer loyalty. They make their money on commercial accounts. My son's lake house has three 500lb tanks.

I saw one in the blue lot yesterday. No chance it’s allowed. My group ten years ago had a small duraflame in an aluminum turkey tray in a sparsely populated black lot and they were on us quick to put it out.

Needing a warming fire is a pretty uncommon use case these days, but in years past I was very successful with one of these Char-Griller portable grills. Fuel it with mesquite wood to make the best damn roast leg of lamb you'll ever have, then after you're done cooking just keep throwing wood into it. As long as you keep the fire reasonably low you won't have a problem with the cops. If they come by, just close the lid.

These suckers are handy when you can't have or don't want a wood fire. The rectangular ammo can package is much better for packing in a loaded vehicle.

We are in Blue as well and there was a group in our isle that had a Solo Stove going. The cops walked past it and said nothing, if I knew this was going to be acceptable I would have brought mine. I guess I should have just done it, "Its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission"

• Charcoal grills are the only approved grills in tailgating lots. Charcoal should be discarded in specially marked yellow barrels located throughout the parking lots.
