The real talent behind the Beach Boys. Like this video as it shows Brian directing the Wrecking Crew on Sloop John B. probably some of the best Studio Musicians in the world at the time.
RIP

An amazing talent. Supposedly been suffering from dementia. RIP Brian!
Yea just heard the same. Amazing to hear how many musicians credit The Beach Boys and Brian specifically with influencing their musical career.

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night,
just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning,
It's a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate- how'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue,
cause right now I'm

Chorus:
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.

So I'm lying here, just starting at the ceiling tiles.
and I'm thinking about what to think about.
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile,
and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
because I am

Chorus

And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox,
wondering where the hell all the love has gone.
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun,
and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun."

Chorus

I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
and though I was very heavy,
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me because I'm

Chorus

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night.
Just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

Very sad day for me !

This one hurts really bad !

I’m a huge music fan and Brian was and always has been my Music Idol since the mid 70s.

I was lucky to see Brian and The Beach Boys lord knows how many times.

Loved Brian’s solo band and always said to myself after departing a show that I hope this isn’t the last time I see him perform.

Seeing The Beach Boys at Central Park in 1977 and their 50th anniversary tour will always be highlights for me !

Seeing Brian and the Beach Boys sing such classics as Surf s Up / Please let me Wonder / G-D only Knows etc lightens my day !

Loved his music and many of the albums that never had commercial success such as 15 Big Ones / Beach Boys Love You etc.

He was a gentle soul who is in a better place now and hopefully he’s harmonizing with his brothers and all the deceased music icons in heaven !

RIP Legend, Pet Sounds is a masterpiece.

His brother Dennis Wilson was associated with Charles Manson and his girls.

Saw The Beach Boys and Chicago at MSG in the mid 70’s. Each did a set and then did another together. The stage was so crowded but the music was amazing! They’re all dropping like flies. Soon the music of the 60’s and 70’s will all be cover bands. And Keith Richards, God bless him, is still walking upright.

Even though I always heard how competing bands revered "Pet Sounds," I never took the time to learn about and appreciate the greatness of the Beach Boys until after I read a book about The Wrecking Crew a couple of years ago, which included a lot of discussion about the genius of Brian W.

One of the greats. Rest in Peace, man...

I love this version of Love and Mercy.

A somewhat sad ending for many music lovers who followed the Beach Boys history and their musical careers. Ironically Wilson was only several days shy of 83 and actually beat the actuaries age prediction for a US male. His drug addiction while hiding in his “ room” more than likely caused his late life dementia. Also Wilson abused food which tells you even with $$$$ you can’t prevent the inevitable happening. Death waits for no one. RIP … guess you’ll be finally sailing on the Sloop John B with grandpa.

Another OT dead thread. My question is, who will be the first to start an OT thread about their own death?

Watched a recent documentary on the Beach Boys (IIRC via Disney+) and it was well done. Their music is iconic and personal stories pretty amazing.

"Wilson was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and mild bipolar disorder. Since 1965, he regularly experienced auditory hallucinations in the form of disembodied voices. Wilson referred to the voices as "heroes and villains" that contributed to "a life of scare"...According to Wilson, he was introduced to recreational drugs by an acquaintance during a Beach Boys tour. His hallucinations emerged early in 1965, about a week after his first time using psychedelics" Wiki

Schizophrenically inclined people can be very creative around the edges. A lot of thoughts and ideas can come together in ways that are unusual but can be genuinely artistic.

The "hallucinations" can be quite gory and shocking. I've known people to see bodies hanging from trees, disemboweled and faceless people standing near beds upon awakening, grotesque phantoms in grocery aisles and such. A girl I knew couldn't take it anymore and jumped out a window. A lot of these people dont seem crazy and can be at major universities studying . While speaking to you they might see a dead baby behind you

RIP to a talented musician. Not unusual for creative artistic types , especially musicians to suffer from mental illness/anxiety. Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Bruce Springsteen among others suffered from bipolar (manic depression or other forms ).

A lot of musicians of that era suffered from dissociative disorders of various types. They also had high rates of family members connected to the military and intelligence communities. You’d enjoy this (several chapters related to the Wilsons)…

I would actually compare him more to Syd Barrett. Unfortunately the latter never regained his musical abilities.
