For those of us who are not intelligent drinkers...

Key Differences:

FeatureWhiskeyBourbon
IngredientsAny grainAt least 51% corn
OriginGlobal (Scotland, Ireland, etc.)United States
AgingVaries by typeNew, charred oak barrels
FlavorWide range of flavorsSweet, rich, caramelized notes
Legal RequirementsDepends on styleStrict U.S. laws regulate bourbon

Summary:

All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Bourbon's distinct sweetness and specific production requirements set it apart as a unique and cherished style of whiskey.

My experience is that smokers usually prefer scotch and ryes to bourbon. May be way off.
JMO but the type of cigar is the driver more than the type of whiskey. If it's a sweet cigar then I want a scotch or rye, but if it's an earthy or nutty flavor then I'd prefer to have it with a bourbon.

Haven’t lit a cigar since I got engaged 45 or so years ago. Ahhh the good old high school days of Swisher Sweets ….

Swisher sweets are ghetto as ****. Get you a good Cuban or a Macanudo. I buy these mini cigars dipped in cognac. Delicious after a meal.

No thanks. Gimme a little warm caramel chocolate brownie with a scoop of ice cream after my meals. Goes great with bourbon

I was walking through a Costco the other day and what do I see for $44.99?

Had to buy one at that price. It's $145.99 at a local liquor store when you can find it.

Nice find. Still haven't come across that one yet. Heard there was a big fight at a Costco out here when they had 10+ cases sitting out along with the 10 year old version.

Just finished up a bottle of this. Have 5 more in the cabinet waiting for dingle to pull the trigger on it.

Yep! I was shocked to see it. They also had the 10 year but I just could not talk myself into buying all 3.

Meh. Woodford double oaked is just fine for my taste buds and I can get all of that I want. It’s gin and tonic season now. Have to ward off malaria and muscle cramps.

Picked up the new Old Fitzgerald 7 year. Also might have made a mistake passing on an 18 year Redemption Ancients bourbon that was selling for $300 a bottle. Cask strength was only 104 proof so I figured I'd pass knowing EC 18 year goes for around half that price. Reviews are hard to find as it is a brand new offering. I guess we'll see.

Do you guys notice that price does or doesn't impact the taste/flavor?

I never really buy anything all that expensive so I have no idea.

Absolutely. I made the mistake of buying some crap off the bottom shelf because it had a cool bottle. Tasted like burnt tires. Stick to the 50 dollar and above bottles.

Taste is subjective. Price will never be an indicator of flavor. Price reflects the scarcity, production cost and market demand. Many people like high proof, older whiskies which will be more expensive because not many barrels make it >12 years, each barrel produces less whiskey due to the age and high proof (not watering down product to 80 or 90 proof) and the distillery has to recoup their cost of storage and the time between when it was made and when they get to sell. That said, many of the current prices reflect nothing more than the popularity of rare whiskey and the distilleries are jacking up MSRP so they make the money as opposed to the people reselling their rare bottles on the secondary market….ie rather than sell for $100, they’ll charge $300 because they know the secondary will market has been charging $350.
