I just started testing my blood sugar this morning because of how I've been feeling... I tested 137 this am and was wondering if anybody that has blood sugar issues could give advice on diet and whatnot... I don't have insurance since I'm self employed and have paid put of pocket for the last 7-8 years... TIA

Can tell you this.. you should check first thing in the morning or on a fast. The minute you eat anything with carbs they will spike. Try and stay away from useless carbs like chips and breads.. i know tough to do.. but you get used to it. The atkins diet is really good and you can cheat a little bit as well with it. Your numbers are actually good..id kill for those..good luck

I really cut down on my carbs big time. Limited bread and starchy foods like potatoes. No more sugar soda. Added veggies and more meat. Caused me to loose lbs but if I cheated it would spike my blood sugar. I found that if I added 1/2 hour of good exercise (weight lifting and cardio) daily. It really allowed some cheat room.

Here was the guide I was given. <120 on the morning fast. <140 2 hours after your evening meal. I can keep mine about 90-120. Although you may miss a few things. God if I could have a Mountain Dew Heavy, I might be in heaven.

My wife has diabetes. Her target scores are 120 in the morning and 160 in the evening. 137 morning is a little high but not crazy high. Agree with everyone else, whatever you can do to cut carbs will make the biggest difference. You might want to track what you eat for a little while to see which foods really make it spike. Chips and potatoes are bad for my wife, but pasta and bread not so much. And yes, regular exercise will help a lot.

My target is between 80-150 I take a slow release insulin in the evening, was on metformin for 15 years but couldn’t get my A1C down to 7, once my dr started me on insulin I feel so much better. My A1C was is now 7.1 plus I use the free style libre lot easier to monitor your blood sugar. For me it’s difficult to exercise because arthritis sucks I do what I can

lower the carbs, eat less plants. 120+ is prediabetic. My resting blood sugar is 74.

Cut out ALL sugary sodas!!! I used to drink Mountain Dew like there was no tomorrow. You have no idea how hard it was for me to say no to Mountain Dew.

I recently cut my carbs by a third at meals/snacks with great results...now 50 carbs per meal and 15 per snack while adding more protein. I exercise 5-6 times a week at a minimum of 45 minutes per day...long walks, kick boxing or playing basketball. Spreading out exercise through out the day can also have a positive impact on blood sugar levels. Losing any extra weight can also have a positive impact.

Exercise has never been an issue for me...it has always been what I eat.

Good luck!!

137 on a fasting glucose is diabetic. Another glucose reading is required to diagnose diabetes, but 1 reading at that level definitely shows an impaired ability to handle sugar. Some others have mentioned getting your A1C checked, and that is definitely good advice. That basically shows what your blood glucose has been on average over the last 3 months instead of just one reading. If cost is an issue, there probably are some free/low cost health clinics in your area that you could use. You'd definitely want to know this information, but other advice on this thread is pretty good as far as what to do first. Little more exercise a day is a good start (3x a week for 30 mins) and cutting out some of the sugars and carbs.

I agree. Sugar spikes are an emergency trauma to the body and the body needs insulin to bail us out. The resulting insulin spike leaves us hypoglycemic and the daily roller coaster begins. Our entire volume of blood has 1 teaspoon of sugar dissolved in it. Imagine what happens when we eat 50+ grams multiple times throughout the day. Pancreas hates you. :)

The modern High-Carb diet really is an experimental diet and the terrible results show for themselves.

I currently only eat carbs in the form of lactose from dairy foods. I stay with meats, eggs, cheese, cream, sour cream, milk, fish, butter, etc. No plants for me.

Seems a bit high. My wife is a nurse, she suggest going to the doc and getting checked out. Here is a guide, technically 139 after fasting is Diabetic. Hopefully you can lower with diet and exercise. If still high after a few months of doing that, definitely go get checked out. I went to doc for first time last year and mine was 112 , Doc wanted me to diet and exercise and come back in a year. I have been checking it and have got it down into the 90s now.

Docs have different requirements for people with diabetes and those who don't. People who already have it, their goal is just to control it from getting out of hand. 137 isn't horrible for someone who has diabetes, but pretty high for someone who doesn't. Nothing life threatening of course, but he needs to get it down to below 100 for sure below 120.

A fasting glucose over 126 is diabetic, otherwise yeah I agree with everything.

Diet and excercise would be good.. i dont know how active you are but the excercise part is helpful as well.. probabl
Your primary care doctor can check a hemoglobin a1c which will reflect your glucose control over the last few months. A much more meaningful value than a single random number.
My last check was down to 10.2.. un real but i dont have insurance right now because the market is a joke and im not paying 1k a month for them to not cover me for most of my diabetes.. i really am trying my best to get to a dr visit every 3 mos tho and trying to manage it..

On a side note my 5 year old has type1.. just a warrior princess through it all.. she was diagnosed at 1.. has a pump and adding her dexcom has been an absolute blessing. Praying for a cure for her... i think mines hopeless but she has a lot of life left in her!!

Thats why i do the dr visits. They actually give me free 3 mos supply of novalog that has helped.. like i said its down from over 11. ..no joke they originally diagnoaed me with type 2... after metfoemin didnt do a thing for my a1c...i saw a specialist who when i walked inglto the door said i needed to be on insulin. I have maybe 20 lbs to lose but wasnt a typical overweight beer belly kinda guy.. i too was all about the dew.. now just do the unleaded. Anyways im trying that and those samples get me to my next appt.. which is every 3 mos..
I actually sell supplemental insurance is the irony

How many units are you taking?
I have to spread it out but i will take usually 15-20 in the am... i should be taking that every meal. In all honesty i need to just bite the bullet and get incy.. there is alot more to it than whats on the surface tho.

Ive gotten very good at taking care of my daughters disease..and have learned alot about it over the years.

there is a growing interest that type 1 could be an "autoimmune" condition. Many plants have defensive chemicals that constantly trigger and upset the immune system.

Different compounds affect insulin differently.
Sugar/Starch and even some sugar alcohols will spike your insulin.
Protein is second and only mildly increases insulin.
Fat pretty much doesn't trigger it at all.

Here is the catch:
If you combine carbs with protein or fat, it spikes insulin even more than them by themselves.(meat and potatoes)
If you combine protein with fat, the fat actually dampens the insulin response. (meat and butter)

It is the carbs.

I’m surprised your endocrinologist doesn’t have you taking a long lasting one like levemer or. Tresiba

"Cut out ALL sugary sodas!!! I used to drink Mountain Dew like there was no tomorrow. You have no idea how hard it was for me to say no to Mountain Dew."

Straight diet Dew is unbearable to me. Hate the after-taste. But, I have found that I can go with fountain Dew, about 1/3rd regular and 2/3rds diet in my cup, and its doable. Cuts by 2/3rds the amount of my sugar intake from pop (one per day). If you can handle a little sugar, beats giving up my Dew fix altogether. Disclaimer - my blood sugar levels are still good at 57 so I can still get away with some pop (knock on wood, annual visit to the Doc coming up).

The good news is that Metformin is cheap. It's one of the first line meds used for Type 2 and works well for most people. It is on the $3 or $4 list at many pharmacies.

I echo previous suggestions. Get a A1c drawn; bigger picture of overall control. Start watching the carbs; sugars are carbs. Walk a minimum 20 minutes, several times a week.

137 is over guidelines, but only one number. For good information, check out the American Diabetes Association. They have great information on their website.

I just started Freestyle Libre and it is great. Can test on the fly and see the trending of the blood sugars. I scan with my phone, so dont even need to carry the regular scanner around

I cut out sugar, potatoes, breads starches, diet drinks, lost 30 lbs, cut fasting glucose from 118 to 83 non-fasting, and hemoglobin A1c from 6.2 to 6.8 range down to 5.6 never been on metformin or any other meds. I did some other things, also, but complicated to explain but I do exercise at target heart rate at LEAST 75 minutes/week and often more. If I feel my blood sugar going up (and I can feel it and get some blurring vision, I can drop it as much as 60 points just standing up and doing 85 to 100 moderately deep squats.

it works for me at least, good luck, GBR

137 is excellent.

If you don't have access to meds, try a cinnamon supplement and cut back on the carbs and all refined sugar, in general.

If you are concerned about your blood sugar, start testing regularly. You can buy a good cheap set from Walmart called reli-on.

Anything under 180 2 hour after eating is good. Same for a wakeup fasting reading.

You can also order an A1C blood test, may be a little pricey without health insurance but it will give you an avg blood sugar reading for your last 3 months. Anything under 7 is good. Over that is trending toward the diabeetus.
