Monk, don't forget your unassisted triple play in that game.Yes I hit a grand slam off of Satchel Page and no hit the Indy Clowns.

Outstanding!Yes I hit a grand slam off of Satchel Page and no hit the Indy Clowns.
The only negative to Jackie Robinson was that it ended the negro leagues..They used to draw a lot of African Americans to the stadiums where white people didn't and couldn't patronize them.So here we are 70 years later and most black players are Latino. But yet Mookie and Judge and Stanton are at the top of the sport.
Barry Bonds Griffey Jr.Hammering Hank the Willies ..I know they don't play baseball in the cities anymore but that can change . Baseball needs to market itself much much better.

I played against a couple of all black basketball teamsMy father, who had a big league bat, but not a strong enough arm, worked out with the St. Louis Browns. The guy that had the locker next to him was Satchel Page.
Speaking of hard elbows...Had a friend who played his college hoops at Kean. He and some of his socially-conscious teammates put together a hoops team that played non-travel teams — they played games against prison all-star teams. According to him, he took some hard fouls in those games.
Played against the Sing Sing baseball team. Very good. They beat us something like 8-6 & we were pretty damn good. The stands from home plate to the left field line were packed shoulder to shoulder with inmates. They rooted & hooted against their team & for the visitors as a matter of custom. We were the only ones in the stands on the right field side--in a wire cage cut into the bleachers with a guard & his shotgun. The guard rode with us in the black mariah from the parking lot to the club house & was with us in the locker room when we changed. Altogether very relaxing.Had a friend who played his college hoops at Kean. With MLB it was a conscious decision to pull marketing funds out of the inner cites and into the Caribbean. Concurrently with the emergence of Michael Jordan, interest in baseball in the black community has declined. With all due respect, what does it matter what race or color a player is? The NBA used to have mostly white guys. Sports players is one of the few employees in society where the best guys get the jobs . No politics or bs, but can you help the organization win?
I took Bingo Long deep a few times.

I don't that that was his point. How many pick up baseball games do you think they play in NYC vs. Soccer or basketball? Its not an inner city sport like it used to be.With all due respect, what does it matter what race or color a player is? The NBA used to have mostly white guys. I don't think the investment thing matters unless MLB built facilities all over the cities. There isn't a osrk in America that doesn't have a bball court. All you need is 200 sq feet and a basket.Ok, I wasn’t sure of the point . Is the point there isn’t enough black baseball players because mlb doesn’t invest in inner cities?
If so, I guess the same argument could be made that there aren’t enough white basketball players because nba doesn’t invest in white neighborhoods.
Both sides sound ridiculous to me.
I think House of David also had a traveling basketball team.Years ago my Dad’s Staten Island semi-pro baseball team played against a team of bearded midwesterners who barnstormed as the House of David. Years later he played on a Park Ridge NJ softball team that played Eddie Feigner’s The King and His Court. I watched that softball game. Feigner was amazing.
I worked in the Newark Bd of EDUC. Recreation System for 34 years, starting in 1953.Baseball was really never a B1G inner city sport. It was HOOPS from morning to night.I don't that that was his point. # 9.No pics please.Isn’t @beaced about the only guy on here who could have played them???
Understand. But Newark didn't have 2 pro teams...I worked in the Newark Bd of EDUC. Recreation System for 34 years, starting in 1953.Baseball was really never a B1G inner city sport. It was HOOPS from morning to night.
I think you missed his point... if I understand it, he was saying that since cities generally have a high black population.. lack of baseball playing in cities is hurting the ability to produce black pro players from the USA.With all due respect, what does it matter what race or color a player is? The NBA used to have mostly white guys. Sports players is one of the few employees in society where the best guys get the jobs . No politics or bs, but can you help the organization win?
Do you mean the 1919 White Sox? There was no Negro League by that name though I could be wrong. However there was a Baltimore Black Sox and the Chicago team was called American Giants. My great grandfather played against the Chicago Black Sox
Now you sound ignorant. If you don't market the game to certain groups, especially those who are marginalized, it's not hard to figure that you will probably lose traction. The NFL and the NBA does a better job. To MLB's credit they saw the error of their ways created and the RBI program to reach the inner city.Umm yeah so who cares where mlb markets its game?
The best players will play, regardless of race
In those days baseball was THE game in Brooklyn.I worked in the Newark Bd of EDUC. Recreation System for 34 years, starting in 1953.Baseball was really never a B1G inner city sport. It was HOOPS from morning to night.

Sorry it was a joke. The White Sox that threw the series were called the Black Sox.Do you mean the 1919 White Sox? There was no Negro League by that name though I could be wrong. However there was a Baltimore Black Sox and the Chicago team was called American Giants.
What years did he play? He'll give me his name and I'll see what I can dig up on him.
I am talking about both participation and fan base. Growing up we played baseball just as much as we played basketball and football. That is not the case anymore. Baseball is now second to football in terms of revenue worldwide as it relates to sports leagues. It used to be #1.Ok, as far as marketing goes for fans I get that . A business wants as many paying customers as possible. But as far as the racial makeup of the leagues, I don’t get it . No one cares about the decrease of white players over the years in nba and nfl jobs.

I think you're still missing the point. All he's saying is due to lack of marketing to inner cities baseball is losing athletes to different sports. So potentially the Ken Griffey Jr. of today is playing football or basketball so baseball is losing out on that guy. His concern doesn't seem to be the racial makeup of the league he's concerned about just the loss of potentially great players.
