"Get out the brooms" is usually the phrase when one ball club is about to sweep another. How far back does that thought go?

The CIncinnati Red Stockings were Baseball's first all-professional team and was 81-0 between 1869 and into June of 1870 before losing to the Brooklyn Atlantics in front of 20,000. But before their last season together ended, they were defeated by the Chicago White Stockings 10-6 on September 7, 1870 who were so thrilled that......

"A full report was given of coverage of the the White Stockings’ defeat of the Red Stockings resulting in a celebration in Chicago with a parade including the players who wore diminutive red stockings from the button holes of their shirts and the carrying of a broom marching through the streets."

Source: September 13, 1870 Paterson (NJ) Daily Press

And for good measure the White Stockings kicked the Red Stockings in the pants again on October 13th by a score of 16-13.

Just wondering.

Answers to my "Major League" quiz of a couple of days ago:

1) What three former MLB players appeared in the movie? I'll give you the obvious one, Bob Uecker.

Pete Vuckovich and Steve Yeager. Vuckovich, a former pitcher with a very intimidating appearance, played the Yankee slugger Haywood. Yeager, former Dodger catcher, had a minor role as coach Duke Temple.

2) In what stadium were the baseball scenes shot? Hint: It wasn't Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

Milwaukee County Stadium. At the time of shooting, the Mistake by the Lake had football lines.

3) Dennis Haysbert, who played Pedro Cerrano, is now most frequently seen on TV in what role?

He's the Allstate guy. Not Mayhem, the other one with the deep voice. He has also had various TV roles.

4) At the time of movie filming, what was the actual top speed of a Charlie Sheen fastball (as claimed by Charlie Sheen)?

He claims (probably more like guesses) he threw steroid-aided 85.

5) Who played Willie Mays Hayes in Major League 2? Hint: It wasn't Wesley Snipes, who chose not to reprise his role in the sequel.

Omar Epps

6) What is the alternative ending which is available on the DVD? If you don't know, feel free to offer what you think a good alternative ending would have been.

Rachel Phelps did a face-turn at the end. She admitted to the team that she was financially strapped when her husband died, and had no choice but to cut payroll. To inspire her team to overperform, she made up a hoax about moving to Miami and all the rest. The ending did not test well and it was scrapped.

7) What famous (now, not then) actor/comedian/producer played an insult-hurling benchwarmer, whose scenes all wound up on the cutting room floor?

Jeremy Piven, who later starred in Entourage.

8) At the time of filming, how old was character actor Chelcie Ross, who played the veteran Vaseline-baller Eddie Harris?

47. Still younger than Jamie Moyer.

9) Which Major League actor played Bear Bryant in The Junction Boys?

Tom Berenguer

10) What was David Ward's (writer-director) motivation for creating the movie?

He was an Indians fan all his life, and simply wanted them to make the playoffs - if not in reality, then in art.

EXTRA CREDIT: Which Major League actor had previously toured for four years as a backup singer and musician with Olivia Newton-John?

Skip Griparis. He played Monty, the tongue-tied broadcasting sidekick of Harry Doyle. He was and still is known as a musician, comedian, and impressionist. Major League and Major League II are his only acting credits.

I found this all very interesting, hope you did too!

Yogi Berra
5 times during his career he had more home runs than strikeout for the season.

I used to like to sit in the left field stands in Fenway when the Yankees came to town.

When Elston Howard started to get more games at Catcher, Yogi would sometimes play Left Field. He would face at a 90 degree angle from the field, probably to keep the Wall in his peripheral vision. You could yell down to him and he was talkative. Fun times.

The best 'bad ball' hitter in baseball history.

Thinking back, Ellie hit a line drive that barely went over the Pitcher's glove, hit against the bump out at Center field and bounced back to the infielder running out to get the relay. Single for Ellie on the hardest line drive I ever saw.

Bobby Richardson would put his glove just over the second base for the throw from Ellie during infield practice. He wouldn't move the glove and if Ellie missed the glove the entire infield would laugh at him.

Bobby at second base, Red Sox runner on Second. Sharp 2 hopper to Bobby, he immediately throws a strike to Clete, runner OUT.

Mick hitting a hard bouncer between "Dr Strange-glove's" legs. Stole second, stole third, stole home. Yanks Win. ( I admit this is about 55 years ago, so I may be full of it.).

My Dad got into a small fist fight when Mick hit the HR that almost went out and hit the facade in RF. Dad had bet the guy in front of him that Mick would hit the HR and the other guy didn't want to pay. The beer bath the guy got at first may have started the fist fight.

The Boston Red Sox owner, Harry Frazee traded (or sold) Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance his Broadway show. Name the show.

Correct.... though some report it was "My Lady Friends" that was financed by the sale of Ruth. Its also been said that "My Lady Friends" was the straight version of the same play, but was transformed into the musical "No No Nanette".

More baseball movie trivia.

1994 Angels in the Outfield starred Danny Glover and Tony Danza.

1. What two former major league players appeared in the movie?
Hint: One of them was a former batting champion.

2. Which two future Oscar winners had minor roles as Angels players?

I know #2 is McConaughey and Adrien Brody. Not sure of #1.

OK try this. How frequently did New York teams appear in the eight World Series from 1949 to 1956? (Obviously the maximum is 16.)

New question: in the 1950’s only two teams that were not the Yankees won the AL pennant. What did they have in common.

I know that the two teams were the 1954 Cleveland Indians and the 1959 Chicago White Sox. They had the same manager, Al Lopez.

OK which brother teams were second and third in combined homers? The second place team is fairly obvious. Third place is less so, but guessable.

I was thinking of the Boyers.

Maybe Joe D. And his brothers.

Not sure the Uptons are near that level or the Alou’s.

Nobody seems to want to give this a shot on #1.
Mitchell Page, former 1B/DH for Oakland played the Angels first baseman.
The batting champion in the movie was Carney Lansford. He was the big hitter that Danza had to get out at the end of the movie.

I'm going to go off the track on the third pair because it's so out there. How about the Brett brothers? George hit over 300 HRs and his brother Ken was a very good hitting pitcher who I'm sure had a few during his career.

You got them all. The DiMaggios (there were three of them) were second with 573. The Uptons are third with 462. The Boyers are right behind with 444.

Fifth place is the Mays (Lee May and Carlos May) with 415.

The Alous lag behind with 269. There were three of them, but two of them didn't hit many homers. Matty had 31 and Jesus had 32.

Good answer but no. George did have 317 but Ken only had 10. Remember he spent a few years in the AL.

Another:
Name the only two players to lead the NL in homers for two different teams.
Hints: one was post 1970 the other pre 1950 (this guy actually led the league twice and was tied for the lead two other times)

Didn't realize that Lee and Carlos May were brothers. Forgot all about Carlos May. Played for the White Sox?

On the subject of family combinations:

1) Who are the only two father-son combinations to play on the same team at the same time? (Hint: For each of the two combinations, one member is in the Hall of Fame).

2) A Mets question: What is the only Met brother combination to play on the same team at the same time? (Hint: One of the two is in the Hall of Fame).

1) Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. (1990) & Tim Raines Sr. and Jr. (2001)
Griffey Sr. and Jr. even hit homeruns in the same game.

2) Tom Glavine and his brother Mike (2003)

Bravo! I didn't think anyone would remember Mike Glavine, and with good reason. I was sure that someone would answer that question with Robbie (HOF) and Sandy Alomar. Both played for the Mets but not at the same time.

Sandy Sr. played for the Mets in the '67 and later coach for the Mets ('05-'09)

Sandy Jr. played for the Mets in '07 while his father was one of the coaches. Sandy was at the end of his career by the time he put on a Mets uniform. Typical Mets. Get a player at the end of a great run.

Robbie played for the Mets in'02-'03. By the time he arrived in NY he was done as a player.

Just looked up Cloyd Boyer, the third and eldest of the three. Still alive at 92. One of 14! Children - all seven boys played pro ball, three making the big leagues. Cloyd pitchef for five years in majors (my brother had ands. Probably still has his card)

Robbie Alomar went 20/100/.336 with a .956 OPS and a Gold Glove the year before coming to the Mets. Then he donned the orange and blue and his skills immediately eroded.

The one saving grace was that this was not a Fregosi/Ryan deal. The key player that the Mets gave up to get R. Alomar was Alex Escobar. You may recall he was a five tool, can't miss prospect who ultimately did miss. Mets have had a few guys like that over the years. Lastings Milledge, Fernando Martinez, etc.
