My college roommate used to bring Colandras bread back every weekend. Looked forward to that hard crust bread. As you know, the quality of the bread was because of the quality of the water, which was because Newark was home to 5 breweries (or was it more?).

Fun fact, Newark's water supply is from a reservoir up in Cedar Grove. I ran the 3-mile loop around it several times back in the day.

Back in the day there was a bakery in Seaside where people would line up early to get their fresh baked rolls. Slap some pork roll and cheese and you were in heaven.

I worked for a few years on RT 46 in Wayne a few miles from the Colandras locations. The absolute best imo was buying an Italian or other hand made sub at their deli counter. Fresh Colandras bread made that morning and a custom sub hit the spot at lunch time.

Since moving to FL the Jersey foods I miss the most are Colandras bread and Santillos pizza in Elizabeth. We will never have that here. Of that I am sure.

Has anyone been lately? What a friggin mess! My wife and I went yesterday just to get out and I have to say for someone like myself who is very laid back and unsafe I felt very unsafe and it was the middle of the day. Garbage everywhere and the Bally’s casino we parked at just seemed very dirty. Out on the boardwalk within 5 minutes we see a drunk guy verbally assaulting a young, black policeman and making a loud scene His friends had to hold him back because it looked like he wanted to fight the cop. He was the only cop I saw on the boardwalk. After 30 minutes of just feeling like I was strolling through a war zone we paid our $10 to park and left
I was always a supporter of what could be in AC but they have fallen dramatically since I was there last in January
AC update for you. SMH. This place is garbage.

I live in southwest Florida. Getting good bread is an issue. Availability of variety of fresh fish is amazing ... tops NJ by a mile.

I see where one of the boardwalk venders suffered a possible heart attack when the vender was confronted by youths shop lifting. One of the youths arrested is 12, and he was armed with a knife. A girl 14 was also arrested. Article stated that this has been an on going problem on the boardwalk. The vendor is decease. I did not notice post above that refers to this incident prior.

What’s the savings $$$ living in Florida? I get the warmth advantage in Jan through April but how oppressive is the heat in the summer? Does it make you stay inside most of the day? You also are missing the bagels you used to get back home as well right?

I go back and forth from NJ to southwest FL. Spent plenty of time down here late June to late July. I go to the beach and sit by the water under an umbrella. Not oppressive at all. But I love the heat. Go on the water and go fishing. A little shade midday and you’re fine. Do exercise early AM. Quiet and peaceful for the summer unlike NJ.

For years I rented my southwest Florida condo in the summer months to NJ schoolteachers. They were living beachfront ($2K per month), free beach, and uncrowded bars and restaurants within walking distance. Most late afternoons include rain showers, but it’s a small price to pay at cocktail hours.

The only savings is rent/mortgage. Everything else is more expensive, especially gas. The benefit is the weather, which gets oppressively hot during the summer but stays nice throughout the Rest of the year.

Actually we have decent bagels now. Boiled and flash frozen in NY, shipped and baked in FL overnite for early am pickup. It works well.

A few sources for decent bread but only in specialty Italian delis nearby.

FL Pizza way below avg along w Italian food. Helped me lose weight by eating more fish and less pizza/Italian.

A/C is everywhere these days in Florida. The oppressive heat is not the issue it was for years.
Other savings are very low real estate taxes compared to NJ, no state income tax, fewer toll roads and bridges.

I agree that the dumping on AC is way overdone, but not surprising given the tone of this board. However, it was predictable that gambling couldn't be the only thing driving tourism to AC and that when other closer locations started offering gambling, AC would decline.

I still think NJ should try to recoup that income by opening a mega casino in Edison or Woodbridge, right near either the TPK/Pkwy or TPK/287 interchanges, so it would be the closest casino for 75% of people in NNJ/CNJ. I like that better than the Meadowlands or JC options I've heard, plus, I could almost walk there, lol. AC might be hurt a bit more, but at least most of the NJ/NYC $$ would stay in NJ.

South Jersey politicians will never let that happen. If this happens, it will kill AC for sure. Of course, that's short sighted now that you have nearby casinos at Parx, Mt. Airy and even Empire. The AC Casinos have no one to blame but themselves, all they focused on was gambling and never a tourist destination like Vegas is. They had the Beach, Boardwalk, Restauarants, Entertainment and would have had a captive audience in the East. I guess they figured if they kept it unsafe, people would just stay indoors and gamble, look how that's turning out? And not opening a Casino at the Meadowlands is a boom for PA and eventually will kill AC, such short sightness of our politicians, they get everything they deserved.

AC was really getting better until our govt shut stuff down

Hotel bookings were at an all-time high, the quality of women on the casino floors and in the bars was rising, the sportsbooks enhanced the atmosphere

Others in my age range can attest

Yeah, and Nevada has no state income tax, lower property taxes, and some seasons as well. There are definitely other options out there, but we only hear about one for some reason...

I’d guess you hear more about Florida than Nevada because Florida has miles of beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, and all kinds of recreational and entertainment venues.

Plus it’s less than a 3 hour plane ride if you want to come home to visit. The other poster with the Nevada comparison is rather clueless.

GOP largely controlled AC until the mid-70s. It was their shhhthole that needed casino gambling.

Perhaps we should amend the thought process to new jersey politicians.. include them all.

Uhm, No! NJ has been run by democrats non stop roughly since around the time of Woodrow Wilson. All of NJ’s major cities like Newark, Paterson, Jersey city, Trenton, Camden, and Atlantic City have been controlled by democrats for very long periods of time. They are all shitholes, that suck money and resources from the rest of NJ. The reason our taxes are the highest in the nation. Just like NYC when it took Republican Rudy Giuliani 8 years to transform NYC into a safe and clean city so too it will take republicans to turn around Atlantic City and NJ.

Kind of like Chris Christie sucking money and jobs dry on the state level during his 8 years.

And yes I still go to AC to see relatives but it’s Camden with a beach unfortunately.

Just be careful of the 'quality of women" in the Casinos. The story of the undercover NJSP woman Trooper arresting my friend for asking to 'rent' her for a short time is true.

Here's another; 6 of us limo down to AC. 5 of us on the craps 1 on blackjack. After 3 hours we are all up and we decide to leave. Get in limo heading home, but decide to stop at Mickey D's for food. Limo stops to make right turn. The blackjack guy sees a women and leaps out of car. Limo makes right into Mickey D's. We go thru and search the area for our guy. GAWN. Next day around noon a knock on door. Blackjack guy says can I borrow $ 200 bucks ? Cab outside the door, he had promised the cabbie 200 or the Rolex as collateral to get home to Pt P. He had taken the women to the local casino, maxed out his credit line there, then another, but got a room comped at the third. Woke up he was broke, his credit lines were maxed out and all he had was the Rolex on his wrist.

NJ cities are complete s-holes, no doubt. Dirty, high crime, awful schools, etc. Truly horrible places for families. As per AC, the history is a bit more mixed regarding leadership.

Dems have controlled AC with an iron grip since 1990. Over the past three decades the decline of the city has been stunning, both financially and in terms of QOL. The Dem mayor last decade was so corrupt and incompetent that an R was elected major for 1-term via a protest vote. However, with an all Dem council, he was a powerless figurehead almost instantly. So over the past 31 years:

Dem Mayor = 27 out of 31 years
Dem Council = 31 out of 31 years

Before this, AC had a mix of R and D leadership. I don't know the history pre-1990 well, so you will have to look up their performance.

FYI, the last elected Dem mayor went to jail for corruption. No surprise. LOL!

If you mean Downtown Jersey City and maybe the two luxury towers next to Journal Square PATH, yes. And they are starting to build luxury apartments in other parts now since Fulop and his developer friends ran put of space Downtown. While the rest of the city have been ignored, esp Greenville, those new building popping up will drive out homeowners and renters who can’t afford Downtown prices on Danforth Ave.
