No one is cutting Diaz. That is just stupid talk. BVW did not sign Cano to a deal but took him to get Diaz. To BVW- it makes sense as he was familiar with Cano and thought he could help for at least a couple of years. But somehow- the curse of the HOF 2b has come back to haunt the Mets. I am sure if Cano somehow found himself on another team, he would be .290 10 HR 40 rbi by now.
And who knew that Bruce and Swarzak were going to play this well? Bruce is having the year we hoped for last year. At the time of the Diaz trade, seemed good to get rid of him.
BTW- if Alonzo played on any other team, he would have won the AS vote in a landslide. I don’t think he is even in top 10
He is having one of the greatest first half’s ever by a rookie
We just suck

Bruce is a quality player, why did the Mets get rid of him? :)

In the numbers I saw (which may not have been final), Alonso was fifth in the initial voting - behind Bell, Rizzo, Freeman, and Muncy. Then Freeman won the final and I can't argue with that. He is totally deserving. First base is usually a very crowded position and this year is no exception.

Unless you're a nationally renowned rookie like Guerrero, it's hard for a rookie to be voted in. So many votes are cast before the casual fan even knows who you are. Alonso will get his due next year.

I really think that taking on the majority of Cano’s $$$ we had to dump one of our bigger contracts back to them. The guy is a consistent.250 30-35 hr hitter who had an off year because of PF...(I would have typed it out but too many letters. Lol but having that myself, when it flares, you are only half yourself but it can also go into remission at anytime.
What sucks- if we were minus Cano but had Bruce. McNeil would be every day 2B, we could have Conforto in CF Smith in left and Bruce and his 30+ HR in right and he is a decent RF.
But...can’t fault anyone from dumping him at the time

Wasn’t sure of the numbers and Freeman does deserve but it is a failure of Met fans that Alonso did not get 1 or 2.
Hell, Judge was even more of an unknown as a rookie.
My point is a real fan base would have stacked it like crazy. But like Rutgers, top guys have made the fan base not care.

Bob Raissman had an interesting observation, which resonates to RU supporters. His position is that Mickey Callaway has a job right now only because there was no video of his outburst last week. If there were video, neither he nor Vargas would have survived the incident.

Mets "sources" are reporting that the Mets organization is really pissed at Vargas, and that he will likely be unloaded by the 7/31 deadline.

He did pitch well against the Phillies in his next start. Your genius manager pulled him after about 77 pitches, and the arson squad you call a bullpen then blew the game. He needs a *lot* of counseling but I'd be reluctant to get rid of him unless I were getting a couple of really good prospects in exchange -- and I've noticed that in these mid-season deals, the team giving up the major league player usually doesn't get much in the way of prospects in return.

I wouldnt be surprised if BVW and the front office made the call to take Vargas out after 77 pitches. He couldve gone into the 8th at the least. Of course the Wilps would lose to spite themselves.

By the way, our (the Phillies) genius manager made the same mistake tonight, and a 6-3 Philly lead turned into a 9-6 loss to the Marlins. (It was the Phillies' fifth straight loss to the Marlins!) I know the modern strategy is to pull the starter early, but the bullpen can't come through every night.

What happened with Matz now?

Looks like the rookie did well... and the bullpen blows # 21.

And I guess BVW is going to give an extension to Cano for going 2-4, 5 LOB tonight.

Two crazy stats from postgame show:
  • Mets' bullpen has only converted five of their last 20 save situations.
  • Bullpen has given up runs in 18 of their last 20 appearances.

Actually cano wouldn’t. Several things to take into account with the Cano trade. No other team was willing to take on the massive contract unless the Mariners covered 75% of it. BVW came on and took it nearly at whole. Just ridiculous. The mariners were complaining and he gave them a $100 million gift
Second it’s obvious BVW was more familiar with cano and didn’t look st him realistically. Amateur mistake. It’s funny because an agent tries to get his player overpaid. In this case BVW did a good job. While a gm tries the opposite. BVW had to know cano was overpaid. He negotiated the contract. So the signing of him makes even less sense from him being a gm now.
Bottom line the Cano trade will go down as the worst in Mets history and maybe recent baseball history.
On an additional point. What has BVW done well?Every move he has made has had negative value. He has only hurt the team through his transactions.
He should be shown the door ASAP and a real gm should be hired.
You can’t have a team where the 3 biggest contracts were BVW guys. It’s a huge conflict of interest that is hurting the team.

While I’m on a role I think the Mets fire Callaway on Monday. He prob would have been gone after the Thursday debacle that finished this team off but you didn’t want to overshadow the 50th celebration. Look for an announcement Monday.

And the Mets aren’t cursed. It’s just terrible moves.
Hiring an agent as your GM who then signs his own overpaid players and makes the manager bat him 3rd all year to protect him isn’t being cursed. It’s just s mismanaged club.

The weird stat on Cano will be the amazing number of doubles he will hit this year but the funny thing is that they are all down the left field line because his bat is so slow.

Besides that being a horrible mistake, those two players could still outplay many on this team. At least they try.

Regarding the game. Once it rained I knew they would pull Matz. We can’t hold a lead for an inning. Did anyone really think we had a chance to win even if scored runs?

Keep hoping to wake up to a “ Mickey is Fired” article. And yes I get he is not the only problem, but for now BVW isn’t going any where. The Wilpons? Yeah not happening

We're not even at the All Star break, and the Mets have already used 26 pitchers. That's two complete staffs!

Mcneil and Alonso make the team. All Stars that is.
Very deserving. Glad they both made it and I wish more young players would approach hitting the way McNeil does. Some of his swings remind me of Boggs and Mattingly.

DeGrom makes it as well.

Congrats to them! Note that the Phillies have only one player, Realmutto, on the team. I was really impressed by McNeil and Alonso during the Mets series with the Phillies, and so I'm glad they made it. (DeGrom didn't pitch in the series, I believe).
