If you gave them your credit card then it’s not unauthorized.
November 1st was the renewal date. You checked the box when you signed up.
Yeah wait I think I signed up for the annual one. Aren’t I supposed to get a subscription to the Athletic? How do I get that now?
OP expected Ben to show up at his house with one of those credit card impression things from the prior century.
They send emails alerting you to the renewal with the option to cancel before the renewal date triggers the withdrawal.

You literally agreed to a year subscription starting on November 1st when you signed up for the site unless you canceled before. There was no way to get access without it.
I canceled my $1 subscription before today and then got an email for 50% off renewal this morning.

Whoah. I was a little surprised too when I saw the charge this morning. But it's not their fault. I knew, or should have known, it was coming after I signed up. The date was clear. I'd say On3 made a good chunk of change last night, good on them. Nothing nefarious, it was fully disclosed.

Hmm, that is unusual. If you didn’t intend to renew, I’d dispute with their customer service. I’m sure they would refund if asked.
