from an outsiders perspective. I really don't know what you guys expect? This is exactly what Cal has built. He has built this whole program on the OAD rule. He has said himself that he is not here to win championships, so why would the kids be any different? You can't preach to them about getting their one year in and then heading to the NBA and use that as your only recruiting tool and then expect the kids to care about winning a championship. Why would they? You have already pretty much told them while recruiting them that it does not matter. Getting to the NBA is what matters which means you have to get yours. If you take bad shots, who cares as long as you get your numbers. I know a lot of UK fans think Duke and Coach K do it the same way as UK and Cal but that is simply not true. Similarities...yes. The same...NO. K doesn't preach come to Duke for a one year stay and go pro. He preaches come to Duke to be a student athlete, win a championship and if you are ready, you will go pro after one year but no promises. That is the big difference and the fact some of the kids he selects has to be the type of kid to accept that. Think what you want but there are some kids that UK recruits that Coach K won't touch. Not that they are bad kids but he knows they will not accept any other role than being the alpha dog OAD player. Coach K also recruits some really good players in every class that have no chance of being OAD( Allen, Matt Jones, Cook, Vrank, Jeter, kennard, etc). This gives him an upperclassman base on every team even if they are not the stars. I am not trying to pile on or say Duke is so much better but you just can't get mad because you are getting exactly what Cal created.
