I'd love if they weren't truly the best we have. I feel like I've watched both of them make so many inexplicably bad plays over the last...5+ years? Certainly at the very least Gunnar was better than they were...would be kind of shocked if either started and was any better than Bryce

Yeaaah, Singleton had like...2 good games last year? Otherwise forgettable kind of? And Hartzog...potentially the biggest liability on this defense INCLUDING the D-line. He's just not tall enough or fast enough, so expecting next to nothing there. This is where I'm at. I feel like Gunner is better than both already. If the Bama transfer isn't better than them I'd be shocked. Seriously they were highly rated but other than a game neither has shown anything that would make me excited if they trotted out as a starter this year. I know we once thought highly of both of them but I'd be more disappointed than happy if either starts another game here.
I also MIGHT be the only guy on this board who isn't high on a secondary that includes Older Buford, Hartzog, and Singleton also. A little more intrigued by how I THINK they use Singleton this year but I swear I'm not excited about "running it back" with any of these guys minus Wright.

Yeah also true. I also agree that…we probably know what Singleton Buford and Hartzog are. Scheme will be the thing that makes them look good or bad, because they’re not incredible, and confusing blitzes will confuse QBs and make our DBs job a LOT easier…can’t wait to just find out and for the season to startSecondary looks a lot better when you have a pass rush. Let’s hope our front 4 can get pressure

We will be fine on the offensive line. There is talent there. And depth
You are not wrong. -- CriskerIs anyone really expecting anything from Teddy P and Corcoran? After so many injuries when I hear their names bring up I just think how can you ever count on them? Am I wrong?

And this is what we fear, every year.As with every year we're about to find out in a few short weeks. Oh and Go BIG RED!
Wouldn't pressure would be the best friend of a secondary that isn't great at covering receivers? It is a whole lot easier to cover for 4 seconds than 7. That being written, Gifford was a liability last year. Singleton and Hartzon will be sort of splitting the Gifford role this year. Singleton will be moving into the box and supporting the run more than last year. He has more speed and is a better tackler than Gifford. Hartzog will be playing the pass coverage in the nickel. There are 2 decent cover corners in Ceyair Wright and Andrew Marshall, then plenty of young depth back there as well.I think they will be able to pressure. I'm not so sure they hold up in the secondary. Especially considering Butler seems to be really aggressive. Someone has to cover if that's the case.

It’s been a bummer for both of those guys. Turner was pressed into playing early at a position that was not his natural one. Then he spent the back half of his career injured mostly. Teddy has never had a healthy season that I remember. He has two seasons left with the injuries. It’d be nice if he could have a full season where he was available to play in all of the games. Let him be able to go through an entire season of practice and see if there’s anything left there. Where he could be valuable is at the end of line in a jumbo package. That’s a lot of human to move if you’re trying to stop the offense from getting a couple of feet.Is anyone really expecting anything from Teddy P and Corcoran? I heard Teddy is gonna start at right tackle. Left tackle- Gunnar is playing very well, but there's a lot of money invested in the Alabama kid. If there's a tie, who do you go with? The returning starter or the big money transfer? One thing is that Pritchett can play either side so there's some flexibility there. Is anyone really expecting anything from Teddy P and Corcoran? Singleton is better near the line of scrimmage in my opinion. They have thrown so many scholarships at the defensive backfield that I would hope that they don't need to play a guy like a Singleton or Gifford back at safety in a single high look. Hartzog, I guess, is gonna be the slot corner. I'm sure he'll be crafty on the shallow routes, but every OC on our schedule is gonna be looking for ways to expose his size and speed on the deep stuff. And if Hartzog is playing up on the line of scrimmage, I can't remember how good of a tackler he is. These days smart teams are gonna scheme to make your slot corner tackle.I also MIGHT be the only guy on this board who isn't high on a secondary that includes Older Buford, Hartzog, and Singleton also. With the speed we've got at LB, it would be wise to blitz a lot more than we have previously.Secondary looks a lot better when you have a pass rush. Let’s hope our front 4 can get pressure
Fans acting like it is two totally different games. And I’m already loving the excuses for Coach Raiola about Pritchett.
He has to get used to a pro-style offense compared to a spread offense?
JFC!!

Personally, I am not worried about the back end.
If Teddy and/or Corcoran are playing, then that is a problem.
IMO there are only two things to like about the secondary:
1) Ceyair Wright
2) the coaching they will all receive…Nebraska certainly spent some resources toward making this group better
I think we’ll get more pressure this year because we have a more aggressive DC. We’ll get burned too but I’m all for a more aggressive game plan.If you watched Singelton, Hartzog and Buford cover for the last 3 years and are not worried about them covering I'm not sure what to say.
Of course pressure helps a ton. What makes you think we will get more pressure this year? TY, Williams, Butler, all gone. Love the new guys but they still have to "do it" right?
Outside of Wright who did you feel comfortable with covering man to man last year?
Holla
Ceyair Wright and Hartzog have played about the same number of games. Wright has 3 ints and 11 pass deflects. Hartzog has 7 and 12. Hartzog played as a freshman over older and better regraded talent. When Busch desperately needed a second corner, out of all of the DBs, it was Hartzog and the transfer from UCF. He is certainly limited as a cornerback, but I’m not gonna slag a kid for doing his level best at a position that he’s not exactly suited for. He will be playing a position that is a better fit this season and I hope he knocks it out of the park.If you watched Singelton, Hartzog and Buford cover for the last 3 years and are not worried about them covering I'm not sure what to say.

I agree about being more aggressive but the "getting burnt" more is the risk that cones with that.
I'm one who will always lean to being more aggressive on defense but we better be ready to deal with the consequences when it happens. Anyone remember the Indiana game when out guys were left out to cover in space? Illinois?
Long story short we BETTER get home when we send more people if we are starting who It assumes like we are in the secondary.

Not once did I mention singleton or Buford and their cover skills. Hartzog will be on the slot. I don’t care about last year and who could cover man to man.If you watched Singelton, Hartzog and Buford cover for the last 3 years and are not worried about them covering I'm not sure what to say.

Hartzog has been playing above guys who on paper are better players since he got here. He was the kid playing corner as a freshman when Tommi couldn't get his **** together and was wondering around between offense and defense. The kids limitations are self-evident. He's listed at 5-9/185 and that is probably generous. Hartzog ain't in the same ballpark as Ceyair Wright, except when it comes to productivity on the field. And that is the thing that coaches value. Busch, White, and Rhule have all been effusive in their praise. And I did know that the B1G coaches picked Hartzog as Honorable Mention last year.I love All our players. That doesn't mean some aren't better than others. Hartzog isn't in the same ball park as Wright and I don't need stats to tell me that. Level best only matters when you don't have anyone better. Production over good story.

Every year college football teams replace productive players with other players that have little to no experience.
You saw Buford playing corner, and Gifford playing the rover, Of course the man to man coverages were going to look suspect. When Ceyair came in, that side of the field got better in coverage. Then you add Andrew Marshall, who by all accounts is going to start at the other side. So my point was, I don't care about last year because you are going to have 2 guys starting at CB this fall that weren't starting at the beginning of last year. You will have Buford, back at safety and you will not have Gifford back there at all, and even if his cover skills aren't up to your expectations, they are still better than Gifford's were. That's all fine and dandy.i guess I'm concerned with what I seen last year and the year before that. 3 years is a pretty good sample size.Im not worried about Singelton playing the run. Buford is decent at that as well. I repeatedly mentioned COVERAGE in all my posts. So if we aren't talking about coverage then we are responding to the wrong posts.

I haven't heard anything about Corcoran. Don't think he's practicing yet. Who knows, maybe he'll get cleared to practice and give the line a boost in the latter half of the season.

For me, Hartzog is production AND good story.
