So which coach, on the offensive side of the ball, moves on after the season?

I can think of three positions that really under performed this season. I would think some changes are in the offing.

Only one I can see is Mario V. I think we should get a QB Coach/OC that can call the plays and develop QB's. Let Frost manage the other stuff.

Harry Potter can give Austin a ride to the airport on their way out of town.

I thought you were saying the coaches were "offensive". Was not going to argue that point. If that was the case, there are many coaches that fit that meaning...

Austin and Verduzco are obvious. Haven't been impressed with the TE's coach since he's been here. Allen has improved somewhat, but Volkolek is below average. Very inconsistent blocker and worthless in the passing game. I don't even think Lubbick deserves another year. No excuse for not even having your room ready to play for much of the year.

Frost has a few options. He needs a new Oline coach. He could go all in on the Oregon experiment, keep Lubbick and bring in Helfrich as Co-OC and qb coach. Or he could bring in a guy with P5 OC experience in other systems and try to adapt his system to the Big 10. Or he could go minimalist and just replace whoever leaves with unknown up and comers.

Since we like to discuss old washed up coaches around here, two coaches I wouldn't mind seeing back in a coaching role are Ron Brown and Barney Cotton.

I wont hold Vokolek's production in the passing game against him. We kinda have trouble at the other end of the throw and catch equation.

We need new OC (no more bank tellers), new QB coach, new WR coach, and new OL coach. In addition, Frost needs to give up play calling.

I feel like we should stop poaching PAC12 guys, and look to up and coming coaches at high octane programs who are doing what we aspire to do, against fierce competition. Namely poach Ohio State, Indiana, maybe PSU, LSU, AUburn

I wanna be able to make a case for Austin that isn't just recruiting but I can't as of right now. He's signing some really good dudes along that line and nobody is going to argue he inherited a dominant OL.

But something has to change in the way he and Scott are doing things. The blocking isn't good enough and the playcalling isn't good enough. They're not committing to the RB run game and they need to do that so the big dogs up front can learn to hunt.

I don't think Austin has been good enough, but I also don't think Scott is setting him up to succeed by continually dialing up throws for QBs who can't f***ing throw.

Austin is being judged on the run game for a team with a qb that can’t hit open players outside hashes or downfield and with 175lb rb. Good luck to a new guy to have success under those circumstances

He’s also being judged on the frequent whiffs on run and pass plays

He looks completely lost in the passing game. His blocking isn't much better. He's a below average player, to put it nicely.

He's been here 3 years and the line hasn't improved one bit. Our OL is slow, they get no push, and can't protect the qb.

He can recruit some dudes, I'll give him that. But what does it matter if he can't even take a serviceable line and have them blocking well?

In theory this sounds great, but no one from those schools are gonna make a lateral move to Nebraska. Unless you mean an OLine coach from one of those schools promoted to OC at Nebraska or something...

Verduzco and Austin should be worried. Both positions have regressed.

Not happy with Held either. He’s a good recruiter and very likeable guy but our running backs have been atrocious. They arrive to campus injured and they stay that way. Plus there’s no elite speed from that group. We can’t establish a great running game we’ll continue to be a bottom feeder.

This won't be popular but I hope all our coaches stay. I want some continuity. So ask me in 2 years.

Here’s what my letter to Santa would wish for......
1. A happy retirement for Mario.
2. Besides current duties have Ryan Held add run game coordinator.
3. In addition to OC and WR, give Lubick the TE room.
4. Have Austin keep the OL, his sole function to develop a solid 2 deep at each spot. He knows what the Pipeline requires right?
5. Hire Chad Morris, previous HC at SMU and Arkansas, OC at Clemson and recently OC at Auburn, as Co-OC and passing game coordinator. He also would give us crazy connections to state of Texas high school talent.
6. HCSF, QB coach.
Easy peasy.

This year counts like a 1/2 year to me, so they have had 2.5 years. I am not sure that's enough time especially in the trenches. I am willing to give it 2 more years.

continuity is only good with coaches that have been proven the ability to develop a player.

This. We’re making the same mistakes since day 1. If we’re getting talent, if we’re having good practices then what’s lacking? Everything points to coaching. An Illinois and Minnesota a$$ pounding at home is a huge red alert that something is off (and it ain’t talent).

This is the one I was fishing for. Running back room is seems very weak.

you guys know UCF was Austin's first paid coaching gig.. he was like some sports director for Disneyworld or something when Scott hired him.

Lubick was working at a bank..

There are probably more of these....

but why would he not actually hire an experienced staff?

man if it was my *** on the line, I would be hiring the very best guys I could get at those positions.

That's a good point on the repeated mistakes. Also I hate when our players don't wrap up on tackles and lower their heads which puts them at risk for targeting.

One thing I wouldn't mind is if Frost gave up play calling to Lubick. That way he could concentrate more on game&time management.

Austin is a good coach he has done a heckva job with young lineman, TE coach is a great recruiter, maybe the cigar smoking QB guru needs a new gig, our rb's are non existant takes some time though, we are pretty young.

What happens with Beckton? Frost wasn’t a good thrower, not sure I’d want him teaching mechanics to guys who can’t throw.

We had 9 missed tackles against Minny. They had 1, and they are supposedly the worst defense in the B10.

Our running backs are non-existent. I don’t see any flashes either like I did with Helu, Ameer, Rex, etc.

Mills - We don’t feed him, he’s always injured.
Scott - A bruiser with no breakthrough speed
Thompkins - Will always be injured
Johnson - Not a difference maker in anything
Morrison - Another one injured

Is it asking too much to recruit a healthy back that has great speed and strength to withstand a D-1 tackle?

Offer them twice as much pay, give them a made-up title and see what happens.

I agree with this. We are sorely lacking the type of running back who can make a difference. Maybe Morrison is that type of back, but we don't know yet.
